How Green Becomes Wood

"I think that makes sense. I feel like... I don't know, I feel like whenever someone lives through something like that, they either try to keep their belongings scarce or they want to own a lot to make up for what they couldn't keep." Sloan replied, rubbing the back of her neck, "It isn't really something I have any experience with though. I'm sorry. Maybe... Well, maybe one day it won't feel that way for you anymore. Even if you never want to own a million things."

Xander turned a bit to frown at Sloan. "Nah, it's cool. I'm glad you don't have experience or anything like that. Nothing to say sorry for. I was just kind of talking out loud. I think Alec and I are opposite sides of that coin: I don't like a lot, he doesn't like a little. It's alright, though. I like everything I have, and I'm grateful that now I've got so much stuff I get antsy. It's kind of a nice problem to have, as ridiculous as that sounds. But I did have to grab everything and run, you can bet I'd be grabbing my cacti, my earings, and my dumpster fire socks."

Sloan grinned, "Well you'd need your dumpster fire socks if you had to grab everything and run. They're thematic to the situation." She glanced behind her, "That's the good thing about having a car this size, though, you can fit a lot in it in an emergency. My car is too small for that."

Xander glanced back as if he'd never realized how big his van was. "Huh. Maybe that's why I picked this one. I could practically live in it if I needed to. I'd need to figure out some kind of shelving situation for my cacti in the windows, though, because I don't think they'd like the dashboard. I wouldn't want them there, either."

"A cactus on the dashboard seems like a ticket to the ER if you have to slam on your breaks," Sloan agreed, "I honestly just picked my car because it's cute. A car like this is good, though, you get to carry your whole family."

"Yep. Any time we all need to go, there's no way we're fitting in Ba's car, so it's mine," Xander said. He patted the dashboard and started the car to warm it up a bit. "It's a good vehicle. It has some quirks, like the left turn signal getting stuck if I don't turn sharp enough, so I have to smack the steering column."

"Your dad has a really nice car, I almost feel bad. I doubt he expected a situation where everyone couldn't fit in it," Sloan said, "In my car, the tire pressure warning light is always on, even with brand new tires. It's not a big deal, but I keep thinking when I have a different car some day, I'll forget to pay attention when the light goes on."

"I still want to do social work or be a guidance counselor," Sloan replied, "and suffer and probably hate my choices. But I figure I was forced to think way more about my future than anyone should have to, so I may as well put those skills to good use."

"You won't have any credentials, so I don't think you could charge, but you might need whatever the guidance counselor version of 'field hours' would be," Xander pointed out with a smirk.
