It all went to shit when the nukes hit.

Cities burnt to cinders, riots, shortage of food and clean drinking water and toxic air killed billions of people in less than a decade. Whoever remained had to deal with a nuclear winter and the fallout. Not many people survived this apocalypse, less than hundred thousand did, and most of them grew up in or lived in bunkers.

BUNKER 57

This is your home below ground. It is a 3 mile stretch of underground made to be live-able, insulated and ventilated, located half a kilometer down from the surface of god only knows where. There's food and water in abundance, and the dwellers of Bunker 57 live a blissful life. Lately however, lights have been flickering, and the cause remains unknown. There is a service tunnel at the back of the bunker that leads all the way up to the service. Two individuals have been chosen to go to the surface and check out the cause of the disturbance they have been experiencing.

Personality: Amiable and friendly, but introverted. Nathan will happily help you move a couch up the stairs without advanced notice, but will never remember your birthday.

History: From a young age, Nathan was a tinkerer. By the time the other children in his cohort had grown to disdain the annual hand-me-down of toys and clothes, Nathan had instead begun to look forward to it. For the opportunities to make something new out of the parts that it represented. It was clear to his parents and other familial adults that the boy was gifted. He had a keen analytical mind and ability for abstract thought that year after year placed well above his peers. Natural gifts that would have culminated in greatness, had they come together with anything resembling some sort of innate discipline.

Instead, the vagaries of bunker life and a side dose of ever so slight neuro-divergence meant that while Nathan was able to readily navigate the intricacies of social life well enough, he was never quite able to really click with the system in the ways that meant meteoric advancement. All of the world's high placement scores in column A while being average in columns B and C equaled slightly above average overall. Qualified for an important and critical job, sure. A treasured drone, please mind your health. Which, truth be told and despite occasional grumblings otherwise, suited Nathan just fine.

He'd had a steady and predictable career for about 5 years, having risen to just where he was comfy after 2.5 years of tenure. Coasting there, comfortably. Bolt falls off Priority 1 machine. Replace with new, inspect fallen bolt. If meets standards as outlined in Section Sr4759QI of the Quality Inspection manual, install in Priority 2 machine. Rinse and repeat. Comfy.
