How Green Becomes Wood

"It is probably not worth discussing without them present and around people who do not know them both," Dark said cautiously. He had many opinions on the subject, but he knew he'd hate being discussed like this. Insulting Cooger's evil ex was one thing---discussing his current relationship felt very different.

"I am an Operations Manager at a bank," Matt answered, "It's not particularly exciting, but it pays the bills."

"I'm a Paralegal, although I'm only working part-time right now. My plan is to go back to full-time work once both Charlie and Avery are in full-time school," Sean told them.

"Yes, my friend Spencer," Daizi replied, "She's a Criminal Defense lawyer."

Sean exhaled, shaking his head, "Then she is much braver than I am. My boss sticks to Workers Comp and Property Law, primarily."

"Oh, that's nice," Alec said blankly. "A very important job to have." He thought about saying how his uncle, Tristan, worked in morgage lending. That sounded similar, but he wasn't sure it actually was.

After dinner, Sean cleared the table and left all of the dishes in the sink. Of course, Dark offered to clean up but was strongly told there was no need to. For a little while after, while Ivy, Avery, and Charlie were still awake, they continued to have slightly stilted conversations. Throughout it, Charlie continued to look at Daizi a lot, eventually shyly asking her to play, which of course Daizi agreed to.

As she sat on the floor with the little girl, Charlie asked, "Ms. Daizi, why do you wear sunnies? Papa told me it's rude to wear them inside."

"I wear them because I'm blind," Daizi answered.

"What?"

"I can't see."

"Yes you can!"

"Cause she's got a baby and looks," Charlie answered, confused, squinting at Daizi with her hands on her face. Her fathers sat horrified and scrambled over each other trying to figure out how best to apologize.

"Blind people can have babies," Daizi replied calmly, not particularly offended, "It's a bit tricky sometimes, but it's okay. What do you mean I look?"

"At people, you look when they talk!"

"That's because I can still hear them and I know it's polite. My family will tell you I don't always look in the right place and when I'm just with them, sometimes I don't at all." Daizi said patiently.

"Try covering your eyes with your hands," Xander suggested. "Then try to guess where someone is when they talk to you. When they talk, you try to face them, don't you? Even though you can't see them? That's what Mama does."

Charlie looked at him for a few moments and then did what he said. After only a few moments she dropped her hands, "WOAH!"

"I know, pretty cool right?" Daizi asked.

"Why does being blind make you wear sunnies?" Charlie then asked, curious in a different way, and before Daizi could answer she asked, "DO YOU NOT HAVE EYES!?"

On the couch, Matt and Sean looked at each other, "are we bad parents?"

"i really thought we raised her to be more empathetic than this."

Xander started outright cackling just like Daizi had earlier. He sat on the arm of the couch, wheezing slightly as he laughed hysterically.

Alec snickered, trying not to lose it like Xander. "What would you say if she didn't have eyes?"

"Why don't you have eyes?" Charlie asked.

"Charlie, Sweetpea," Sean said, "You can't... You can't ask that, baby."

Dark sat silent on the couch, holding Ivy in his lap, and his eyes glinted in amusement. Daizi sighed softly, trying to figure out if it was acceptable to lie or not. There were so many, many glorious lies she could tell.

Xander took a deep breath. "She has eyes," he told her, "but they don't work, like a toy without batteries, because she sold their use like how Ariel sold her voice to get something she wanted."

"Xander!" Alec scolded, the corners of his moth wobbling as he tried to decide if he could laugh or not.

"Our parents hold education in very high regard," Alec told Charlie gravely. "Very, very high regard."

"You don't want to know what our father did to earn his education," Xander smirked.
