So far I’ve got a loose idea for a character named Rook Sloane, a technical Earthbender who’s been enlisted in the militia of the Ba Sing Se. He’s kind of a reluctant Lawful Good type but he’s lost a lot of hope: knowing his father and grandfather served before him gives him an appreciation for how much damage the war has done in the absence of the Avatar. /he personally does not believe the Avatar will ever come, that he’s just a legend. Rook’s only idea for ending the war and saving the world is if somehow everyone being forced to fight laid down their arms all at once and refused to fight.

That’s pretty much all I’ve got as of right now. Thoughts? Opinions? Critiques?

It seems like a solid start (though his name is quite jarring when compared to the other Avatar characters in the show). We don't currently have an active soldier character will make him a unique addition to the cast. I guess I have a few questions that might help get the ball rolling!

1. What role do you see him playing in the story? Will he defect to Team Avatar? Stay a cog in the military? Become an adversary?

2. Does he believe in the war or remember what it was about? I know you say that he thinks the only way to end it is for everyone to reach an armistice, but in terms of his personal feelings, does he feel like the Earth Kingdom is justified in what they are doing/fighting for?

I won't ask about personality or anything like that since it's just a baseline but I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
 
I definitely foresee him beginning to help Team Avatar in secret while still trying to serve his people and make a difference by prioritizing relief funds and care for refugee and the citizens of Ba Sing Se and when he gets red taped and finds his superiors don’t care about the people he will gradually shift to Team Avatar and begin using his intel to aid those who are resisting, also on Team Avatar, or who are effected by the war.
As for your second question, these are things I’ll have to explore and expand on. I know he believes he can do good and that others have done good by serving in the war, but he feels unfulfilled and road blocked by other obligations.
Thanks for giving me such good questions! I’ve got some more character development to do now. :)
(Edit) Oh also, I don’t think Rook is too far fetched of a name if we consider the names King Boomy and Jett. I love the names Zolan and Mei, btw, I think their meeting in the woods with the accidental burning will be super heart felt.

Thank you, I appreciate it! :3 I also like the name Rook, while agreeing that it isn’t to far fetched since of the King Boomy and Jett names we heard.
 
Yeah, Rook isn't too far fetched of a name. I think it would fit in well. And thank you- I like Rook as a name, it's a cool one. Everyone's names for their characters are great.

Quick little update: I’ve got Rook’s family and some good concrete background information about his childhood and family dynamics.
I’ve also got 3 paragraphs of a biography drafted right now (although I’m only halfway through his biography) and I’ve got his skills ironed out! I can’t wait to share it with you guys!
Once I’ve got the draft finished I’d like to field the group with some world building questions (if everyone is willing) that have occurred to me while I was writing Rook’s bio. Specifically, I've got questions about 1) Sandbending and 2) the military procedures, rankings, training and educations requirements, etc. in relation to Ba Sing Se and the Earth Kingdom as a nation.

I think sandbending is great. What do you want to do with it? Will there be a special police unit for sandbending?

What if the military have access to technology that is inaccessible to the general public? Should there be a big wealth gap now 500 years into the future?
Is Ba Sing Se in general more wealthy than many of the smaller city, towns, villages in the kingdom and even the inhabitants has access to better technology while the poorer side of the country is still doing most thing the old way?
 
I have some background story that came as an inspiration while I was working out Rook’s family tree! Rook has cousins on his mother’s side who still live in desert area and practice Sandbending in secret. I have a bit of a conspiracy about Rook’s grandfather and father leaving Rook with the heavy burden of finishing what they started in the war.
I’d love to gush over my ideas but I know it will be better to post my biography with ironed out details.
I really hope you guys like my ideas and that we can build on them and develop more plot points and world building places! I can’t wait to share!
Also I’m looking at some YouTube videos about the Earth Kingdom (the unsung burden of all writers is the research required haha) and I think I’ll post the links somewhere appropriate where you all can access them!
