How Green Becomes Wood

"I'm not too worried about how I'll place, mostly because it's not a big meet, but you know," She shrugged, "Even when you know you're in the right place, the first time you do anything there, you can still have those sorts of doubts. Like I'm not anxious-anxious and feeling like an imposter, but it's my debut, right?"

"I think feeling butterflies is part of the fun at the beginning," Alec mused. "Especially when it's not full imposter syndrome. It feels like getting amped up to me. Like anything is possible! That includes failure, but it could also be something mind-blowingly awesome, or just a nice, standard run."

"That's a good way of looking at it," Sloan agreed, "I guess I'm just amped up. I want to prove myself, you know? Even if I don't place, I want to show to the other competitors I'm definitely here for a reason."

Alec grinned back, waggling his eyebrows. "Oooo, now you're really shooting for the stars and going for the kill! I have no idea how those two metaphors mix, but they do."

"I want to make an impression," She grinned, "That's why I need my nails to match my leotard on the day. I'm glad we get to do this, though, I feel like we don't hang out just us enough."

"I know! We're always so busy," Alec sighed. "And getting my nails done iskind of... Well, I love it," he admitted, blushing. "I find it incredibly relaxing, but it's weird to do it alone. I don't know why, it just is, but everyone is so busy these days, or they don't like having their nails done. It's nice to be able to sit and talk without being at school or somewhere hectic."

"I think a lot of people get theirs done alone, but it's probably different if you're not a middle aged woman getting away from the kids," Sloan grinned, "I can't do it too often, just because with what I do my nail polish chips so quickly it's not worth the cost, but it is nice. Have you ever invited Emma?"

Alec snickered at the idea of either of them being a middle-aged woman. He shook his head at her question. "Well, techinically I did , once, but she thinks getting it done professionally is a waste of money when a bottle of cheap nail polish and a steady hand does the job just fine. She's also not a big fan of me getting my nails all colorful." He smiled at his choices of color. "She's not going to be thrilled with the gold glitter. She could probably withstand the blue, but she's totally going to frown and huff about the glitter."

"She can frown and huff all she likes," Sloan replied easily, "They're your hands. I guess she has a point about it being expensive, but I think everyone has their sometimes treat."

Alec laughed at that. "Oh, man! I can't imagine getting a face tattoo at all, let alone of someone's face, but if I did that? Oh, man! Divorce, probably, or at least sleeping on the couch until I got it removed."

"Hmm, then I could literally never escape her," Alec said, making a face at the idea of it. "Although, I guess it does open up a lot of opportunities for a 'what's on your face?' 'Don't you mean who's on my face?' jokes. If you would get a face tattoo, what would you get?"

"Hmmm..." Sloan thought about it. "I think little star-shaped freckles. I'm not sure what colour they'd be in, but I always wanted freckles when I was little. Is it cheating to get faux-freckles as my face tattoo?"

"Not if they are stars!" Alec chirped. "I'm struggling to think of something I'd be willing to put on my face. I think it'd be something abstract, though. Maybe... Oh! How about a small, very decorative sun on one cheek?
