How Green Becomes Wood

"I thought you, at least, would be excited about it Alec," Daizi mused.

"Do not worry," Dark replied with the subtlest smirk, "I do not believe anyone is in danger of 'outshining' either of us. Although full-black tuxedos are off limits."

"You can pick a colour within reason," Dark replied, "We are requesting the colours worn befit the theme and so we would request no vibrant colours or sequins for this event. But we do not expect men to exclusively wear black."

"It seemed a bit unfair women have choice of colours and men don't," Daizi explained, "And even Cooger is wearing a tux for it."

"What is reasonable color?" Alec asked suspiciously.

"Is a tie required?" Xander asked, equally suspicious.

"What color is Cooger wearing?"

"What color is Ba wearing?"

"What if it had just a few sequins?"

"What if it was a bowtie?"

Dark stood, "I will get our planning binder so you can see the colour scheme we have decided on. And I believe Cooger is wearing brown, when last we spoke."

"Would you prefer a bowtie?" Daizi asked Xander in surprise, "I think traditionally tuxedos are meant to be worn with a bowtie, so that's not really a concern. But I think you'd be hard pressed to convince your father to agree to sequins."

"Save sequins for prom night," Dark called back as he headed upstairs for the binder.

"Brown?" Alec squeaked, instantly thinking of "stuffy achedimia professor" brown.

Xander shrugged at the question. "I don't know. Both feel like an extra collar, so might as well pick the one less likely to get caught in something when it dangles."

"What if I don't want to go to prom?" Alec demanded. "And if I did, what if my date also hates sequins because they reflect her face in weird distortions that make her feel weirded out?"

Xander frowned at Alec. "Awfully specific."

"You are not going to be forced to wear brown, don't worry," Daizi tried to soothe as she also tried not to laugh.

"If you do not go to prom, that is your decision and not mine," Dark replied, reentering the room with the binder and flipping it to the pages with colour and fabric samples saved, handing it to the twins. The binder itself was prodigious, with tabs indicating venues, flowers, cakes, caterers, even paper types. The colours primarily included blues, greens, purples, and reds, all in a dark, moody hue, "You do not need to stick only to these, but these are what we decided on for our colour scheme. If you deviate into vibrant colours, it will stick out."

"They're the same as our wedding, except this time we get to also use black," Daizi explained, pretending like she knew anything about it.

"Okay, that's not terrible," Alec said grudgingly. "They look very nice together. How many colors am I allowed to wear at the same time?"

Xander frowned at the color palette and gingerly flipped through the fabric swatches. "Does purple look bad with red hair?"

"I am glad it is not terrible," Dark said sarcastically, tensing as he saw Ivy grab at the pages. "No, purple looks lovely with red hair, actually. Yellow and purple are complimentary, so purple and orange or red also look nice together. The shade matters, but it matters with everything. And I had not stopped to consider how many," he sighed softly, "What matters most is cohesion. When I take you to try on suits, we can see what works best."

"Red is also acceptable," Xander said, pulling the binder farther away from Ivy.

Alec leaned over to grab a toy and then presented it to Ivy to distract her. "Alright. Trying on suits should be fun! Especially if I get to pick something other than black."

"You are more than welcome to pick something other than black," Dark promised, relaxing as Ivy gladly took her toy, "And in fact you are disallowed to pick exclusively black. We can go tomorrow after school, if you like."

"I would like!" Alec said cheerfully.

Xander bit back a sigh and nodded. "Yeah, that sounds good," he said, fighting his desire to complain. This was important to them. He could suffer through one suit fitting for them.

"Or I can drop you off in the morning, if that is easier," Dark replied easily. "I just thought it would be nice to do something as the three of us, even if it is primarily to purchase a suit."

"And I can have one last day with my aunts before most of them leave," Daizi added, mostly assure the twins she wouldn't feel left out before they had time to express the concern.

"That would be nicer than the bus," Xander admitted.

Alec smiled and reached out one hand to squeeze Dark's arm. "A day out would be fantastic! And in preparation for your big, big day!" He released Dark to squeeze Daizi's arm to show he was including her in that statement.

"I will drive you, then," Dark said with a nod, recollecting his binder, "Think about where you may like to eat, okay?"

"I think my dress should be ready to pick up this week," Daizi said, squeezing Alec's hand back.

"We should do something different than we normally do, foodwise," Alec commented. "I'm not sure what."

"I think suits are enough new for one day. Why can't we go somewhere standard?" Xander sighed.

"Because it's not every day you get to go suit shopping, and I think it should be special!" Alec argued.

"I do not mind where we eat," Dark said, really just glad to get to have the time with them, "but I trust you will find something which will not be too torturous to wear."

"I'm excited to hear all about what you decide on," Daizi grinned brightly.

The twins talked a little more about where they were going to go, what colors were appropriate to wear, and things like that before they got ready for bed and finished up last-minute homework projects and got ready for school the next day.

The next day, it felt strange to ride with Dark again. They hadn't done that in months, and it was fun to revisit old times. School was bland and normal as was usual. Alec did manage to sneak some time with Emma while Xander was distracted, and they enjoyed talking with wach other for a while.

After school, they waited for Dark to pick them up, Xander in his usual black jeans, black shirt, and leather jacket, and Alec in a rainbow shirt, green pants, and a pink windbreaker with a band logo on the back.
