Prologue:

You arrived at school like any other day. However, instead of being directed to your homeroom, the soldiers at the door guided you to the school auditorium. There, the rest of the students spoke about what was happening. Some said it was an assembly for third years only, that it was some special trip. Others let the forbidden words of "Battle Royale" slip. The auditorium was full of buzz and chatter in Mandarin and English depending on the group you listened to.

The principal and his translator stood up at the front podium. "If all first and second years could please go to their proper classrooms. You all still have class." He demanded politely but firmly. "Third years, please remain in your seats. Instructor Zheng will be here shortly." He cleared his throat and looked at a few of the students who seemed to be whispering. "There's been a lot of speculation, but I can assure you that everything will be cleared up soon. This trip is nothing to worry about." He assured the group of anxious Seniors. "God bless you and keep you."

A minute or so later, Instructor Zheng showed up in his tightly pressed dress uniform and with an M-16 slung across his back. He took his place at the front of the room. "Today, you all will be going on a trip for several days. Your parents have been notified, and all preparations have been made." He continued with his speech. "This is a trip funded by the Ministry of the Interior for the purpose of education. The decisions made on this trip may also impact the rest of your life. You are to obey every order given to you until we arrive." He looked up the crowd. "Are we clear?"

Following a confirmation, the man would nod. "Alright, please line up and follow me. The bus is waiting just outside."

The students would quickly be led outside by a group of soldiers into a waiting school bus. Soldiers would board the bus and call out names alphabetically from a list. "Sit where you want, just not in the very back." They said as your name was called.

[Blacksmith]

You arrived at school like any other day. However, instead of being directed to your homeroom, the soldiers at the door guided you to the school auditorium. There, the rest of the students spoke about what was happening. Some said it was an assembly for third years only, that it was some special trip. Others let the forbidden words of "Battle Royale" slip. The auditorium was full of buzz and chatter in Mandarin and English depending on the group you listened to.

God, she hated mornings.

Her nominal condition was bad enough, the sheer drag of getting up however all but killed her. Leaving her nice, warm bed for the latest Murder-Death-Kill (she refused to dignify it with its actual title) might actually do it however. Curse you puberty and all it did to this point. She never should have turned seventeen. Yes, she thought darkly as they marched into the auditorium and took their seats.

That was when it all went wrong.

She wondered what would happen if she just walked out with them. At a height of 4'9 and carrying a teddy bear, ragged and worn, she didn't look like a typical senior. She had bags under her eyes from her narcolepsy and her hair was only given a cursory brush. Jean shorts, hugging her small hips flowed into black stockings and combat boots. Over her upper figure, a form obscuring sweater hid herself from the world and drove off those who would show interest.

But it was not these that got folks attention when they saw her. Instead, they looked at her throat. A visible, gnarled scar showing where someone had messingly cut it.

By the time she had decided to just chance it, they were all gone.

Little bitches.

He cleared his throat and looked at a few of the students who seemed to be whispering. "There's been a lot of speculation, but I can assure you that everything will be cleared up soon. This trip is nothing to worry about." He assured the group of anxious Seniors. "God bless you and keep you."

"Oh yeah? Go fuck yourself, you broke-dick bī."

It was a single, discordant note given voice. It originated from a voice more machine then the student majority, but the venom within was pure human. It's speaker, a glaring Gothic hugging a teddy bear in one arm, as she pressed a special microphone to her scarred throat.

Yi-Xuán: Narcoleptic. Tiny. Has seen every Friday the 13th films. Even the bad ones.

Asher Falcon was used to coming to school and was starting to get used to being in this new school. It had taken some adjustment, but so did most aspects of his life. Living with BPD didn't make his life easier than he needed. He was certainly glad that he had slide his medicine with him early. He knew his father had said that he wouldn't need them, but he was always paranoid that he would need them and wouldn't have them. It was kind of funny that he was right though. He wasn't sure why their soldiers for this field trip, but he wasn't certain if he cared.

As he looked around the bus, he counted the seat and found the seventh seat. He watched and waited to see if anyone would pass by. He didn't mind scooting for a friend.... or a hot guy or girl.

A boy, also about aged 17 would get on the bus behind her. He sat down next to her in Seat 22 and offered a small smile. He was obviously another outcast, with a silver dyed streak in his hair and a faded Ramones shirt underneath his loosely buttoned dress uniform. Earbud cords ran from his jacket pocket and up to his ears. He took one out.

"What's up? I'm Fan Geng." He introduced himself. "I haven't seen you before. Thought you might need some company." He offered his hand to shake.

Xia Feng

Xia hadn't expected to come to school today only to be immediately herded into the auditorium. She wore a very cute and expensive new skirt and blouse set today, and didn't want to sit immediately in the dirty auditorium chairs. She waited around for a second until she finally sat down.

A surprise field trip, huh? Funded by the Interior Ministry? This seemed really suspicious. However, she didn't want to say anything that would cause a stir or jeopardize her future. She quietly remained at her seat with her hands in her lap until they were instructed to move.

When they were herded into the bus, she immediately headed for Seat 12. It was a window seat, right about equidistant from the bus door and the window emergency exit so she could easily escape if it came down to it. She brushed her seat off and sat right down, straightening her skirt and checking her phone.

A boy, also about aged 17 would get on the bus behind her. He sat down next to her in Seat 22 and offered a small smile. Jordan was freaking the fuck out.

As the young man stiff leggedly marched into the bus and say himself down in seat 3, he looked around at the people coming in and already on the bus before playing his head in a hand, exhaling. He was going to stab whoever had mentioned the Battle Royals, because now it was all the guy could think about. Well, that and how this trip is going to postpone his school assignment, which he really needed to get started on.

Averting his gaze away from a pair of cute girls as they entered the bus, mostly out of habit, the large european boy tried to sink into his chair and, somehow, be unnoticeable. It had yet to work unfortunately. Something about being a goddamn titan compared to everyone else in the school made it very hard to simply be left alone.

He figured it would be better if at least one of his friends were coming along, to help sooth his nerves, but they had all been placed in a seperate class and only met up at lunch really. Then again, if that colossal asshole was right and this did turn out to be a battle royal, which the fucking soldiers didn't help deny, then perhaps it was for the best that he didn't really know anyone in here.

Listening in on all the nearby conversations, both Mandarin and (rarely) English, he felt he should block his ears before he tried to jump out of the bus and was probably shot by the soldiers. Hearing people speculate did not help in the slightest. Really, all he could do was pray.

And find that guy who said Battle Royal so he could kick him in the shins.

The sound of shuffling feet grinding against the auditorium floor droned, accompanied by the buzz of conversation, filled Kaspar’s ears as he bled into the vast chamber. The boy, dressed in the standard navy blue blazer, white dress shirt, tan khakis, and dress shoes, found an empty seat set apart from the general crowd of students. With his chin tucked towards his chest his shifty eyes jerked from side to side, taking in his surroundings with a certain nervousness that was commonplace in his life. Yet, for once it was seemingly commonplace amidst the crowd of squabbling students who eyed the Principal expectantly.

Soon he was replaced by the Instructor, but Kaspar only saw the M-16 assault rifle slung over the man’s shoulder. Battle Royale. It had to be, why else would the military visit a high school unless they were being selected for the Battle. His left eye suddenly began to twitch, an involuntary motion that spread to his cheek until he finally just closed his eyes tight and waited for his anxiety to subside. Breathe... breathe... breathe, he repeated in his head over and over. He typically utilized the exercise to get through asthma attacks yet it came in handy during times of stress as well. Anything that came from the Instructor’s mouth passed through one ear and out the other until the mass of students arose from theirs chairs and began filing out of the auditorium.

Once outside they quickly boarded a bus and took their seats. While the others congregated close together Kaspar plopped himself down in seat 4 as to avoid the stuffy air of the back of the bus and focused his attention on the window to his right. There he sat with his hands shoved deep into his pockets trying to control the twitch in his left eye as he effectively shut himself off from the rest of the students.

She looked flatly at him in reply. Hand moving to her throat, she spoke.

"No one ever sees me. I prefer it that way, more or less. Don't think I've seen you either. What are you good at?"

He nodded. "Same. Gives me time to myself. I'm mostly good at just sliding by in my classes except for Music. Dad says I'm also good for standing behind a McDonald's counter my whole life." He joked. He pulled out a small, red cardboard box. "You like cinnamon gum?" He offered.

Jordan spared a glance at the guy next to him, somewhat relieved to see that he was at least close to approaching him in height. He actually somewhat recognised this guy too. Karl or Kaspar or something. Had never talked to him, the guy was apparently a bit weird. Let’s see if that’s true.

Sticking his hand out towards the fellow European, Jordan put on his best smile. “Hey, i’m Jordan. I... I think I need someone to talk to right now, you know? Come to terms? Because with those soldiers... a lot of us... well, I don’t think most of us will be coming back.” He speaks to the guy in English, glancing towards the soldiers as he does so, trying to swallow as his throat closed up in fear.

If this really was the Battle Royal, he would need both allies and an estimate of others. The game of trust would be he deadliest of them all, and he had to know who he could turn his back on, fast, or risk going into a Battle Royal without a single friend.

Kaspar turned slowly towards the voice, with a blank expression adorning his face, and recognized Jordan, a fellow European student here at Saint John Bosco Academy. Despite the fact that these two had never spoken before Kaspar made it a point to commit names and faces to memory, a task that wasn’t too challenging for someone with his kind of memory.

He hadn’t planned on making conversation with any of his classmates here and yet there was something genuine in Jordan’s voice that tempted Kaspar into responding. Perhaps it was the reality-check that was suddenly washing over the students as they prepared themselves for what could very well be their last hurrah in this world before they meet their untimely end in the Royale. On a more pragmatic note Kaspar was smart enough to realize he’d need allies if he had any hope of surviving and it wasn’t like he was winning any friendship awards any time soon. How could he reject a potential ally at such a crucial moment?

“Kaspar,” he replied, staring uncertainly at the boy’s outstretched hand before meeting it with his own, providing a surprisingly firm handshake. He offered an awkward smile that was only made worse by the distortion caused by a sudden twitch in his left eye forcing his entire head to shift slightly to the left. “Guess I’m nervous too,” he said, trying to laugh it off with an unconvincing chuckle. For a moment he let the silence hang out in the open before snatching it away just as quickly as it’d arrived. “You’re right, ya know. Some of us won’t make it back... but some of us might. And we don’t have to do it alone.”

Jordan swallowed. “Way to make me feel even more nervous man.” He says jokingly, before registering Kasper’s last statement. Uh, wow. Way to be straight forward. Although, he supposed it may just work.

Taking a look again at the guy, he supposed they may be able to work well together. He wasn’t the biggest, but he was smart. If he wasn’t a social cripple, as shown in such a blunt way of asking, Jordan supposed he may have been popular. He certainly wasn’t ugly.

Nodding slowly, Jordan kept the smile off of his face, wary of people catching on. “Yeah... that sounds good.” Of course, he wasn’t going to go out of his way to stick with his guy. If he slowed him down, Jordan would leave him to fend for himself. In a game of literal life and death, any sort of disadvantage could be fatal.

Then again, the usual brain and brains combo might work well. Except the brawn is a little brainy and the brain a little brawny. He was rambling.

“Although, maybe let me handle any talking.” He says jokingly, snapping back to attention.

“You-“ he paused to let his left eye twitch. “-read my mind.” At this point he was almost certain he’d prefer combat over conversation. Yet it was pleasing to have an ally, especially one so early considering no one had officially even said the words Battle Royale. He also made note of his awkward social behavior and decided to work on this so that he might collaborate well with his new ally.

Jordan appeared to be a strong ally with some obvious brawn and maybe even a little brain to direct that brawn. However, he was still just an ally and Kaspar would have to make sure he didn’t get too attached at this point. He’d have to be ready to let this man go if it ever came to that. He also have to keep in mind that if he was not able to prove his worth his “ally” could become his enemy on the dime; He’d have to be alert.

“So...” his voice trailed off before picking back up. “W-what’re you good at?”

Ah, there was that twitching he had heard about. Idly he wondered if it was more muscle spasms than anything conscious. Worrying, if it really was entirely involuntary. Probably not the best idea to give him any sort of gun. After Kaspwr had finished talking, Jordan was silent for a few seconds, judging his options, before speaking.

“Oh, you know. Mostly construction. I’d like to think i’m pretty strong too, mostly as a side effect of being an engineering student. Might be able to make like, a spear, or something if given the right resources. ” Jordan answers, mentioning only what Kasper probably knew already. As the great Riddler once said, there are two rules to success in life.

Rule one: Never reveal everything you know.

Useful, Kaspar thought. He wasn’t all that strong himself so it would be beneficial to have a heavy-hitter in his corner. The engineering background also seemed to prove him right about his initial perception of Jordan’s intellect.

He nodded slowly, mulling over the information he’d been given, despite the fact that Jordan didn’t seem all too willing to reveal much about himself. Smart. He didn’t want to sit and listen to a life story anyway. “Engineering,” he said aloud. “I’m a bio student. N-not too strong but I played soccer for awhile so I’m pretty f-fast.” Discussing himself was already causing extra anxiety which was evident in his stutter, becoming more prominent as he continued to speak. “And-d d-don’t let the t-twitch fool you. I’m a c-crackshot.”

Truly, back in Germany he’d gone hunting so frequently with his father that firearms were more like an extension of his body rather than a weapon. He didn’t bother Jordan with the details though. He also steered clear of mentioning his asthma as his twitch and stutter were certainly enough baggage for now. Regardless, he figured he might not have to mention it if he could just keep his breathing under control, which 8 years of soccer had aptly prepared him for.

Idly Jordan wondered if this kid was some sort of mind reader. Talk about spot on instincts as to what he had been thinking. Almost was enough to freak him out, if he didn’t currentlt have bigger problems.

Kasper being a crack shot was good info, he would need to keep that in mind, whether or not they ended up being allies. The biology part... well, not so useful but he supposed he might know a little bit more about medicine and poisons than your average hiker.

Taking the lull in conversation as a moment to look around, Jordan looks behind him into the rest of his class. He was sure he could overpower everyone here, even some of the shorter soldiers in terms of raw strength. But if he was going to win this he would need a weapon. He was under no illusions as to how crap a shot he was, so the only option to turn to was melee. Funny. He had never thought his geek side might save him here.

She eyed him for a minute, before letting out an inaudible huff.

"I'll pass, but thanks. So you're not worried about the soldiers?"

"More for me." He shrugged, popping a piece into his mouth. He looked back at the soldiers sitting directly behind them. "That'd be pretty cool. Maybe the zombie apocalypse occurred and we're some of the last survivors, and we have to do everything correctly in order to survive." He chuckled, looking around the bus.

"Anyway, you like horror films? What's your favorite?" He asked, leaning back in his seat.

Chen Shu-ling

Shu-ling had woken up a little earlier this morning, before the sun was even up. She had been exhausted from the night before, the week had been full, and crammies last night had run over. Part of her didn’t want to attend more school after normal school was over, but her parents had paid for it. With what little they had, they still made she that she was the best student that she could be and that she had all of the resources that were necessary. So she went to crammies, but it was exhausting.

But she still wanted to get up early. She usually did, to help her father with the usual food prep work. She use to do this more when she was younger and had more time. Now she only did so a few times a week. And her father discouraged her from doing so. He said that is distracted from her studies. But she knew even though he tried to keep her best interest in mind, he still loved having his daughter help and having her work by his side.

So she did just that. In fact, she almost lost track of time and just about missed her bus to school. But luck was on her side. Or so she thought.

However, when she got to her beautiful campus, she could tell something was amiss. She could feel that tensions were high. Soldiers on campus did not scare her, because they were meant to protect. Youth had gotten more and more rebellious. She had noticed the change from her family, who kept to the traditions of things, in comparison to the other children. Things had been getting quite out of hand.

But for the most part, this school had been pretty good. Shu-ling was confused by the presence of such authority.

Until she hear the whisperings from other students. The whisperings of Battle Royale.

Fear coursed through her body. She could barely listen to the principal’s address, or that of the general’s. She didn’t even react to Yi-Xuán’s outburst, though in any other circumstance, she would have let out a small gasp of shock. Her thoughts raced.

This can’t be. This is not supposed to happen. Her mother and father were terrified by the law that was passed 7 years ago. But they could not do anything about it. And they could not deny the results. The behavior in schools had been correcting themselves. By fear, of course, but that was the point. That was another reason why Father had chosen this school. It was a religious school, and though the government was not fond of religion, surely they would not subject a school to such horror when all they did was encourage morality, faith, and obedience.

Breathe, Shu-ling, your overreacting. They said this was a field trip.
Perhaps that is all this is. ​

Shu-ling robotically walked toward the bus, and plopped in seat 8. She focused little on her surroundings or classmates, still consumed by the small possibility such a terrible fate.

Those two for example seemed easy enough. Already actively speaking to one another, and from their postures it was easy to guess what their topic was.

Xia hadn't expected to come to school today only to be immediately herded into the auditorium. She wore a very cute and expensive new skirt and blouse set today, and didn't want to sit immediately in the dirty auditorium chairs. She waited around for a second until she finally sat down.

A surprise field trip, huh? Funded by the Interior Ministry? This seemed really suspicious. However, she didn't want to say anything that would cause a stir or jeopardize her future. She quietly remained at her seat with her hands in her lap until they were instructed to move.

When they were herded into the bus, she immediately headed for Seat 12. It was a window seat, right about equidistant from the bus door and the window emergency exit so she could easily escape if it came down to it. She brushed her seat off and sat right down, straightening her skirt and checking her phone.

Rich brat. Cannon fodder. She turned her glance elsewhere.

Shu-ling robotically walked toward the bus, and plopped in seat 8. She focused little on her surroundings or classmates, still consumed by the small possibility such a terrible fate.

She looked like how she felt, honestly.

And this was just the tip of the iceberg. So many in their class, friends and otherwise. All to take the chance of Battle Royale.

To the question, she brought her mic up and spoke in a harsh, synthesized croak.

"Well...I was always partial to Friday the 13th."

If this was going to be an actual thing, then perhaps she had a working model of which to do it already.

Kaspar appreciated the silence exhibited by Jordan and didn’t press the conversation any further, taking the time to reflect on his current circumstances rather than silently cursing the world for screwing him over in such a harsh stroke. This was going to happen whether it suited him or not and he wasn’t about to sit idly by and watch as his “fellow students” planned his death. Nothing in the past mattered, none of the joy, pain, laughter, and sorrow, none of those distant memories would comfort him with solace amidst this turmoil. Only tomorrow mattered, a distant sliver of orange on the horizon just out of reach but close enough that he could still see that it was real.
