How Green Becomes Wood

"That's a really understandable thing to be afraid of," Daizi agreed, "And I guess in a way, I'm a sort of... interloper. I disrupted the close relationship Dark and Cooger had, before me. Dark didn't have as much time to spend with him, anymore... But Cooger and I also became friends with each other in our own right, and now, all of these years since high school, we're still together, we moved states to still be near each other. You and Alec have a closer bond than Dark and Cooger have, so you're in an even better position."

"Yeah." Xander nodded and found a handful of berries. "Yeah, you're right. I know, logically, that this is all good stuff, and that we'll be fine, Alec and me, but I keep... thinking stuff like that. I know it's illogical, but I can't fully shake them. I've been trying. For his sake."

"That, but also... If he has kids, then you get to be an uncle, and, presumably, whoever he ends up marrying will have similar interests to him, so he'll have someone to go clothes shopping with who actually enjoys doing it. You'll be able to enjoy him getting to do things he loves without having to be the one to do them with," Daizi said, trying to think of examples, "And if you form a good relationship with whatever woman he's serious with, then you'll be able to scheme with her to do nice things for him."

"That's... I hadn't really thought of it that way," Xander said, somewhat surprised. "Those good things. Except for the uncle part." He glanced toward Ivy. "Though I guess that wouldn't be the worst thing ever. Being an uncle. And it is fun to scheme good things. And not have to go shopping."
