How Green Becomes Wood

Ivy was doing her best to get the things for him, viewing it as some sort of game and chirping with delight everytime she was praised for doing something correctly. Still, sometimes she was unsuccessful at getting what Xander wanted.

"I wonder if I ever have properly related to it," Daizi replied, not sitting down because she wasn't sure exactly where he was resting, "Is being fuzzy better than you were this morning? Dark told me he had to help you upstairs."

"Weird," Daizi answered, crouching down when Ivy ran up and hugged her leg, "but today was my last day in the office this week. For the next month, I'll be working Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but we agreed just for this first week I'd only have two days there. I've been told you've been philosophical today."

Ivy babbled up at her, stretching upwards to hug her mother around the neck, "That sounds very impressive, Habibti! You've been very helpful to your brother, what a good girl!" Then, she turned her head and asked, "How do you feel about what she's done?"

"She's doing good," Xander said, pulling himself up to sit up properly and propping his foot on a pillow. "Gets it right most of the time when I ask her to fetch something, and it's kept her entertained. She's a good mini. Almost as good as a puppy. The cat is not as good as a puppy and keeps trying to sit on either my foot or my head. Alec's got her off somewhere now."

"Almost as good as a puppy," Daizi repeated with a laugh, "Do you hear that, Hummingbird? You're almost as good as a puppy. I'd be offended on her behalf if you weren't on pain medicine. Has Enkidu fetched you anything?" At the moment, the dog was laying dutifully at Xander's side, recognizing he was unwell in some way, and was therefore reticent to leave him.

"No, but he's been a very good dog, the best dog, and keeping an eye on me," Xander reported, reaching down to pet Enkidu.

Alec came clattering down the stairs with Kiki in her sling on his chest. "I hear a mother coming home after a hard day's work! Hi, Mama! Careful, I have Kiki in her sling." He went to hug her, waiting until they were close to whisper, "I have recordings for you to listen to."

"Then I would argue she is better than a puppy," Daizi replied, "Since ours hasn't brought you anything and she has." As Alec entered the room, Daizi kissed Ivy on the cheek, but she turned to hug him with one arm when he came up. Hearing his whispers, her face sparkled, "I'll be glad to hear them. Where is your father? Hopefully not poking through the ingredients I brought home."

"Ivy is much better than a puppy, and she has done very well in looking after him," Alec grinned. "I'm not sure where Ba is. I think in the kitchen? Ba!"

Kiki blinked sleepily at Daizi and purred loudly enough that Daizi could easily hear her. She was happy to see the other person!

Xander reached down to pet Enkidu. "Oh. Sloan stopped by. That was nice."
