How Green Becomes Wood

Flirting with his wife could wait. Swimming swiftly towards Xander, he pushed the life jacket first towards him so Xander could hopefully see it and grab it, "It is okay, hm?" From what he could see up close there was no immediate issue, but his son was certainly freaking out. So, not knowing how likely it was Xander would focus back in and recognize he was okay, Dark scruffed the back of Xander's shirt to stabilize him somewhat, "I have your jacket, ibni, you are okay."

Xander coughed, instantly calming when Dark grabbed the back of his shirt. He caught hold of the jacket and held on. "Ow. Salt water burns," he croaked. He got a better grip on the jacket and nodded. "I'm fine. I'm fine. Just slipped."

"Why is your suggestion always to drink water?" Xander grumbled, but he climbed into the boat without further complaint.

Alec handed him a water. "Need help getting your jacket back on?"

"Nah, I got it," Xander told him and pulled it on reluctantly. Then he took the water and sat down to watch Dark and Daizi.

"Because it is hot out, we are in full sun, and you are doing physical activity." Dark replied laconically. "If you had been running on a track, you would not question it."

Dark and Daizi did spend some more time in the water together, although Dark got out first, sitting on the edge of the boat with his feet in the ocean, drinking water and watching his wife. It had only been three days, but whereas the twins had subtle burns they were treating with aloe, he had tanned significantly, although his was less obvious than his wife's, because her bikini top left evident tan lines. She didn't stay in the water for as long as she might've liked, because she knew everyone else was on the boat waiting for her, so eventually she climbed back up, dried off, and Dark more or less made everyone line up to reapply sunscreen.

When Dark drove them around for a little while, Daizi found the most private spot she could find and turned her back to everyone else so she could nurse, allowing herself to daydream they were, in fact, on a dramatic adventure. Maybe pirates, maybe exiles, and as she fed her daughter, she told her all about Danae, mother of Perseus, who gave birth to him while trapped in a wooden box and set out to sea, and how Danae would've fed her baby while the waves rocked them just like this, and how big and strong Perseus grew up to be. "You can be a hero, too, Hummingbird," Daizi cooed, forgetting everything else for the moment, "I bet you will be."

Once her baby properly fed and comfy, she turned back around and asked, "Can I drive now?"

Xander eventually talked Alec into sitting on the edge with his feet in the water, and Alec agreed once Dark had Ivy in his arms nice and secure. He'd greatly enjoyed the time he'd gotten to spend with his little sister chilling on a boat while everyone else bobbed around on the waves. That was his kind of adventure! But he did agree to sit and let his feet dangle and even managed not to think about ocean monsters for a bit. Lining up for sunscreen made them both laugh, but they didn't say one word of argument.

When Daizi came back onto the boat, the twins moved to the opposite side and let her nurse in private. At least that way Ivy wouldn't get distracted. That had to be a win, right?

Then it came time for Daizi to drive!

"Go for it, Mama!" Alec encouraged while he and Xander quickly made sure everything was secure.

"There's not even that many boats out right now, so there's almost nothing to hit," Xander assured her, finding a secure seat.

"Okay," Daizi exhaled, going up to the helm. Dark stood close beside her, explaining how everything worked and helping her to feel the controls. Then, he hoisted the anchor, and nervously, Daizi started the boat.

At first, everytime she did anything, she asked Dark if it was okay, if they were okay, and he stood near her, confirming she was doing okay, helping to direct her when she asked.

"You can go faster," He told her when she seemed to be getting more comfortable.

"I can?"

"Yes. I think you should try."

With even more hesitation, Daizi sped up, and although she didn't dare put it at full speed, she laughed first nervously and then gleefully because for the first time in her life, she got to control the vehicle.

Alec and Xander stayed where they were seated, holding on tight but enjoying themselves. Alec tried to stay quiet, afraid he'd distract Daizi, but Xander let out a whoop as Daizi sped up more and more. It wasn't as fast as, say, a speed boat, but it was still very fast! They were glad they weren't wearing hats at the moment as they would have been gone, gone, gone.

"I'm okay?" Daizi asked, feeling certain something was bound to go wrong. This was like running freely on the beach, only so, so much more.

"You are doing perfect." Had this been different, he might have tried tricking her a little bit, but it was too important and she was too nervous. They were, essentially, listing one way, and then listing the other way, because Daizi had never seen how far someone actually needs to turn to significantly change directions, or how much it was really necessary to move the wheel.

"You know," she called back to the twins, "I'm also really good at bumper cars. Because you're supposed to run into things, then."

"This is awesome!" Alec called to encourage her. "This is fantastic!"

"You're really good at not running into things out here," Xander told her. "Faster!"

"No, this speed's good!" Alec replied quickly.

"I keep thinking I'm going to hit a whale!" Daizi laughed, increasing the speed slightly.

"Luckily, whales can go further down than we can," He looked around them, making sure they weren't likely to hit an unexpected sandbank or another boater. "We are okay."

"You all just get to do this whenever you want?" A slightly larger wave rocked the boat making Daizi yelp, but Dark squeezed her shoulder to reassure her.

When the novelty of it wore off, after moving hardly at all, Daizi stepped back from the helm, rather proud of herself, and asked, "Do either of you want to try?"

"Absolutely!" Xander said enthusiastically, standing up.

"Absolutely no," Alec stated, holding tighter to his seat. "Are you sure it's safe to let him drive?" He hadn't said one word about being nervous about Daizi driving.

With a shrug, Daizi replied, "I did it blind, so how hard could it be?"

"I will keep an eye on him," Dark assured Alec, handing Ivy back to Daizi as she sat back down, "but I am not too concerned."

"There are no icebergs here, I learned."

"Yay, no ice burgs," Alec said weakly.

Xander took the helm, made sure he understood how the controls worked, and then steadily sped the boat up. He was tempted to gun it, but didn't want to throw Ivy off the boat with the jerk or something. He cranked up the speed as much as he could and stood grinning like a red-headed pirate having just commandeered his first ship.

Daizi didn't feel particularly concerned, Xander could drive a car going faster and with more people around. This was easier, certainly. She had been able to do it, anyway. It'd be easier for him. But, knowing Alec was nervous, she sat beside him and said, "We scheduled the dolphin tour for tomorrow morning. They say it's the best time. And afterwards, I thought we could build the sandcastles."

Alec managed a smile. "I can't wait to do sandcastles!" he told her. "And dolphins. Maybe one will let you touch it."

Xander started singing a sea shanty and swinging the boat back and forth in a slalom pattern across the water, taking it wide and steady and hopping along the waves with ease. Boating was fun!

"They're wild, so I'm not sure how likely that is," She leaned her shoulder against him, standing Ivy up on her lap but holding her firmly, "That would be nice, though. It's really okay, though, I'm sure I'll hear the dolphins splash, and if not, I still get the sea breeze in my hair."

Dark held onto the ship with only one hand, but he didn't really feel like he needed it. Xander was doing just fine, and clearly enjoying himself. He liked to be in control of any sort of transportation, it seemed. Maybe he'd get his pilot's license some day.

"Maybe they'll squeal and squeak!" Alec said hopefully, leaning back against Daizi. "That would be so cool to hear!"

The boat only went maybe forty miles and hour, not exactly a speedster, but that was still fast enough to get the wind going and make it hop a little on the waves. Xander drove it in a big circle and finally slowed down. "Alright, that's enough of that," he said, fully satisfied at least for now. He offered the wheel back to Dark.

"No thanks, I'm not really eager to drive a boat," Alec said, turning to eye the wheel suspiciously. If he took the wheel, a sandbar was certain to pop up out of nowhere and snag them.
