How Green Becomes Wood

"Hello Kitty, and her friends," Claire replied, only smiling sweetly at Alec when he gushed over the bear. He was so cute, and so disarming. Most guys tried so hard to be tough around her, it was so nice to be around one who could just be himself, "My favourites are Cinnamon Roll, My Melody, and Tuxedo Sam. I basically grew up on Hello Kitty, Care Bears, and Strawberry Shortcake... That's probably why I like fruit scents, actually!"

Alec felt his shoulders relaxing a little. She didn't mind. Not one bit. In fact, it seemed like maybe she... liked it? He wasn't positive, and he didn't want to push his luck, but he appreciated and would remember this moment how she hadn't reacted badly to something that Emma would have. Politely, of course. "That makes a lot of sense. I actually don't know anything about Hello Kitty. I know the image of the Kitty, herself - himself? Itself? - but nothing beyond that. Hey, I found Barkleigh the Dog, and a truly bearish bear!" He showed her the dog, giving it a slight shake to make the long ears wiggle, but that ended up looking vaguely disturbing since it wasn't stuffed. He quickly put it back and pointed to the pictures of Barkleigh and the Grizzly Bear.

"Herself, but don't look too far into it. Sanrio says she's not a cat, she's a little girl who looks like a cat and is five apples tall and weighs three apples. And she's from London, I think? It's weird, but I still love her," Claire replied, laughing at Barkleigh before gasping, "This one!" She cried, spotting something utterly adorable. Lifting the blue husk, she said, "She's perfect!"

"Three apples tall," Alec mused, wondering what kind of apples and thinking that was such a charming way to describe someone or something. He jumped a little at Claire's exclamation and turned to see. "What is it?" he asked excitedly.

"The blueberry hooves are the best!" Alec grinned. He glanced at the dog and shook his head before putting it back. "As cute as it is, no, I don't think so. There are so many cute ones! Like a glow-in-the-dark bug, a batty kitty, and a happy hugs bear!" He pointed them out to her. "The bug is on the bottom of the list, but it is unique and cute."

"I was kind of hoping for a beaver or a bison, but bears and bugs are pretty awesome, too," Alec admitted. He frowned as he looked over the group. Then his eyes brightened. "Look at this Polar Bear Express Bear! I didn't care much for the movie, I'm afraid, but this bear is so cute!"

"Christmas is an amazing time!" Alec grinned. He set aside the Polar Express bear to look at the bear Clair picked up. "Wow, that one is adorable! I agree, that star is perfect. I would pick that one over the Polar Express bear. Sorry, Polar Express."

"That's true! That's Beary brilliant," Alec said with a wink. He turned the bear over, feeling it in his hands. "It's so soft, too." Another bear caught his eye, and he picked it up. "Oh my! Look at this one!" He held up a multi-colored striped bear. "Oh, the places you will go! Now there's a good story and an excellent writer."

Alec smiled bashfully as he looked at it. "It is pretty colorful, and it is very sweet." He held up the wishes bear and the Dr. Suess bear side by side, debating. Claire's opinion held a lot of weight, though, so it did not take him long to decide. He gently set the wishes bear aside and held up the Dr. Suess bear. "This bear is about to go to a new place! Maybe not a lot of new places since I don't travel that much, but at least one new place!"

"A scent," Alec said almost instantly. "I think if I put a sound in, I'll just be sad when it eventually dies. That, or I'll set it off in the middle of the night and terrify myself. My aunt gave my sister a teddy bear that's supposed to be like a learning thing, and it is absolutely terrifying. What about you?"
