Ancient Forest (1X1)

The tribes people had just watched him. None attacked or tried to approach him. The chief however did move from the village and stepped to the demon. He stood by the demon. "You know the light is not something to be afraid of. You do not burn in it."

"I don't deserve it... I'll never belong with people like you, no matter how hard I try. Even if I kept trying, your people would probably just believe I was there to attack them at one point or another." His voice was somewhat soft, in his hope that he wouldn't offend anyone.

"You all are innocent, you actually try to protect people from us. You deserve that light, it's where you belong. I just belong in the shadows, like any good people-eating monster should realize." His voice choked a little bit as he referred to himself as a 'people-eating monster,' but he didn't seem to notice or care.

The chief gazed at the demon and sits down. He shakes his head and sits down. " No, my people and I we are not so innocent. We have killed outsiders before." He shrugs. Then he adds. "You have a chance of changing things. Our people used to live together. It only changed when your food source was destroyed. You deserve the sum just as much as anyone else. "

He went silent, not knowing what to say. He felt his stomach almost twist into knots, must be guilt. Then some sort of reasoning popped into his mind. "You probably only killed outsiders because you needed to defend your village. We just kill for our own selfish needs, because we think we need it to survive."

He found his voice choking up more as he continued. "I just wish I could be human like you all, so I wouldn't have to kill innocents for a stupid reason like that. They deserved their lives more than we do. They wouldn't have had to suffer like that if..." He trailed off as it was getting harder to hold back tears.

The chief scoffed. "We killed outsiders for very selfish reasons. To keep people away from us. " he shrugs. "You can't change what you are but fighting it will only make you more sorry for yourself. You need to accept what you are and also remember that you have a place in this world. Just as that girl and her bloodline have a place."

He bit his lip and brought his knees up to his chest, not knowing what to make of what the chief was telling him, or how to reply. That girl... he knew she wanted to help, and so, it seemed, did the chief. But how could you fix something that was broken to begin with?

He needed a way to calm himself, something that hopefully wouldn't involve having to feed. No matter how badly he felt about himself, he'd be useless if he let his emotions get the better of him.

The chief nods a bit. "Never be afraid of who or what you are. Fighting yourself only destroys yourself and makes you weaker. You need to be strong. There are those who count on you."

He stayed silent and seemed to calm down just a little. When he finally worked up the strength to speak, his voice came out soft. "I just want people to be able to trust me.. but that can't happen if they know I could kill them anytime I wanted. I don't know why I had to turn out this way.. but I want a way out."

The chief nods. "You realize if we didn't trust you we would have killed you long ago. Also that girl returned to you. She must trust you as well. You may want a way out but remember that sometimes accepting who and what we are solves more things than we realize. Use the girl's gifts, satisfy your hunger. You are welcome among my people any time." He says.

"I still don't understand why that girl returned. She had clearly seen what we can do to her, and she knows she'll die if we try to feed from her without that amulet. And yet she seems so set on helping us. I don't get it." He took a deep breath and let himself relax a little. "I appreciate your help, but right now I'm not sure what could be done to fix this, to fix me. I feel like I was broken to begin with, how do you fix something like that?"

The chief shrugs. "We do crazy things." He seemed to smile. "Perhaphs you weren't broken to begin with and simply need to get a new perspective of yourself. Sometimes when we look at ourselves one way for so long we forget that are other parts to us."

Again, he didn't know how to react. But he nodded, seeming to understand somewhat. Then he stood up, looking back towards the forest. "Maybe I should go... my brothers will probably start wondering where I went off to anyway."

The chief nods. "Any time you want to talk. You know where I am." He stands up and heads back to the village.

"Of course." He nodded back and started back through the forest towards the ruins. When he got back he spotted Sarah looking through the script on the ruins, and took a few steps towards her. "Are you looking for anything in particular?"

She blinks a bit and looks towards Red. "Not really. Just didn't know what else to do...so thought I would look for something...anything I suppose."

He smiled a little and approached her. "You know... I may not understand why you stay with us, or why you returned in the first place, but every once in a while I'll realize just how grateful I am for it. And I sincerely hope we don't start to take you or your abilities for granted, cause now I feel like we need you more than we realize.."

She gazed back at him and smiles softly. "I don't understand it either. I just know I'm needed here."

He gave her a genuine smile and started deeper into the woods, seeming more positive than he had been in the time Sarah had been with the demons.

She watches him go, smiling softly. She was glad he seemed to be in a better mood now. Glancing to her ankle she rubs at it a little. She needed to get off of it. She starts to make her way back towards the hut so she could sit down.

He was hiding by the hut to watch for her return, then once she was inside he quickly flew off towards the ruins across the river. Once he got there he started looking over them carefully. There had to be something he could do if he ever wanted to release her... just in case the guilt started pulling on him too strongly.
