How Green Becomes Wood

"For his sake, I hope they have that kind," Cooger chuckled. He watched as Dark leaned forward to try to wipe a bit of the frosting off of his daughter's face.

"I think you're right," Daizi grinned.

"She will be on a sugar high now," Dark commented.

"It's a good thing she has so many new toys!"

Lex snickered as she watched them. "And the kind of food coloring that doesn't stain. That's always fun."

"And lots of people to keep her entertained and look out for her safety!" Alec said, waving his piece dramatically before popping it into his mouth.

"You can't say he doesn't love his daughter," Cooger snorted. "If you ever decide you're tired of living, push some cake into the man's face."

Ivy giggled, completely covered in frosting, happily eating the tiny slice of cake she had been given as if it was the most delicious treat in all the world.

"Do you know some people buy their baby a whole seperate cake for this?" Daizi asked, "It feels wasteful, even if it wouldn't send Dark to the hospital."

"This alone may send me to the hospital."

"Nah, I like eating cake too much to waste it like that," Lex chuckled. She eyed Cooger speculatively. "There are other faces I could see painting, though."

"How... interesting," Ciara said. She only had vague memories of her own and her siblings' birthday parties and had no idea of what children's birthday parties were supposed to be like.

"Don't you dare," Cooger said, holding up one finger, "Cause if you get frosting on my face, I'll have to get frosting on yours, and then we'll have to go to war, and we'll inevitably get frosting somewhere we shouldn't, and then Dark'll skin us both on his daughter's birthday."

Daizi chuckled, "I imagine it's for the spectacle. But I don't even think a baby should eat that much cake."

"At least her bib is protecting her clothes," Dark turned his head to the side, "Mostly."

"I'm glad you came, Ciara," Daizi smiled at her, "Did you enjoy the fish?"

"We'll save it for the next party then. You do have two nephews, after all, so there will be other chances," Lex smirked.

Ciara inclined her head. "The fish was the most delicious fish I believe I have ever tasted. Truly marvelous to behold."

"Or I'll wait until your birthday," Cooger winked.

Dark smiled slightly in satisfaction, "I am glad you think so. It is something I care deeply about making properly." He looked over at Ivy, who was finishing up the rest of her cake and rose to his feet, setting his plate aside, "Okay, tifla, let us go wash you off, hm?"

He scooped her up easily and she gurgled happily at him. Like she did every time he picked her up, she grabbed onto his beard tightly in her tiny hands. Her tiny. Bright blue. Frosting covered hands. Giggling, she pulled his face close and gave him one of her big kisses and happily cooed, "Ba-ba!"

And every last gear in Dark's brain ground to a halt as he stood with her frosting covered hands deep in his beard.

Lex smirked at him, her eyes sparkling. "I don't have cake at my birthday." Then she looked over in time to see what happened with Dark. "Uh-oh," she said, fighting a smile.

Alec gasped. "Baba! She said Baba!" He grabbed his mother's arm. "Mama, did you hear that? Ivy said Baba! And she smeered frosting all over his face and way into his beard, but more importantly, she said Baba!"

"Good timing, too, considering the frosting in the beard thing," Xander remarked.

Cooger nearly fell over laughing at the look on Dark's face, completely lacking Lex's attempt to at least try and hide his amusement. He didn't even acknowledge what his niece had said because he was doubled over before she said the word.

"I did hear!" Daizi grinned, both from amusement at the situation and out of delight for her husband. She remembered how it felt when Ivy said Mama for the first time, the fact Dark got to hear her call from him "and her painting him in frosting explains why he is so silent about it. Are you okay, Goose? Do you need help?"

Dark blinked, looking down at Ivy's bright face, trying to think of a single response while she still clung to his beard, but the emotional high of his baby daughter calling his name and the emotional low of his beard being so thoroughly gooped ground him to a complete halt.

Lex couldn't help herself. She tried to fight it, but as Cooger doubled over laughing, she lost control and started laughing as hard as he did.

Alec got up and went over to Dark, holding out his hands. "Here, Ba, let me take her to get her cleaned up. Then you can try to get some of that out of your beard!"

"It's a good color on him," Xander mused. "You need to go to a wedding that's blue now that you've been to a lavender one."

As he looked into Ivy's eyes, all at once Dark began to laugh a deep, rumbling, earnest laugh. It was such a rare sound from him many of the guests at the party had never heard it before and found themselves staring more from shock than amusing at the sight of this grim giant laughing so freely while absolutely covered in frosting. It didn't last long and as he gathered himself he pressed his forehead against the top of Ivy's head, since his forehead, at least, was clear of frosting and he knew if he kissed her it would only make the problem worse for them both. If the way Dark had kissed her hadn't thoroughly weakened her, the sound of his laughter did, and Daizi was left where she sat with a faint-but-visible blush on her cheeks, practically swooning over her husband's ultimate reaction to the most beautiful catastrophe.

"Oh Hummingbird," He murmured, a sound nearing a giggle but still not quite reaching a sufficient pitch to be called such escaping him, "Baba loves you so much. And you are very, very cruel."

"Baba!"

"I would hug you, if you were not so blue, I would," He told her, Chuckling softly before looking at Alec, his eyes still painted and delighted by what had happened, "No, I can clean her. If I handed her to you, you would only also end up covered in frosting."

"Alright," Alec agreed, stunned but pleased by the sound. It made his heart so very, very glad to hear it, tickling some part of him he hadn't really felt before. He smiled and stepped back. "Good luck not turning even more blue!"

Daizi could've just about died right there from how much Dark's reaction. She didn't even know who to turn to squeal about it with but one thing was for certain---she was going to make full use of that second allowed kiss as soon as she possibly could.

Milo, meanwhile, scurried quickly to Xander's side while Dark went up the stairs, "I think I got that," he said quickly, "I'm not sure, because I can't check, but I think I got that."

"Dude, if you got that, I will pay you with whatever you want," Xander told him seriously. "I know, the pictures in general are a birthday gift and whatever, but if you got that picture nice and framed, I will pay you. Money, food, driving you around, whatever."

"By that picture, do you mean the one where it looked like his brain blue-screened or the one where he was laughing?" Milo asked, looking down at his camera, "I think I probably got a good one of them both. I'll know for sure soon."

"Either one or both. If you got both, you can charge me for both," Xander told him. He gave Milo a nod of approval, deeply impressed. If he was a different person, he would have patted Milo's back or shoulder.

"I don't really know what I would want to charge, it doesn't really seem fair," He shrugged, rubbing the back of his neck, "If you want, you can come to the dark room, though, to see if I got it. Anyway, you should probably pick the frame, for a place like this."
