How Green Becomes Wood

"I'm fairly certain deets came from when we were teenagers," Cooger said, heading up the steps of the cabin, "It's getting cold outside, I'm gonna get started on dinner. We can have a fire later, if y'all want, though."

"I dunno, are you?" Xander asked, following him. "What about that light bulb you could clap and turn on and off? That was in your hay day, wasn't it? So why can't dinner be turned on and off?"

"He makes no sense when he's hungry," Alec snickered.

"Tarot, how do you live with this?" Cooger grumbled as he started finishing dinner for everybody, only glancing up at Dark quietly beginning to help him prepare everything, "I know how Dark eats, now you've got him. And you know, Xander, I explicitly put out snacks and appetizers to tide y'all over."

Sitting on the couch with a cat in her lap, Daizi only shrugged and said, "I've got a lot of practice, and they're somehow all less demanding than Ivy is when she's hungry. God help me when she was only an infant."

"Snacks only last you so long, especially when you have competition," Xander said, nodding toward Alec, who was holding a bag of chips. He started getting out the plates and things Cooger needed.

"I don't envy your food bill, that's for sure," Lex said.

"I shop carefully," Dark said, washing his hands before immediately beginning to chop vegetables for Cooger while he started cooking the patties, "and it helps Cooger grows so many vegetables. While they're harvestable, we get vegetables for free from the homestead and fruit from Daizi's garden at home."

"It was definitely something we needed to consider when Dark became a stay-at-home father," Daizi admitted, "But it's okay. I keep joking that, worst case, I'll just write another book."

"I enjoyed the trip we were able to take to Point Pleasant," Dark replied, turning around to look at them.

"I think, overall, it is something I'd enjoy doing again, but it'd need to be for the right topic," Daizi admitted, "and Ivy would need to be a bit older, I think, because it just takes up so much of my free time."

When it was time to eat, the twins eagerly attacked the burgers. They and Toby seemed to be having some kind of eating contest. Xander came out on top, if they were, with Toby right behind, and Alec bringing up the rear. Afterward, they all lounged like lions after a successful hunt before heading down to the pond - after telling the adults where they were going. The rest of the day was spent enjoying life as a rambunctious teenager.

Lex enjoyed it by cozying up to Cooger when she had the chance and just enjoying some time with him. She was by no means clingy, but she did have a quota she needed to fill for physical touch, and it was a wonderful feeling being able to sit next to him, his arm around her, staring off into the beautiful woods and over the pond with cats all around them. Eventually, she suggested the adults all head into the woods, with or without the teens, since neither she nor Daizi had gotten to go in yet and see Cooger's new land.

Cooger didn't think much of sitting with his arm around Lex. It was just nice. It was a quiet evening, it was getting chilly, and it was nice to have somebody to hold. There was not much to complain about at all. At Lex's suggestion, Daizi agreed it would be lovely to go walking through it, but Dark had to check with the twins first so somebody was there for Ivy. With a little grumble, though, Daizi said they should just bring her. They had her sling so she'd stay warm all bundled, and the bounce of the walk would surely soothe her to sleep for the rest of the night.

Lex moved away from the cabin so she wouldn't wake Ivy when she called out and had Toby come closer so she could tell him and the twins their plans. Toby considered going with them, but ultimately decided to stay at the pond with the twins. He was teaching them how to catch turtles and release them without hurting anything. Lex left them to it and rejoined the other adults for a walk through the forest. It was a beautiful, chilly night, and it felt a bit like fall even though it wasn't. It brought to mind spooky Halloween nights and telling ghost stories and daring each other to do things like walk through the woods in the dar.
