How Green Becomes Wood

"I suppose so," Dark answered. "If you really think it is better we do not address it unless he asks about it, then we will not. It might help if we also plated Xander's for him, at least on nights when he is not cooking." Plating food for each other seemed like it would overcomplicate things and require switching up their entire mealtime routine.

"I am here only to guide," Dr. Hepburn told him. "I have only known your son for an hour. If you believe a different way would be better, than I would encourage you to do it that way rather than any way I might suggest."

"But you are trying," Dr. Hepburn pointed out. "You are doing your best for yourself, your son, and your family. I am here to help however I can, but don't discount your intuition as a parent. It is the most powerful tool you have. Even if it does not always seem quiet right."

"Very well. We shall end this session today, and I look forward to seeing Alec next week," Dr. Hepburn said, standing to walk them out.

Alec still sat in his chair, not having moved at all. He looked up now, hopeful for an escape.

She briefly reviewed her notes before looking at Dark. "Only not to give up hope. Having children act out, even very well-behaved ones, is not a direct indicator that you are a bad parent, only that they are facing things that they have not yet learned to deal with or have the words to express. Your outlook may be grim at the moment, but things like this usually turn around. You just need to give them some time. Some more than others, but a few respond surprisingly quickly. Even if something you are doing and have done is not the best choice, that is okay. Children are resilient, and they will understand that their parents are not perfect. It will be alright."

Dark watched her for a few moments, wondering if that was what she had always planned to say or not, but he accepted it for what it was, "Thank you. We will keep that in mind."

"Thank you for your help," Daizi said, extending her hand for another handshake, "I suppose we may meet again next week, if you would like both Ghalib and myself to return."

She accepted Daizi's handshake and walked them to the door. "If it is not too inconvenient, yes. It will not be something I expect after every meeting, of course, but in these initial visits, it will be good so that we might all be on the same page concerning how we are approaching these issues."

The secretary helped them pay and set up an appointment for the following week. He was quick and pleasant and had it done and set up in no time flat.

Alec stood waiting near the door and watched as a surly 20 year old came in. He scowled at Alec and went to flop in a chair. He looked as happy to be here as Alec had felt.

"Unless something really egregious happened, like she threatened or belittled you, it's better to attend sessions with the therapist a few times before seeing if they click or not," Daizi told him as she got into the car, leaning over to pop open Dark's side for him as he walked around to the driver's side, "She said she liked you, or at least she said she thinks she'll be able to help you."
