The wolf had trailed Baron back to the warehouse, her steps growing more sluggish with every passing minute. As soon as they crossed the threshold, the weight of exhaustion finally won. The blood loss had taken its toll, dragging her under before she could fight it any longer. Sleep claimed her, her body surrendering to the only thing that could heal her now.
When she woke, Chloe was in control once more. The shift had wiped her memory clean, just as it always did. That much was familiar, at least. But what unsettled her was how violently the change had taken over—sudden, forceful, like something had snapped inside her rather than eased.
She sat up slowly, muscles aching as she took in her surroundings. Desmond was nowhere in sight. Baron had made himself scarce as well, leaving her with no one to question about what the hell had happened.
So, she did the only thing she could—kept moving.
She threw herself into whatever work needed doing, tending to the wounded, scrubbing away bloodstains, trying to make herself useful amid the wreckage. The warehouse had been hit hard. From what little she had pieced together, more of those things had been here, tearing through their defenses.
Yet, through it all, a deeper unease gnawed at her.
She couldn't feel her wolf. Not even a whisper.
