How Green Becomes Wood

"Me?" Xander nearly choked. "No. No thank you. I don't really care for the idea of someone touching my face and needing to be in my personal space to see what they're doing."

"Suit yourself," Daizi shrugged easily with no intention to force him as she picked up her cane.

"The problem with face painting is it is so expensive for something so temporary," Dark said, nonetheless bringing his family that way.

"But the joy it brings is priceless!" Alec said cheerfully, picking up the pot and the second large item, trying and failing to be inconspicuous. "Plus, we're supporting local artists. Maybe even students supporting themselves while getting a higher education. So, if you think of it that way, you're helping to pay for education!"

"Some things we picked up while out shopping," Alec told her. "Xander found something really, really cool that I didn't know was a thing."

"A caligraphy set," Xander said, picking up where Alec left off. "The pens are reeds. It's cool."

"Oh," Dark replied, intrigued, "That is a very traditional style. I try it on occasion, but it can be so finicky."

"Everyone says your handwriting looks like calligraphy anyway," Daizi pointed out.

"Maybe someday I'll do it," Alec said. "Or maybe I'll take up face painting! That would be fun. Where is the face painter?"

"Don't you dare try to go ahead," Xander warned him.

"I will make sure that we do," Dark promised, leaning them the rest of the way to the face painter. In addition to all the usual face painting designs, they had a few which were related to the festival. They couldn't do actual country flags, since so many of them are detailed, but there were a few stencils in cheerful Arabic words.

Xander found a nice spot to sit out of the way with the shopping goods and watched while Alec bit his knuckles and agonized over what to pick. He explained the different choices to Daizi and asked her opinion for him and her. Ivy, he suggested get a bird or a flower.

"A flower or a bird would be nice for her," Dark agreed, "but I think she is old enough to pick her own."

"I think I'd just get something simple for myself, I don't want to spend ages in the chair for something I can't even appreciate," Daizi said regarding her own options.

Xander nodded. "That's the way to go."

"I approve," Alec agreed. "Xander, are you sure?"

"Very," Xander said flatly.

Alec shrugged. "Alright. I'll get a black unicorn for you."

"Cool," Xander agreed, genuinely happy about that.

Taking Ivy out of her stroller, Dark held Ivy up to the board, "Okay, Tifla, what do you like? It's going to be painted onto your face, look," He pointed so Ivy would see the current person having their face done, "Do you want that?"

Hearing Ivy's hesitation, Daizi said, "Maybe we should have ours done first, so she sees and understands."
