How Green Becomes Wood

"Not all theatre is like that, don't worry. You don't expect all movies to have the same experience, do you?" Daizi asked, trying to soothe her poor, traumatized boy.

"I am sure in the future Ciara will do more research into the shows she goes to see," Dark commented, quietly amused by it all. This is exactly what he had expected.

Alec giggled and pushed himself up off of Daizi's lap, though he remained sitting on the floor. "I can't believe she didn't. I guess she heard 'classic' and maybe 'longest running show' and made some assumptions."

"Yeah, well, that assumption definitely made an ass out of a couple of people tonight," Xander grumbled. Then he stopped as realization dawned and he glared between Dark and Alec. "You two knew about this. You knew exactly what that show was about."

"Well," Alec drew out, smirking.

"Why didn't you warn me?" Xander demanded.

"You did not ask," Dark replied simply. "but at the same time, I am not certain I do know what the show is about. A bunch of cats choosing who gets to die and introducing themselves, I suppose. But if I had said that, I do not know if we would not still be sitting here having this discussion."

"We would not," Xander agreed bluntly.

"You know, the people who created the musical went and asked T. S. Elliot what the story was about," Alec said. "He replied, 'It's about cats.' That's it. So, they added in the Memories song to give it a bit of structure, and it's now about a bunch of stories about cats as the father of cats chooses which one gets to be reborn into the next life."

"Weird that they made the musical without even being clear on what it was about," Xander muttered. "But why Grissabella and not Gus?"

"Because Gus had it good in this life, and Deuteronomy thought Grissabella should have a chance at retrying her life," Alec shrugged.

"And Gus was accepted and loved," Daizi added. "I've heard that for most of the story, the other cats won't even tough Grissabella, but they're touching each other the entire time. I don't really... like... Cats, because when a musical is more focused on dancing, costumes, and spectacle than anything else, it's hard for it to really hit for me, but I do cry every time I hear Memory."

"It wouldn't be a great musical for someone who couldn't see," Alec said sympathetically. "I adored it, but it must be so hard for you!"

"Not hard, boring," Xander semi-corrected. "The dances go on forever and ever when they aren't being weird."

"I like the song about the moonlight," Alec said. "Especially in unison with Memories." He sighed and laid his head back in Daizi's lap. "So beautiful!"

Daizi settled back down, playing idly with Alec's hair, "I want to see Hadestown when it comes here. You may still not like it, Xander, because it's about Orpheus and Eurydice, and you may find the love story broken, but some of my friends have seen it, and they told me that I'd love it, and also forbid me from listening to the soundtrack until I hear it live, so I don't know much about it."

"I'd like to go to that with you, if I may," Alec asked, relaxing and enjoying the feeling of having his hair played with as he came down from his excitement.

Xander shook his head and started undoing the top couple of buttons on his shirt. "I'm just glad it's over with. I'm going to get out of this shirt and into something comfy. Night all."

"I'd be glad for you to come. Dark's going to come with, it would be nice if we could get all of us who are capable of sitting through a production to go see it together, but otherwise, it can be us three. We'll find a babysitter." Daizi told him, "Goodnight, Xander. Sleep well."

"I wonder if Aunt Ciara would like it? She'll probably research this one in depth before saying yes or no," Alec commented. He sat up and stretched. "Hmm, Tristan's never mentioned musicals. I wonder if he'd like it?"

From up on the stairs, Xander called down, "Sloan."

"Oh, Sloan would love it!" Alec agreed. "At least, I think she would. But I should probably go to bed, too."

"He might, and she might, but I don't think we need to book an entire section for all of our friends and family." Daizi said, smoothing his hair as he sat up and then snuggled back in against her bear of a husband. Whose name she had chosen, who had a name now, who she was going to propose to.

Dark reached around her, pulling her back in to his side, "You probably should. We can talk more in the morning, I want to hear how your first trip out with your aunt went."

"I can't wait to tell you all about it," Alec grinned. "Just know that it was pretty awesome! And she comports herself well when shocked by something she didn't expect to see." He cackled and headed upstairs for bed.

Daizi laughed along with Alec and then settled back down. They knew they should probably get to bed too, but... they could spend a little bit more time together, before sneaking back upstairs for extra privacy before falling into a peaceful sleep for the night.

The next morning, Alec nearly slept in, but Xander woke him up and dragged him out of bed. He had one more day of work to do! He came downstairs to join the family for breakfast and told Dark and Daizi all about how things had gone with Ciara. He commented on how she was a good conversationalist and the fact that she knew some martial arts. Most of their time together had been sitting watching the show, so there wasn't actually a lot to talk about, but she received a gold star in his book. Then it was time to go to work, so he gave Dark, Daizi, and Ivy a hug, and Xander drove him off to work.

Daizi found everything Alec explained fascinating and even more interested in inviting Ciara out for a night with her friends, and she wondered allowed if Ciara would actually agree to something like that or if she'd feel uncomfortable accepting. But she wanted to see what Ciara was like when she allowed herself to relax.

When Alec went to work, she made her goodbyes, and since it was the weekend for her, she settled in for a day fully focused on her infant.

After Xander dropped Alec off at work for another day of being the bottom man on the totem pole (today was learning the filing system and how to make labels for the files as well as yet more sweeping), and then went to mail some of his latest sales. After, since it was close, he went by the junkyard where he stood and watched the dog for a bit. The dog sat and glared back, but it looked bored. It was clearly getting used to Xander's strange habit. He couldn't have said why he liked coming here other than it was usually very quiet. Nobody seemed to really like a small park next to a park outside of the ner do wells, and most of them didn't come out until after dark. Most of them. A small pack of feral teens came by, and Xander took that as his cue to leave. With his grey and black less-than-spotless clothes, he looked like he might belong in such a pack, and he wasn't interested in getting involved in that sort of trouble. He stopped by the store to pick up some basic staples for the house and a couple of treats, and then headed home to see what sort of mischief Ivy had gotten up to while he was gone.

When Xander came home, Ivy quickly crawled over to him and sat down by his feet, babbling up at him, and Daizi came around the corner to find where her baby had gotten to, and then offered Xander a summery, frozen drink she had made before inviting him to come outside with them, while also being more than willing to give him space if he preferred that. It was a nice day, but storms were on the horizon, so she wanted to make use of the last good day before the rain came.

Xander crouched down when Ivy crawled over and nodded to her as she babbled, replying seriously, not taking even the slightest bit of "baby talk" tone with her. When Daizi came over, he thanked her for the drink and agreed to come outside, though first he had some stuff to put away. He handed Daizi a rock almost absently, telling her he'd seen it and thought she would like it. It was an interestingly shaped and textured rock, though nothing actually special. Just a different kind of normal. He finished putting everything away and then headed out into the back to help Daizi keep an eye on Ivy.

While outside with her brother and mother, Ivy happily crawled around, exploring all of the new places she couldn't reach before and getting stopped from getting into trouble, so Daizi was glad for the help. Dark sat outside his shed, this time, so he could watch as he worked, but Daizi had told him that since he was really Ivy's primary caregiver during the week, he should take more time on the weekends to do things for himself, so he was. As Ivy played, something suddenly caught her eye, and she squeaked the sounds she typically made when she saw something interesting she couldn't reach.

"What's that, Hummingbird? What's there?" Daizi asked, sitting up beside her daughter, who made the noise again, and for the first time, pointed at something in the distance: a little rabbit who had come to nibble on some leaves.

"That's a rabbit," Xander informed her. He didn't instantly think of her pointing. Then he realized and added, "Oh, and Ivy just pointed at it. I don't think she's done that before."
