"No, it doesn't feel good," Xander said bluntly. "At least, it shouldn't." He shook his head. "Anyway, the rest of the family is fine. Having Zeinab around is a lot of fun. I've been learning how to cook some cool stuff from her."

Xander considered this. "If you want to go, maybe you should talk to your mum and maybe your grands about a real plan. You gotta finish out your school year here, and then you could leave maybe first week of summer break or something. That'd give you time to settle in before starting school...

That didn't answer why she hadn't chosen a place close to where Milo already was rather than pick a place far away, force him to move again, and start a new school yet again. If she'd chosen a place where Milo already was, then it wouldn't have mattered nearly as much that his grandparents...

"Sure," Xander agreed, picking up another picture with great care and looking at it. "What's up?"

"Well, if you're still around here in a year, you can have the chance to do a two-year-old's birthday party, and if life goes like you hope, maybe some pictures of your own kid's party," Xander said. "You'd invite me, right? Even if I couldn't make it?"

"Way cool," Xander assured him. "It was awesome of you to do this."

"Nah," Xander said, shaking his head. "I know she sometimes wishes she could see certain things, but she's pretty resilient when it comes to things like that."

"It looks really good," Xander said. He glanced at Milo and read his expression. "She'll be glad you caught this."

"Now that's art," Xander admitted, looking at it. "My dad is going to go bonkers in a good way over it. You caught like the perfect moment right there."
