How Green Becomes Wood

"I'll keep that in mind, then," Daizi hummed, thinking about it. After awhile she stretched and said, "Are you all ready to head back? I'm sure he's done with the first floor by now."

"I could stay out longer," Xander said with a grin. "It's nice out."

"I'm ready to head back," Alec countered. "Besides, we don't want anyone getting too cold, right?" He caught Xander's gaze and gave a pointed nod toward Ivy.

"I suppose we don't all have to stay out together. It is lovely out, and I'd probably keep waking, but the thought of her needing a diaper change when we've made it a mile away from home sounds miserable." Daizi said mildly, "But you're welcome to keep walking, I'm sure Enkidu would be grateful."

Xander considered but shook his head. "Nah, we'll walk back with you. We started together. We may as well end together."

"How inspiring," Alec teased.

Xander preteneded to chase him, and the twins ran off ahead of Daizi, dodging around playfully. Xander could have easily caught Alec, but he didn't try very hard. Besides, he had Enkidu and his leash to worry about.

Daizi strolled happily behind them, talking with Ivy all the while, who was happily watching her mother and cooing back at her with a grin on her face.

When she made it up to the door, she opened it up, and when she did and stepped inside, she froze, because the very first thing she heard was Dark, openly, singing out: tremulous and tender. Turn your face away from the garish light of day. Turn your thoughts away from cold, unfeeling light and with one hand she reached out to squeeze the arm of the nearest twin, to try to urge them to be quiet.

Unfortunately, she got Xander's arm. Fortunately, he had gotten used to touch enough to not instinctively smack the touch away immediately. He did scowl and look at her before realizing what he was hearing. He tipped his head, puzzled, and carefully pulled away from Daizi's hand. What was happening right now?

Alec crowded up on Daizi's other side, trying to see or hear what was happening. When he caught the words, he grinned and started whispering along as quietly as he could. Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams! Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before!

Daizi let her hand drop to her side, and she carefully stepped inside, doing her best to not make much noise. Ivy swiveled her head to try to attend to the sound, and the possibility of her cooing and alerting Dark to their presence worried her mother.

Alec she was not listening to, instead she touched the salt, did her best to slip off her shoes, and relaxed against the wall, just listening to her husband sing, a small blush spreading over her face.

Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar
And you'll live as you've never lived before.
Softly, deftly music shall caress you
Hear it, feel it secretly possess you

The twins followed Daizi, not sure why she was trying to be so quiet but following along. Xander caught Alec when he nearly fell over taking off his shoes, and the pair of them stood with Daizi. Alec hummed along very quietly, mouthing or whispering the words he knew. It seemed as though Dark knew the full song, but Alec only knew parts of it. He bobbed along quietly, and even Xander nodded a little. Dark had a good voice.

Daizi said nothing, choosing to instead only listen to her husband sing, feeling her heartbeat quicken as he hit the crescendo of the song, and considered risking speaking only to urge the twins to agree to that sleepover.

Dark was in the living room, singing as he mopped, with his headphones in, perfectly unaware anyone had come home. Then, as the song ended, and he finished the living room, skilled enough in cleaning that he hadn't boxed himself in, he headed to put the mop away, and doing so caught sight of his family against the wall, having clearly listened in, and froze.

Alec grinned and clapped excitedly. "Oh, that was so good! That was amazing!"

Xander refused to be wowed and instead lifted Enkidu's leash. "Can I let the dog loose, or should I take him back outside?"

The colour drained from Dark's face as he watched them, "I... did not realize you had come home." He blinked, "You can take him outside."

"You don't have to be embarrassed," Daizi murmured, a faint blush still in her face, "we only caught the very end."

Xander turned and took Enkidu back out front, leading him around to the backyard where they could play fetch.

Alec frowned quizzically. "Why are you embarrassed? That is a fantastic song, qnd I question anyone who doesn't sing along."

"I just... I didn't know you were... listening." He murmured, leaning slightly on the mop, and looking down at the clean floor.

"We didn't intend to be, and I didn't want to interrupt you midsong. You sing it really well," Daizi replied, "Ivy liked it."

"I'm sorry that we interrupted you," Alec apologized. "It was really good, and we enjoyed it, but we didn't mean to invade your privacy." He pointed toward the door. "I can get my shoes and go play with Enkidu with Xander." He started to move to do just that.

Daizi couldn't take it anymore and hugged Dark, being careful not to squish Ivy between the two of them, "You're so shy, Goose, we only listened because we liked it, you know how much I love hearing you sing!" She rocked up onto her toes and kissed his cheek.

Again Dark looked away, but he did relax a little. As Alec sought out his shoes, he asked softly, "You actually enjoyed it?"

Alec paused in his shoe search and nodded enthusiastically. "Oh yes! Your voice is fantastic, especially in this house. It just rolls along through the rooms like a... like a..." He hesitated, searching for the right descriptor. "Like a thundercloud of majestic notes gathering and falling like rain. Or something like that. Bottom line, yes, I enjoyed it. And that song suits your voice."

"I am sure that is an exaggeration..." Dark murmured, still embarrassed, and he took Ivy from Daizi so he could try to play it off.

Free of her daughter, Daizi took off the baby carrier and her coat, and walked into the kitchen, "I don't think he was. But that's alright. Alec, habibi, have you thought any more about having a sleepover with Peter?"

"Random segue," Alec said, shedding his coat and abandoning his shoes to follow Daizi. "I hadn't really, but I suppose it sounds like a good idea. A lot of fun. Maybe. I guess." He frowned, feeling slightly uncomfortable with the idea, but Xander had seemed interested in the past, and, really, it was just a party. A mini party. Why not? "When would this happen?"

"I just thought we shouldn't continue to praise my husband when he's already embarrassed," Daizi replied cooly, taking the electric kettle and filling it with water, "and I'm not sure. We'd have to discuss with with Peter and Sally, find what days work with them. A Friday or Saturday night, presumably. Probably a Saturday night..."

"We could go on a Saturday afternoon and hang out until evening time," Alec mused, following her. He fetched out the mugs and set them where Daizi usually lined them up. "Maybe then we'll actually get some sleep."
