How Green Becomes Wood

Dark had just been about to playfully grab Daizi's behind---something she had often confirmed to him that she was okay with and enjoyed---when the twins entered the room. In response, he quickly tried to play it cool to disguise his devious intentions.

Wonderful! Daizi texted back, You can come by after work tomorrow, if that works for you. I don't have work again until Wednesday, so I am available all day

Alec gave Dark an odd look, catching that he was acting a bit odd, but he didn't know what was actually happening. Xander didn't even notice as he sat down.

What can I bring? If you tell me "nothing" I'll come up with something random. ;)

Since he was playing it cool so well, Dark just went and set the tea cups near Daizi and let her know where be put them.

If you're adamant, I guess a nice snack would be lovely, Daizi replied, and the text was sent with an extra, unintentional, I set the tea cups to your left. Thank you, Goose because it caught their side conversation and she didn't realize.

I'm sure we will, Daizi sent back, unaware of what had happened and feeling a bit confused, I can't wait to have you over! Then after setting her phone down and feeling the number of cups she turned and asked, "How many people am I making tea for this evening?"

"One!" Alec reported.

"Two," Xander said.

"Three," Alec said, trying to sound like Dark. He got the accent right, but there was no way he could reach that level of bass.

"Four," Xander continued, also trying to mimic Dark. He was a little better, but not by much.

"Almost, but not quite," Alec mused. "I can't get down that low."

"Neither can I," Xander agreed.

"Your accent's good, though," Alec commented. "For the depth... Maybe it's the beard."

Xander threw a small piece of bread at him.

"It's because he's so tall, he has longer vocal cords," Daizi said, as though she were not a tall woman who did not have an especially deep voice compared to other women. The actual science didn't matter to her, she was too busy swooning over her big, strong husband with his powerful forearms, slow heartbeat, and what she could only presume were absolutely massive lungs. It sounded like she wanted to vivisect him to think of him in that way, but she guessed (incorrectly) that they related to how deep his voice was, and she just loved the sound of him breathing when she had her head against his chest. And at other times.

"I do not know if that is how it works," Dark replied, quietly pleased to catch sight of his wife privately fawning as she poured the tea into the four cups. She was so cute. Then he looked to his sons and said, "It is for the best your voices are not as low as mine. Puberty was horrendous."

"Right," Xander said dryly to Daizi's assumption of how the cords worked. "And I don't even want to know what puberty was like for you, Ba. Please."

Alec giggled. "Xander just doesn't want to know how fast it was until you grew your first beard."

"That's not it at all!" Xander protested. "Shut up and drink your tea. Mama was nice enough to make it for you."

"He's not touchy about it at all," Alec smirked.

"I think I was sixteen," Dark answered, taking a sip of his tea while standing next to his wife, "but it was not until later it was as full as I can grow it to now. Really I only mentioned it because my voice cracks were atrocious which is, at least as far as I have heard from either of you, something you both had easy in comparison. So there is a small victory."

Daizi chuckled into her tea, "I didn't hear them at their worse, but it's amazing hearing your voice jump three octaves while you tried to flirt with me didn't dissuade me at all."

"Would you like to know about how physically painful it was to grow to be my height?" Dark asked, faintly smirking into his tea cup.

"With the exception of that," Daizi nodded, giving earned respect to her husband's literal growing pains, "All three of you had it easier than me, and it's not even close."

"Yes, Mama, you did, Mama," the twins said in instant agreement, hoping she would not go into any further detail.

"We should be heading for bed soon, I think," Xander remarked. "Big day tomorrow. Like usual."

"Yes, I did," Daizi grinned, choosing to believe they genuinely meant it and weren't just appeasing her. Between her experiences and her husband's though, she had concerns for Ivy's future.

"What is tomorrow?" Dark asked.

Dark and Daizi both wished them good night and then laughed quietly at the circumstances for a little while as they finished their tea. While they cleaned up the cups together, they reminisced about their high school experience together, and then went upstairs to get ready for bed. After they did all their usual skin, dental, and hair care, they crawled into their bed together. As soon as they were both under the blankets, Daizi wiggled into his arms and he gladly held her close. She had talked about her day at length, by then, but now that it was just the two of them in the comfort of their big bed, she was honest about all the moments that were emotionally difficult or fulfilling. Like usual, the conversation didn't stay there. Dark spoke about his day, and about what it was like parenting Ivy during it. They talked about what they hoped for her future, they talked about Alec and Xander, they talked about Cooger and Lex, and about Enkidu and Kiki. They talked about music, gardening, and woodworking. They talked until they were up a little bit too late, and Daizi was slightly slurring her words as she fought to stay awake, her ear against his chest, exhausted and ready to sleep but wanting just five more minutes with him that evening. It really seemed, despite the stress of the day, there were only good things on the horizon, and that only frightened Dark a little. Still, he slept well, with the arms of his favourite person wrapped delicately around him.

Late at night, Alec tiptoed down to Xander's room with Kiki sleepily staggering after him until he picked her up and carried her. She wanted to be with him! She also very much wanted to be asleep. Alec let himself into Xander's room where Xander lay stretched out on the bed. He sat down on the edge of the bed and gently poked Xander.

"Hmm?" Xander mumbled. He'd only been dozing for a few minutes, so he woke quickly.

"I feel guilty," Alec admitted.

"Okay. 'Bout what?" Xander mumbled.

Alec sighed and laid down next to Xander. Kiki made himself comfortable on his chest. "I feel jealous of a baby. And disappointed for something that we have no control over. And sad."

Xander shifted over and put an arm around Alec without opening his eyes. "Explain?"

"I was just thinking... Mama and Baba were so extremely excited to see Ivy. Neither of them want to spend much time away from her. They are so eager to see her and hold her and reassure her that everything is okay. That's never happened with us. Not with Mama and Baba, and not from Mum. They seem to enjoy spending time with us, and I think they'd miss us if they didn't see us for a day or two or more, but I don't think they've ever run to see us like they do Ivy. They aren't desperate to see us after a day at school. Just interested and happy. We're too old for that. But when we were babies... I don't think Mum was that excited to see us. I can't remember her ever being that excited. Not like Mama and Baba. She had good reason not to be, and sometimes I think she was genuinely happy to see us and be with us, and she loved us, but I doubt she ever acted like Mama for Ivy. I mean, she didn't get a full year off to spend time with us, she had to go to work pretty fast just to survive, so maybe she just didn't have the energy to miss us like that."

"I dunno. I can't remember anything from before we were three, so maybe she did," Xander mumbled drowsily.

"Maybe she did," Alec agreed. "Maybe I just don't remember."

"She liked cuddling on her days off. Remember that?"

Alec thought for a minute and found a smile. "Yeah. She did. We'd snuggle up in bed and watch cartoons sometimes. That was nice. Maybe she did miss us, she was just too tired. Still..."

"Maybe someday you'll get married to someone who'll miss you like those two miss each other," Xander said, patting his head.

"Maybe so," Alec agreed. He nestled into Xander with Kiki on his chest and went to sleep.
