How Green Becomes Wood

"Cool. Hope you like riding in the bug. Unfortunately, one of you'll have to be in the back, but neither of you are, like, super tall so it shouldn't be too terrible. Definitely better than the bus anyway."

She sat back, feeling like if they accepted her offer to drive them to school every day, then they were definitely copascetic, "What side of the road do they drive on in Australia, Peter?"

"The left side, which used to be the majority of the world, but a lot of places have switched to the right side, like here in the United States," Peter explained. "I'm not sure why they switch. The left side is perfectly fine for driving."

"Seems weird to me," Xander grumbled.

"Only because that's not how you grew up," Peter pointed out.

"They probably switched because when people started driving on the right side, and everyone debated over which way was better, those who drove on our side were able to say, 'I mean the side we drive on is literally right,' and there wasn't a good enough comeback," Sloan suggested.

That earned a bit of chortling and laughter, and the conversation moved on to other things. The bell rang far too soon, and Alec and Xander headed off to class with Peter, assuring Sloan they'd talk later. Things weren't perfect, but they were better.

The talk Dark had to have with the principal later that day went much more smoothly than he anticipated: the amount of witnesses to the fight made it abundantly clear who had began the altercation, even without talking to to either twin, so in regards to permanent records, the event was largely forgotten.

Finally, then, with interpersonal high school drama concluded, it seemed lasting peace had finally been achieved. Dark doubted it, he was pretty sure that after the first world war there had been a promise of peace--the war to end all wars--and everytime they felt they could simply breathe some new tsuris seemed to rattle their lives back into disarray.

Upon hearing her husband's concerns, Daizi pointed out how even when they lived alone there was always some new unexpected stressor throwing a spanner in the works, be it a broken down car, a flooded basement, a dog's broken paw, or the dissolution of a long-term friendship. As long as all their new drama was on the level as the Alec and Crystal saga (prior to its escalation into physical violence), then they were all doing just fine. And, at the very least, Enkidu was doing marvelous, so September went without any further incident.

Oh, it was true that Crystal, in a bid to reclaim power, began to tell students nasty things about 'Mr. Dark's wife' to try to hurt the twins, but all that really came of it was one student giving Dark a sympathy card regarding, 'Mrs. Dark's horrible accident.' Later, she was overheard remarking about how hopefully now, after the 'inevitable divorce', he'll think of her, and about if it would be weird for Alec and Xander to have her as a new step mom.

But even these comments died down quickly, and the only other events of note were the arrival of the gifts from Daizi's family and the Halloween decorations being put up. They transformed the already spooky house into the very model of a haunted house, both inside and out, but miraculously, it managed to remain tasteful and sophisticated and not at all like a Spirit Halloween exploded over their home. This was likely in part due to the lack of talking decorations.

All in all, things were good. Dark and Daizi seemed very much in love, a few times falling asleep on the couch together because they stayed up too late talking--which was followed by a very sore day when they woke up, since they were both too old, and Daizi too pregnant, to be comfortably sleeping all night not in their bed. It was evident the calmer environment was good for them.

The Saturday before Daizi's 34th week, which coincided with the high school's fall break, they dragged the twins to an apple orchard and pumpkin patch (two seperate places put together into one day) for fresh apple cider donuts, pumpkins, and ideal spooky vibes. It was a perfect, Autumnal day, and Dark promised they'd carve the pumpkins closer to Halloween itself, so the jack-o-lanterns would be fresh. Daizi slept hard on the car ride home, which was mostly attributed to her pregnancy but also to the her job's conference which was that coming week. She couldn't be there, of course, but she still needed to work for it, and the only shadow over their September/early October was the pressure she felt from her job.

It didn't seem surprising, then, that on Wednesday the 11th, she came home from work a bit earlier than usual--no more than an hour or so--seeming absolutely worn out. What did take Dark by surprise was the way she shuffled into the kitchen (Daizi had never developed a true waddle, likely due to her height. Even at 8 months, she maintained the energy of grace she had when the twins first met her. However, when she was very tired, or not feeling well, she did tend to shuffle instead of walk), put her arms around Dark and, without greeting anyone else, and only briefly petting Enkidu said, before anyone else had a chance to say anything, "I'm not feeling well, I'm going to go lie down, okay?"

"Oh dear," Alec murmured worriedly. "Can we get you anything? Do anything for you? Would you like a heating pad?"

"Would you let the woman rest," Xander scolded, pulling Alec back as he started walking toward Daizi. "She said she's not feeling well. The last thing she needs is to be quizzed. Just let her go lay down, and she'll let us know if she needs anything."

Alec watched Daizi, still worried. Something seemed off. Was she getting sick? He hoped not! None of them knew how to make the special soup!

Dark checked her forehead, and feeling it wasn't hot, kissed it sweetly, and held her close, and asked, "What feels wrong, Spider?"

"I don't know," she murmured, "I just feel weird. My back hurts but not like usual... I'm sort of nauseous... I don't know."

"You do not feel warm... I hope you are not catching the flu, we are coming to that season," Dark said, rubbing her back, "go upstairs and rest, darling."

"Okay..." She sighed, but didn't pull away from him quite yet, "Will you get me when dinner is ready?"

"Of course."

"Want me to make dinner?" Xander asked Dark, willing to do so if Dark wanted to focus on Daizi. He kept one hand on Alec's shoulder as if holding a puppy while Alec studied Daizi worriedly.

"How about soup?" Alec asked the room in general. "Soup is always good when you aren't feeling well."

Dark kissed the top of Daizi's head, "Do you want me to stay up there with you?"

"I'm just going to fall asleep," She replied, finally pulling away from him, "so it doesn't really matter."

"Okay..." Dark murmured, taking a long look at her. Then he turned to Xander, "You can start it. I will stay with her until she falls asleep. Does that sound okay?"

Daizi nodded, and began slowly making her way upstairs, "Soup sounds good," she mumbled, "but whatever you'd like is best, habibi..." Dark sighed, figuring if she was still calm enough to prioritize the twins, she couldn't be too sick. It didn't make him not worried, only slightly less worried, and he followed her upstairs.

"Soup it is," Xander said, heading for the kitchen. "Come on, Alec. Help me pick out which one would be best. Then you can skulk on the stairs and pretend not to be spying."

"Gee, I am so terribly sorry for being worried," Alec huffed, but he did follow his brother.

"It's not the worried part, it's the bit where you're completely underfoot," Xander told him. "Better to be helpful than in the way. So! Which soup do we make?"

Alec calmed a little, realizing Xander was worried, too. He went through the selection of soup recipes with him, looking for the appropriate soup.

Upstairs, Daizi changed out of her work clothes and into pajamas and then crawled into bed. Dark, not changing his clothes, crawled in beside her. He tried to make conversation, but she wasn't in the mood to talk, so he rubbed her back, lying beside her, until, eventually, she fell asleep.

Dark pulled the blanket over her, and stayed beside her for a little while longer, until he eventually came down, seeming much more tired than he had before Daizi came home, "Thank you for starting dinner," he pushing his hair back with one hand, "Where can I help?"

Xander eyed the goop in the pot skeptically. "I think I'm making red lintel soup, but I didn't think it was supposed to turn out this green."

"It looks yellow to me," Alec offered, "and it smells really good so far."

Xander indicated for Dark to come take a look. "Opinion, Professor?"

"Are you colorblind, Xander?" Dark asked, not making fun of him at all. Red-Green colourblindness was not rare. He leaned over the pot to look, "the colour is meant to be sort of... yellow-orange, actually, not bright red. So it looks about correct."

Dark picked up the recipe and read through it quickly, although he could only guess at what the twins had already done, since they were getting better at cleaning while they cooked. Finally he just decided to handle the situation like any self-respecting cook would, and went in and grabbed a spoon, which he handed to Xander, "Taste it. The colour is secondary. Daizi's soup is green, but the greatest soup in all the world."

"Not so far as I'm aware, it just looks more greenish to me. Kind of. Yellow/green," Xander muttered. He took the spoon reluctantly. "I thought you were the one who's supposed to give opinions."

"Is the cook not going to taste his own cooking?" Alec teased.

Xander made a face at him and tried a bit. "Hmm. Tastes pretty lentil-ly to me," he declared. "Not bad. Not great, but not bad. Maybe bland is better if she's feeling poorly?"

Dark took another spoon and tasted the soup, so he could give an accurate opinion, but also so he didn't have to reply right away. It was almost imperceptible, but he stood a little less tall, "It is somewhat bland. If we add more salt, but not enough to make it salty, it would be a good start. But," he made a conscious effort to bite back worry. She had recently had a flu shot, it was normal to feel weird. It was fine. By tomorrow she'd probably be feeling fine, "if she is nauseous, yes, it being bland is probably better. That does not mean, though, we need to limit ourselves, we can set a bowl aside for her and season the rest more thoroughly..." He cracked the mildest of smiles, "And then ask which version she wants. Daizi will fuss if we did not give her the option."

Xander rolled his eyes, feeling this was all just a bit silly, but he got out a bowl and ladled in about what he thought Daizi might eat. Then he started cautiously adding in a bit of salt and other spices a tiny pinch at a time.

Alec stood staring at Dark, eyes narrowed as he studied him. "Are you sure she's alright?" he asked quietly.

Dark looked down at him, and then glanced back at the stairs for a moment, "I think so. I will check on her again. But people get sick, it happens. And when you are pregnant you have a weaker immune system... She is not acting differently than how she usually does when she feels ill, so..." He shrugged, rubbing the back of his neck, "Of course I am worried about her, but when she caught a bad cold last year I was worried about her. She had tuberculosis as a kid, I doubt anything she can contract here in adulthood will be a huge problem."

Xander and Alec both looked at Dark now and glanced at each other. They couldn't tell for certain, but both had the feeling that Dark was trying to convince himself as much as them that there was nothing to worry about. Xander turned his focus back on the soup and gave it a final taste test before deciding it was good. Alec set the table and pulled out a tray in case Daizi wanted to have dinner in bed. Xander got out the bread and started buttering it while Alec scooped out a second bowl for Daizi.

"I guess everything is ready," Xander told Dark.

"Right," Dark nodded, and then looked at the stairs, "Do you think I should wake her? I know she said to, but... Well, sleep is important."

It was only then that he turned and saw the tray so they could bring food upstairs, "Oh," he remarked, "smart." He took the tray and went upstairs to bring it to Daizi, deciding that he'd wake her just enough to ask what she wanted, and about ten or so minutes later he came back down, with the soup, and said, "She said she wants to sleep a little longer and that she'll come down to eat, so I brought the soup down so I could keep it warm for her."

About the same time he said this, everyone's phone buzzed at slightly different times: First Alec's, then Dark's, then Xander's, although if the sound wasn't on or the phone was in a pocket, the timing of this was probably missed, and it more or less came together as all going off at once, and all had the same text (or mostly the same text) from Daizi: I'm okay, I just don't feel well, relax. Promise I'm not dying. Dark's message was slightly altered to include a little heart, and Alec's included, "Breathe, habibi," and Xander's included, "Thanks for making dinner habibi."

Alec had left his phone on vibrate on the edge of the counter, and he had to lunge to catch it before it vibrated itself off the edge. He read her message and smiled slightly, both pleased and embarrassed that she knew him so well. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly with a little nod.

Xander's phone was in the perfectly reasonable location of his pocket, and he just barely heard the ding. He pulled it out and checked it as if he were regarding a professional email. He replied, You're welcome. It's being kept warm. He read it three times before sending it off.

"Should we eat, or should we wait?" Alec wanted to know.
