How Green Becomes Wood

"When I saw Saladin he didn't look more annoyed than he normally looks around Dark, so I figured you must have been well behaved," Cooger chuckled, hopping into his truck, "You won't have to see them again until after school tomorrow, so that will be freeing for you. They're all staying what, five days? I know it's not a long."

"That was a long, complicated, stressful trip for only a five day stay, but I think it's probably for the best. They need to get home and take care of things, and I don't think Daizi could take the strain for much longer," Alec remarked.

"I couldn't take the strain for much longer," Xander grumbled, leaning back.

"Visas can only last so long. I think they would stay longer if it were feasible, but Saladin still works, even though he's old, and it's hard to drop everything for a longer time with no notice." He shrugged, "Plus nobody knows when Ivy can go home, so staying crammed into that tiny room forever will be awful. I think if they could, they'd stick around long enough to help Dark and Daizi transition into having her home, but visas have to have a 'I will be gone by this date' expiry."

Cooger glanced at Xander, "Is Saladin still on the verge of crucifing Dark?"

"Fair and fair," Alec nodded thoughtfully, staring out the window. He didn't feel very talkative at the moment, though he did not want to come across as unappreciative toward Cooger. He was just tired. He felt he didn't deserve to be tired, but he was.

Xander huffed softly. "Yeah. Basically. Very quietly. Least the aunts are on his side, but pretty much everyone is letting it slide so there's no screaming matches in front of the mini. Not a great early experience if that were to happen."

"Yeah, Fadia is the only one of those four who ever thinks Tarot can do any wrong. I think because her mom died and she came out disabled and, uh, the way she did, they immediately decided she's someone they needed to give special care to and protect, and then she proved she doesn't really need to be protected, so she became the favourite. And it's good because a lot of the other family members are either still patronizing or just... Not great. If you ask her about it she'll tell you about it," He chuckled under his breath, "I punched one of her cousin's at her wedding reception when he leaned over to me and tried to make a joke about how she looked. We were all a little drunk at that point and his nose was bleeding all over the place but it wasn't broken I don't think. But that's also the kinda thing you can't do in front of a newborn. Those early experiences are important as hell. Luckily she doesn't understand what words mean yet, or else she'd be having really damaging stuff put into her head, but I know if that were major risk already Tarot'd already've done something about it."

"So, basically, no fighting in front of the Mini. Whatever needs to be said, we'll say far away from her," Xander said with a nod. He winced and stretched. "Those hospital floors are the worst, man. Absolute worst. Looking forward to not having to go hang out on them. Don't know how nurses do it."

"Oh yeah, you do not have to tell me that. But I bet she'll be home soon enough, 'cause she's eating well, so they know she'll put on weight like she's supposed to, and she only rarely forgets to breathe, and has been much better 'bout that, so all that's left is making sure her blood pressure stays good." He glanced at Xander, "Have you been there when it happens? It's real scary."

"I wouldn't call it exciting. I was holding her once, she went pale and cold and the machines were beeping like crazy." He shook his head, pulling into their driveway, "Hopefully today is the last day it happens."

Xander groaned and stretched. "I cannot wait for them to get home. There's a lot of problems still, but they'll be easier from home."

"I really don't want to go to school tomorrow," Alec sighed. He rubbed his eyes tiredly. "I know we should, but I just want to take a break."

Xander considered as he let them in and did the usual entry routine. "He'd probably call the school to excuse us, but that'd lead to a lot of questions. I guess we could always play hookey."

"Last time we did that, the school called him," Alec pointed out.

"It's weird having someone actually get called," Xander grumbled. "I still like the hookey idea."

"Me too, but we probably shouldn't."

Xander scratched Enkidue's ears. "I'm going to take a dog for a run. Will you get something out for dinner?"

Alec agreed, and the pair split ways briefly.

Daizi had fallen into a light, uneasy sleep on Dark's shoulder, but only for a little while, and she awoke startled, surprised she had slept at all. But she recognized almost immediately who was with her, and she squeezed herself in against him, and tried really very hard to pretend to be home.

Dark spoke a little bit about his experience picking up her family from the airport, and in response she nearly told him about what she had told to Alec, but decided against it, worried he'd snap at her too.

The next day, with Alec only minorly protesting, Xander forged the form excusing them from the second half of school. Normally, the school's office would call the parent in question, but Xander was banking on the fact that everyone at the school knew that Dark was busy with his wife and new daughter and wouldn't bother calling. Alec did not question how Xander had gotten so good at forging Dark's name. They turned it in at the front office, hoped for the best, and went to the first couple of classes, intending to leave before lunch. It seemed like a reasonable compromise to them. If the office called Dark, they'd deal with it then. Otherwise, they'd slip out without a fuss.

At school, there were definitely questions regarding the legitimacy of the note and there was a strong discussion regarding if they should call Dark to ask about it. The signature seemed mostly correct, but there was something about how the note was written that raised an eyebrow or two. Ultimately, one of the secretaries said she was going to call, and then went into the office and shut the door and waited for a little bit before coming out and saying it was a legitimate note.

That was not to say she believed in its accuracy: if she believed that, she would have called. But her son had been born prematurely, and she remembered those long sleepless nights spent worrying. Her other son was six, and lord knows his behavior backslid during that time, too. It didn't seem like it would help anyone if she followed up on it---she'd save that for if it continued, and made a little note to have their guidance counselor check in with them.

Some, but not all, of the family had come over to the hosptial anyway, so Dark and Daizi were occupied. Zeinab was at home with Neha, diligently preparing the proper Sebou dinner, while Fadia, Amira, and Saladin were with them, spending as much time as they could with their new relative before it was time for them to go home.

Xander and Alec slipped out with little drama. Alec was sweating bullets, certain that they were going to get the police called on them or something. Xander shrugged it off. Whether or not the office folk believed it, they were letting it go. Which meant they were free to go. It was a bit of a walk home, but they didn't mind, taking their time and enjoying the day. Fall was in the air, but the sun was still warm. They paused for cheap ice cream at a gas station and licked their way home. Xander put together lunch for them both, and they just enjoyed themselves. Nothing had really changed. Ivy, Dark, and Daizi were still in the hospital, they were still home alone fending for themselves, and they were going to have to deal with exotic family members, but leaving school early threw off the schedule and thus made things feel different even if it wasn't.

Around the time Cooger or Dark usually came to pick them up, Xander and Alec waited on the front porch. If it was Dark, they'd try to talk him into coming in and resting. If it was Cooger, they'd hop in and be ready to go.

Considering he had spent all morning dealing with his father-in-law, it was absolutely Dark who came to pick them up from school. When he got out of the car and saw them on the porch, he held up one hand in a wave and walked up the steps to greet them, "You two do not hate me also?" He asked, making a small joke at his situation in the hospital, "How was school?"

"School was the usual," Alec said, standing up.

Xander's eyes narrowed as he rose. "Why would we hate you? What did you do?

Alec smacked his shoulder. "Come in for a drink! And a nap. Or at least a rest. Do you want a snack?"

"If you were to ask my father-in-law, I sold state secrets to the USSR during the height of the Cold War, burned the library of Alexandria, and murdered JonBenét Ramsey," Dark replied cooly, "so I wanted to make sure there was not anything you two were holding me accountable for in addition to that. And we should probably head over," he turned to the car, and then squinted, "but I suppose there is nothing wrong with a drink first... You were late getting home from school, yes?"

"We actually got home a little early," Alec said truthfully and hoped Dark wouldn't ask how early. He opened the front door and held it open. "Come on. COme in to a nice safe space where no one is accusing you of being a time-traveling traitor."

"Nah, he doesn't think you're that bad," Xander said cheerfully, purposefully turning the subject to Dark's father-in-law even if he wasn't thrilled with talking about him. "You just kick puppies and spray cats with the water hose. That's all."
