How Green Becomes Wood

The twins just laughed and went to pet another tortoise. This one stretched out its neck, and when they cautiously started rubbing it, it stretched it out even further, clearly enjoying the attention. They took turns rubbing its shell and scratching its neck, being very, very careful.

"Hey, Ba," Xander called, "for my pet, can I get a dog-sized tortoise?"

Xander chuckled. "Yeah, it might be cool, but I doubt Ba would go for that. Nah, I'll live without." He found what seemed like a good spot for the tortoise and gave it a good rub. It was a nice creature.

"Thanks, Mama. I bet you could totally handle that, but I don't know anything about turtles."

"Or tortoises," Alec put in.

Xander paused. "Is there a difference?"

"I think so, yes," Alec nodded.

"Definitely gotta do some learning before I even consider getting either one of them."

"The time is the same regardless," Dark pointed out, "So we all can."

"I think your father meant there is time for all of us to get one last piece of lettuce and feed it, not that there's time for only one of us to feed the final leaf," Daizi clarified.

"Oh! I totally misunderstood that," Alec said while Xander nodded in agreement.

They got their lettuce leaves and picked out a tortoise to feed it too. All of them seemed more than happy to take their leaves, and they wouldn't be hurried about it. Xander quite enjoyed watching the tortoise feed. It would be nice to have a pet, and a turtle/tortoise might be rather fun.
