How Green Becomes Wood

Alec looked at him in surprise and then shook his head with a smile. "There's no way I'd get multiple invitations. What about you, Xander? What will you do if one or two or three people ask you?"

"Tell them no thanks," Xander said promptly.

"These days, prom invitations are so elaborate. I do not recall if I ever actually asked Daizi to go with me, or if we just mutually agreed we would go to prom 'ironically'." Dark said, thinking back, "I believe Cooger just asked his date in the hallway."

"Definitely not," Dark replied, "If you do anything elaborate, you have to make sure it suits the person you are asking. I would not plan anything until you know the person you would like to ask even would enjoy something elaborate."

"That's a good point. I wouldn't want anything elaborate, either," Alec agreed.

Xander started to comment about sparkles and sequins and decided not to. "I'm going to head downstairs," he said, pushing himself to his feet. "Laters."

"When it starts getting to the time you would need to ask someone, that is more than enough time to plan," Dark assured Alec, "I am going to start dinner. Do you have time to watch Ivy or would you prefer I take her?"

Ivy squeaked up at him and climbed out of her father's lap to go sit with him instead, while Dark slipped to the kitchen to get started on dinner.

Not long before it was ready, Daizi came home from work, which immediately turned Alec into little more than chopped liver as Ivy abandoned him in favour of their mother.

"Hello, habibti," Daizi cooed, scooping up her baby and kissing her cheek, "How was your day? Did you have a lot of fun? And what about you, Alec, how was your day?"

"I am going to build a trebuchet," Dark called from the kitchen.

Daizi paused for a moment or two, then said, "I always knew it would come to this, one day."

"Because I know your father," Daizi chuckled, "And I know how ideas get root in his brain. Of course he'd decide to build siege equipment."

"She even knows the term," Dark sighed, delighted by his wife.

"I am more surprised he is only building the one."

"It needs to stay with one, we don't have the storage space for more than one trebuchet," Daizi laughed, "And today was fine, not much really happened. We did decide it's time for me to start being in the office five days a week again, and I'm ready for it, but I don't know if she is."

Alec chuckled. "I doubt she'll ever be ready because she doesn't know what she needs to be ready for," he pointed out with a grin. "We'll all adjust, and she'll just be that much happier to see you!"

"Oh, Ivy-Qadira," Daizi sighed gently, smoothing her baby's hair, "What are we going to do with you?"

"Whatever it is, we will be accused of spoiling her," Dark said, finally able to step away from the kitchen to kiss his wife hello... Or try to, because very quickly, Ivy grumbled and pushed him away.

"No, Baba," She grumbled, her tiny hand staying on his face.

"Ivy-Qadira," Dark told her firmly as he gently removed her hand from his face, "Baba is allowed to kiss Mama."

"No!"

"Yes," Daizi said, "Mama and Baba like kisses just as much as Ivy does."

"Better spoiled than ignored or worse!" Alec said cheerfully. "And you can be spoiled without being rotten, I think."

Xander came up from downstairs and looked around. "Oh, hey, Mama. Are you being fought over again?"
