How Green Becomes Wood

"Maybe it feels more independent that way," Dark speculated but Daizi only shrugged and said nothing. She certainly had some habits which probably made her life more difficult, but there were some things she just needed to do for her, regardless of the cost.

The karaoke place was close enough to Tristan's home they they made it there fairly quickly. When they did, Dark held the door open for Tristan before following in after Daizi.

Tristan thanked Dark and cautiously made his way inside. It was a bit cramped, but he could make his way through. He made it to the proper room without incident, and he made himself comfortable in the corner where he took up the least amount of room.

Alec and Xander came in and chose a seat. Other than a table in the middle of the room with the controls to choose the songs, there wasn't much in the room, so Ivy could run around without much trouble.

As always, Dark helped Daizi to a please to sit. Then Ivy was set down and let loose, much to her delight because she very much wanted to explore.

"Do you do karaoke often?" Daizi asked Tristan.

"No, this is my first time," Tristan said, looking around curiosly. "No, wait, there was one time, but it wasn't like this, and it was back when I was a teenager."

"I'm sure you'll love it," Alec told him with a grin.

"A lot of people prefer the private rooms, that way you're only embarrassing yourself around people you know. I still enjoy the other type, though." Daizi said, listening to Ivy's bells jingle as she explored.

"I can see how that would have a strong draw, minimizing embarrassment," Tristan said, amused. He watched Ivy when she came in his view.

"Mama, I think you should go first," Alec said, handing the control to Dark so he could work it for Daizi.

"I thought it'd be nice to offer and let others go first, if they wanted," Alec grinned. "It'd be rude to assume. Uncle Tristan, would you like to go first? Since it's your first time."

"Oh, no!" Tristan chuckled. "Absolutely not!"

"Alright, if you give me a minute, I'll go first," Alec said. "Unless you want to go, Ba?" He was already thumbing through the tracks, expecting Dark's reply.

Dark didn't even respond verbally, he just gave Alec that look. He hadn't even decided yet if he was going to allow himself to be talked into singing at all yet.

"It's only fair the person who invites everyone to karaoke embarasses themselves first."

Alec giggled and kept looking. Finally, he spotted one that he liked - he had a handful of songs in his mind but wasn't certain what would be available - and keyed it in. He took the microphone and stood up, waiting as the peppy intro began. Then he began singing with gusto.

One day I don't wanna wake up
Wonderin', wonderin', where'd all the time go?
One day I don't wanna be stuck
With a page full of plans that I made no time for
It's been a minute
Yeah, we talk about life but I wanna live it
I wanna live it with you, hm-mm

Whatever, whatever you wanna do
Down for whatever as long as it's you
Nothing but time, we got nothing to lose
Down for whatever as long as it's you
When you're with me, nowhere I'd rather be, yeah-yeah
Whatever, whatever you wanna do
Down for whatever as long as I'm here with you
Ba-ba-dum, ba-ba-dum, ba-ba-dum, yeah-yeah

Yeah, uh, one day on a runway
With a couple one-ways, somewhere they can't find us
I know that we've been stressed out but we're set now
And I wanna put it all behind us
It's been a minute
Yeah, we talk about life but I wanna live it
So, give me a minute with you, with you

Whatever, whatever you wanna do
Down for whatever as long as it's you
Nothing but time, we got nothing to lose
Down for whatever as long as it's you
When you're with me, nowhere I'd rather be, yeah-yeah
Whatever, whatever you wanna do
Down for whatever as long as I'm here with you
Ba-ba-dum, ba-ba-dum, ba-ba-dum, yeah-yeah
Ba-ba-dum, ba-ba-dum, ba-ba-dum, yeah-yeah

(Ba-ba-dum, ba-ba-dum, ba-ba-dum, yeah-yeah)
Ye-yeah, yeah, it's been a minute
Yeah, we talk about life but I wanna live it
So, give me a minute with you, yeah
Don't wanna wake up wondering where the time went, yeah
Whatever, whatever you wanna do
Down for whatever as long as I'm here with you

When Alec finished singing, Dark and Daizi clapped for him. By then, they were very used to how he sang. Ivy, though, looked up confused, because she had never been around a microphone like that before, and didn't understand why Alec's voice sounded like that.

Alec bowed dramatically, grinning. "Thank you, thank you!"

"That was very good," Tristan said, surprised. He had not heard Alec sing much, and while he knew Alec loved singing, he hadn't realized how good Alec was. "Is this song dedicated to anyone?"

Alec looked a little blank at first before realizing what Tristan was asking. "Oh! No, I just really like how bright and happy it is, and the idea of not wasting time. Enjoying life!"

Tristan smiled and nodded. "Excellent viewpoint!"

Alec crouched down and grinned at Ivy. "Do you want to try?" he asked her, offering her the microphone. He kept a firm hold of it but would let her hold it.

Xander sighed but took the controls. "Yeah, all right," he agreed more grudgingly than he actually felt. "Let's see what they've got on file here."

Ivy didn't know what the microphone did, but she grabbed onto it and babbled a bit at Alec. Hearing her own voice fill the room made her eyes go wide. When she laughed, the lounded sound of it made her screech in delight, less pleasant when in a microphone, and laugh some more.

Alec endured one more laugh and then carefully thumbed the power off on the mic, trying to make certain Ivy didn't see what he was doing so she couldn't turn it back on.

Xander finally found a song he liked and held out his hand to Ivy. "All right, Mini. My turn! Can I have it, please?"

"You're such a good singer, habibti!" Daizi praised, holding out her arms, "You did such a good job!" Beside her, Dark clapped politely. Between the two of them, Ivy was easily distracted and returned happily to her parents.

Xander retrieved the microphone and turned it back on. The music started, and he bobbed his head along to a very familiar tune before he started singing along.

Boys and girls of every age
Wouldn't you like to see something strange?
Come with us and you will see
This, our town of Halloween

This is Halloween, this is Halloween
Pumpkins scream in the dead of night
This is Halloween, everybody make a scene
Trick or treat 'til the neighbors gonna die of fright
It's our town, everybody scream!
In this town of Halloween

Alec snickered, barely able to keep from singing along while Tristan hid a smile.

Daizi grinned when Xander began to sing the song, recognizing it from its first notes. She was certain she and Dark were being lightly teased, but it was a great song about their favourite holdiay. Who cared that it was January? It felt like Halloween was just yesterday!

Xander did his best to make the different voices of the different monsters, like, "I am the 'who' in the call 'who's there?'" and overall turned in a pretty decent performance. He allowed himself one bow and set the mic down on the table with a smirk.

"That was quite good," Tristan praised him, chuckling. "I do not know how I am going to follow those two acts." He looked at Dark and Daizi. "I could go next, if you don't have a song you'd like, yet? Or, if you do, please, do take the stage!"
