How Green Becomes Wood

"Alright, so, if you had pockets like mine," Xander stuck his hands in both pockets and wiggled them for demonstration, "you wouldn't need the space of your purse?"

"You have a soft, pretty, delicate side, but I would agree that it's not your main attribute," Alec nodded. "If you wanted to display that side for a night, that's a good dress to do it in, but if you aren't sure, then we can try another."

"Probably not," Claire said, looking into her bag, "I really just have a lip gloss, my phone, and my wallet in here. My wallet is kind of big, but I could downsize it, there's just no need since I can't put it in my pocket anyway."

"I don't think it's the one," Sloan admitted, after Claire gave her more praise for the dress, and she went to change again. The light blue dress had a similar problem to the green, where it looked nice on her but didn't suit her personality, and the dark blue one was a little too small, so they were all rejected too. "I'm not sure I'm into tulle."

Xander frowned and wandered off while Sloan tried on the dresses. He seemed to be looking for something.

Alec held up his next choice, a long, flowy dress that looked like an abstract watercolor in oranges, reds, and blues. This one only had one shoulder strap, and it was reminiscent of a Grecian toga. "I'm not sure if this is tulle, and it might be a little too light and delicate, but I love the colors." He held up the second one. This one was an olive green, loose, flowy dress without a lot of form other than an empire waistline, but it had flapping sleeves. "I think you'll hate this one, but it brings to mind warrioress during her downtime to me. And here's the last dress. Do this one last, okay? But don't look at it until you try it on!"

Sloan looked at the floaty, light coloured dress and eyed Alec speculatively, wondering how he picked these dresses. But, when she came out wearing it, she turned slightly and said, "I shouldn't have doubted, I like this more than I thought I would."

"It looks really really pretty on you," Claire praised, walking slightly around her friend to see more angles, "Your back looks great in it."

"I don't know if it's for prom, but if I had a wedding to go to, I'd get it," Sloan admitted.

"See? Wedding and prom, one and the same," Xander said, walking back toward them with something over his arm. "Looks nice, though. Off-one-shoulder looks cool."

"Maybe a summer wedding is a better choice," Alec agreed.

Xander disappeared into one of the other dressing rooms.

"I do really like the one-shoulder look," Sloan said, turning to look in the mirror again and flexed, "I look so strong."

"What is your brother doing?" Claire asked curiously, "Surely he's not buying himself a prom dress."

"It's true! One-shoulder really suits you, but I'm really struggling to find one-shoulder options," Alec sighed sadly. To Claire, he said, "I have no idea. I don't know what he's doing."

A moment later, Xander answered their question by opening the door and stepping out in a pair of women's blue jeans. He checked himself out in the mirror critically while Alec wheezed, caught between shock and laughter.

"Huh. They do more things for the butt than men's jeans usually do," Xander admitted, making Alec wheeze even harder and gently grip Claire's arm.

Claire also immediately fell into wheezing, and just like when they were at the park, after Alec gripped her arm, she leaned her weight against him, her soft hair brushing against his skin. "How are the pockets?" She squeaked.

Sloan pressed her lips together to try to keep from laughing and said, "I think you'd look better in boot cut jeans, but those aren't bad."

Xander grunted but did not otherwise acknowledge Sloan's comment. He stepped back into the changing room to grab his things and held them up for the girls to see. "Okay. Keys, wallet, phone, and small pocket knife. Let's see how bad it really is." He started trying to put his phone in the pocket. "First off, why is it so tight? These are too big on me to give room for things girls don't have, and it's still tight!"

Alec held Claire a little tighter as a few snickers escaped. Despite the hilarity of the situation, he was not immune to the fact that she felt very good against him. In another place, another time, he might have tried putting an arm around her.

Xander got the phone in... sort of. "The hell?" he demanded, trying to push the phone in deeper, but it wouldn't go any farther than halfway. He shuffled things into one hand and tried the other pocket. "Okay, this is crazy. What are you supposed to care in here? Lipstick? And maybe a credit card? What's even the point of these?"

"But you don't understand, Xander," Sloan said, a few giggles sneaking out despite her attempts to prevent it, "Giving us tiny pockets means we get a thinner silhouette, and isn't that more important than being able to fit our keys in our pocket?"

Xander scowled as he managed to shove in his pocketknife in one pocket and his wallet in the other. "Thinner silhouette? The second you put anything in here, you look like you've got some kind of weird deformity!" He waved his hands at the weird lumps in his pants now. "At least when guys have mystery lumps in our pants, you can usually guess what that's about."

"Xander!" Alec gasped, appalled.

"Hey, it's true." Xander pulled out his pocketknife and put it in the back pocket. It took him a bit of wiggling to get the wallet out, and once he finally did, he tried it in the back pocket. He turned to show them. "And now my nice ass lines are ruined."

"The weird lumps are why they don't give us pockets!" Claire wheezed, wiping her eyes carefully.

"This is why I always wear big pants," Sloan said, folding her arms, "I'd buy men's pants and hem them, but men's clothing aren't prepared for the size of my hips."

"And dresses don't have pockets at all? That's just lame," Xander said, prying his items out of the pockets. "Why is it there's like nothing in between 'I wanna show off how hot I am,' and 'Frumpy comfortable?' Can't you look at least fine and be comfortable at the same time?"

"Nope. It is impossible," Alec said, finally releasing Claire's arm. "If you want to be comfortable, then, obviously, you don't care about Fashion!" He made an arch with both hands like Fashion was a rainbow. "You haven't even seen the price difference between men's and women's jeans. It's worse than haircut prices."

Xander pointed between Alec and Claire. "You and you. Design better women's clothes because this is highway robbery."

"Hey now," Sloan said, scowling playfully at Xander, "My big pants aren't frumpy at all."

"Unless you ask your mom," Claire said rapidly before hurrying away to avoid Sloan's wrath.

"Claire and I probably could make an awesome fashion house," Sloan muttered, slinking back into the dressing room to try another one on. The empire waist dress she didn't like at all, and then she stepped out in Alec's final pick and simply asked, "Alec, what is this?"

Xander grumbled and went in to change back into his regular pants. He came out at the same time as Sloan and raised his brows at her. "That's a pretty slinky dress."

Alec managed a nervous smile. "A slinky dress with elements of a 1920's flapper dress?"

"You look awesome. You also look mildly concerned about your life choices and what time period your time travel crew dropped you off in," Xander said flatly.

"But... it fits you so nicely... and pretty beads..." Alec said weakly.

"I am so glad you ask," Xander said with a smirk. "I have three. Here's your first two. This is two pieces. No, don't look at them, just try them on. Yellow one first. It's a one-shoulder number." He handed over a black shirt, a black skirt overlaid with a mesh of purple to blue flowers, and a heap of yellow that was either a skirt, or half of a craft store.
