How Green Becomes Wood

"We'll let you, but we'll tease you for it," Daizi chuckled, "I love it back home. We've got a great swimming pool. Until your father and I got married they made us sleep in different rooms on opposite sides of the house."

"Gee, I wonder why," Alec said dryly and then snickered. "Having a swimming pool must be great! You must have been a fantastic swimmer." He paused, quieting a little. "But... what about your father?"

"We were already living together in the US," Daizi replied, "There was one trip we were sleeping in different bedrooms while I was already pregnant and pretending not to be."

Alec's questions made her smile fade and it took her a few minutes to respond, "I don't know. We can always stay with Khalaty Neha and her family, although it'd be more cramped. Or with my cousin Marwan. He says he can see the pyramids from his balcony, since he lives in a high rise. If not... It's a big house. Amty Zeinab still lives there. It was where she grew up, Saladin let her move back in when her husband died. She didn't want to live alone."

"It's not like he'd keep me out of my country," Daizi replied with a sigh, "I'm still a citizen there, after all. But it's all... I don't know. It's a while away, still. I'm desperate to go back, but we aren't desperate to try to occupy Ivy on that long of a flight. And your father hates flying."

"I've never been on a plane," Alec admitted. "You know, Mrs. Hollis says she loves Egypt. Wouldn't it be fun if we did like a joint family vacation? Have some stuff we do together, some we go separate ways, and we have fun in the sun."

"You'd probably fare well better than him, he's just too big. I'm a bit too big, but planes are not made for him. He always puts on compression socks and it's a whole mess," Daizi explained, turning back towards the house, "and he gets randomly selected at TSA a statistically significant amount. But a joint trip could be nice, some day. Although I'm not sure if you and Xander can have fun under that particular sun. It may catch you on fire."

"It is unlike anything you know," Daizi sighed, "I grew up in the largest desert in the world. Sometimes I tease Dark about that. Then he reminds me I had air conditioning and he didn't." She chuckled, "It's not perfect, the house was built decades ago, but it was built for good air flow before the advent of modern air conditioning."

"It's nice enough, it gets hotter than you can imagine in summer. That's why we usually go over winter or fall break." She shivered as she walked the path back to the home, "At least Enkidu loves the snow."

"Egypt has basenjis, grey hounds, whippets, salukis... The most common street dog is the Baladi." Daizi said, thinking about it, "We didn't have dogs growing up. Saladin hates dogs. We had a cat once. His name was Mishmish."

"It means 'apricot.' He was this little orange cat. People joke about orange cats being stupid, but he was a clever boy." Daizi smiled softly, one hand deep in her coat pocket, "He had a little bell on his collar, for me, but he knew I couldn't see him because he liked to trip others on the stairs, but never me."
