How Green Becomes Wood

"She is adorable, that is why I can cope with her obstinance." Dark replied, watching as Ivy began collecting some of her other toys and seeing which ones could fit through the tube.

"It's been alright. The interns are... being interns," Daizi said, furrowing her eyebrows for a second, "I have to keep reminding myself they're young. How was your day?"

"No, not really. We're in a lot of planning stages, so it's all very dry and tedious. A lot of meetings, a lot of emails... It's not quite all hands on deck, yet, but it's definitely... I don't know. It's in a stage which is important and necessary, but I've written and read so many proposals." Daizi sighed, running her hands through her hair and fluffing it out.

"That sounds really dull, alright," Xander said. He considered his next words for a moment before asking, "Do you and Ba want to go do something together for a while? Like, just for an hour or two?"

Xander snickered. "Yeah, like today. Come on. When was the last time you got to take a spontaneous trip out? A mini date? And when is going to be the next time an offer like this is going to come around?"

Daizi touched her hair again, it definitely wasn't the cleanest it had ever been, but she didn't think it was too bad, "It would be nice... and it is a Friday... Are you sure it's something that wouldn't be a bother?"

"Okay, fine!" Daizi laughed, hurrying downstairs to her husband, hearing him still talking to Ivy in the living room, and asking in her most coy tone, "Goose? Would you want to go out?"

"What, tonight?" Dark asked, looking up at her as Ivy tried to crawl onto his back.

"That makes you sound ancient, I can't believe you asked that," Daizi replied, "Where's your spontaneity?"

"He is forty," Daizi teased, sighing heavily and slumping against the wall, "I'm a young thirty-eight, he's in a completely different decade of life."

"Daizi, I am one year older than you."

"A year and a half!" Daizi protested, "We're basically from different centuries."

"A year and a half, if we accept my fictional birthday actually is in January." Dark replied, rising to his feet.

"He may be even older than I am!"

Over the past two years, Daizi had earned some acclaim for being a strong woman, even though sometimes she didn't feel like she was. But in this moment she used all of the strength she knew she had to resist making the ten thousand jokes which ran through her head at her son's comments. It was possible her tongue was bleeding, it was okay. Her expression hadn't changed, she was fairly certain. After a moment, she very carefully said, "That's true, he is ancient. So we better take our chances to go out together while we still have them."

Certain he could hear every joke Daizi held back in the tone of her voice, Dark said, "Surely I am allowed to change first."

"I bet Mama's willing to wait for you to change, as long as you don't make her wait too long," Xander drawled.

Alec nodded. "If you take too long, she might leave without you."

Dark shook his head and said not a word as he retreated upstairs to change his clothes.

Lingering downstairs for a few moments longer, Daizi said, "Thank you for offering to watch Ivy for this. It'll be nice for us to get out of the house."

"You are very welcome!" Alec said cheerfully, edging toward Xander. "We are always happy to look after her!" He waited until he felt Daizi wasn't paying attention and then whispered to Xander, "When were you going to mention to me we were doing this?"

"The next time I saw you. Mama got downstairs first," Xander murmured back. "Got anything better to do?"

"Nope. I just prefer a heads-up. Still, it'll be fun!"

"Thought as much," Xander agreed with a nod.
