"...You didn't grow up with dogs," Daizi said, "How old were you when you ate dog food?"

Both adults slowly turned their heads towards Xander, and Dark asked the obvious question first, "Have you tried dog food?"

"I think she's just really good at copying others," Daizi chuckled. "I have seen her try to eat dog food," Dark said, crouching beside them.

Reaching over, Daizi helped Ivy hold the lettuce safely, and while holding Ivy's hand the tortoise came and took a slow, determined bite out of it. It was still something that made Daizi want to flinch, but she held steady so Ivy wouldn't be scared... and unlike her mother, Ivy just laughed at...

Dark took Ivy's hand, and guided her around the side of the tortoise. Once Ivy saw her mother, she shrieked in delight and broke away from Dark to fall against her mom, giving her the biggest hug she could. "Did you miss me so much, Hummingbird?" Daizi asked, hugging her back, "How about you...

Looking away from the tortoise, Ivy noticed her mother wasn't nearby anymore, so she stood up and try and see her. When she couldn't immediately, she called out, "Mama?" "I'm here, habibti," Daizi said, swiveling to try to make herself more visible, but ultimately staying firmly blocked behind...

"My guess is it helps protect them against predators," Daizi suggested, "I'm not sure what predators, though."

"Oh wow," Daizi murmured, feeling the shell, "This is so different from the other one! It's not at all like I was expecting it would be."

"I am choosing to ignore your obvious sarcasm," Dark said dryly, remembering a month or so ago when he threw Tristan's father to the floor. More than anything, he felt like a warrior in a garden and he was going to take full advanta andge of peacetime. "My guess is the tortoises don't have a...

"That is very serious indeed," Daizi said, impressed, "Especially considering how intense people tell me his face is. Maybe he's gone soft." "I have not," Dark replied, as though he were not sitting in a baseball cap and helping his toddler pet a tortoise.

"Look at that one," Dark said, nodding towards one of the smaller tortoises who was rocking its shell back against the hand of someone who was rubbing it, "I think they love it." "The most serious look you've ever seen?" Daizi asked, "More serious than your father?"

"It is part of their spine," Dark said, helping Ivy to pet the shell, "They can feel all of it." "It's like feeding a dinosaur," Daizi said, still doing her best not to flinch. This was one of the largest animals she had ever been face-to-face with, and although she knew it was a slow...

"You close your eyes and try feeding it," Daizi said, doing her best not to shriek again as it came back to her. In her lap, Ivy was very confused on if she should be scared or not, because her Mama looked scared, but her Baba was calmly touching the shell. "Ivy, look, you can pet it. Like...

After Daizi was settled, Dark set Ivy with her and fetched the lettuce. As soon as Daizi was extending it outwards, one of the giant Aldabra tortoises came to eat it from her hand. As it took a slow, crunchy bite, Daizi couldn't help but shriek in surprise and flinch away. "Why are you...

"Here," Dark said, leading Daizi to an open space, "You can sit down here, or kneel. I think if you hold the lettuce out, they will come to you and then you can touch them without trying to seek them out."

"I think they just move very slowly," Dark said, looking down a long way at them, "I read once when Charles Darwin visited the Galapagos, he rode the tortoises there." "Goose, I need you to make sure I don't step on them," Daizi said a bit nervously. The zoo of course allowed her to keep her...

When Dark joined them again, he remarked about how he had a snake in his early 20s, a ball python named Rigor Mortis, but he had ended up rehoming her because he felt he wasn't able to give her the care he wanted to. With how long a properly cared for snake can live, he mused it's very possible...

Now that Ivy was awake again, she was once more making a valiant effort to keep up with her parents by walking, while her parents made a valiant effort to walk slowly enough for her to do so. The vast difference in stride lengths was a bit of a trouble. Once they made it inside of the...

"They really are not much," Dark said cautiously, "I just enjoy the exercise of it." "What is just up ahead?" Daizi asked as she exited the family restroom, carrying Ivy on her hip. "It is a surprise, you must trust us." Really, Dark wasn't sure how exciting a surprise it'd be, but it was...

"When we get home, if you would like," Dark replied, "There is not much time to do so when we are walking around. Once Daizi and Ivy are finished, we need to hurry to the tortoises so we are not too late to participate."
