How Green Becomes Wood

Laughing, Sloan packed up what was left of her lunch, "They let Freshman out slightly early during the first week so they get good at finding their classes, I bet he's already roaming the halls, probably trying to chat up some girl. He'll be easy to spot, but he's grown over the summer, so you have to look a little higher up."

Alec offered Sloan his crooked arm. Peter went around to her other side and did the same.

"Off to find the brother?" Alec grinned.

"I'm just going to follow you clowns back here," Xander said, still watching out for Sloan's brother.

Benny was found near the drinking fountains, taking the time he was meant to be finding his class chatting with other freshman, and trying to act like he wasn't a 14 year old boy with braces and was, in fact, a really cool, unbothered man. Sloan was wrong about one thing, though, he wasn't talking to girls, he was trying to impress two boys who had already seemed to have established themselves as the cook kids. "No cap, dude," Benny was saying, "I told Mr. G that he had some seriously negative aura, and I'd say it again, 'cause I'm not gonna let some Beta push me around, you know? Like if he's going to be hypocritical, I'm gonna call the dude out. Dude's out here acting like he's from Ohio."

"Benny!" Alec squealed when he spotted the kid. He darted forward and put his arm around him. "I didn't know you were an Alpha! How sweet! You've really grown up, haven't you?"

"He looks ready to man a bardie all by himself," Peter pretended to sniff. "Such a beautiful kid he is."

Benny made a face and slid out from Alec's grasp--Sloan was right, he had gotten taller. In fact, he was taller than her, now--"Dude, why you acting so sus? You're literally just my neighbor."

"Aww, Benny, we just wanted to wish my baby brother a great first day of school! My little guy," she pronounced it goy, "is all grown up!"

"I'm acting sus?" Alec grinned. "I can't wait to remind you of what you were just saying in about three years."

"It is a treasure and delight to see one such as you advancing into the later years of high school!" Peter said happily, forced to look up to Benny. "Ah, how the young age to make the rest of us feel so old!"

Xander, hands in pockets, wandered over to watch, clearly a part of the group but still standing back. He glanced at the two "cool dudes" and promptly ignored them. Freshmen. He had been over freshmen since he was a freshman.

"Yeah dude, you're ancient." Benny said dryly, while Sloan pinched his cheek.

In his ear, she whispered, "Shouldn't have ignored me earlier, dip****." Then, stepping back, she said, playing it up, "Alright, bubbelah, go on and keep talking with your little friends! You'll have to invite them over for a little sleepover. Hey, remember when you were eight and at your birthday sleepover you--"

Benny shoved Sloan's face away with one hand, which she accepted as a sure enough sign to cut her story short, "I will see you at home."

"Okay, and I'm driving you home, remember? Let me know if you need help finding the parking lot!"

"Remember, you lot," Peter grinned, "if any of you have any questions, you can come to us! Especially you, Benny. Any brother of a friend!"

"Happy studying!" Alec waved happily before letting them escape. "Remember: you are loved!"

Benny rolled his eyes and turned away to hide his embarrassment while Sloan walked away laughing, feeling extremely satisfied with that. The two boys Benny had been talking to looked after the group for a little while, bewildered, before finally one said, "Dude, your sister's hot af." to which the other one agreed, "Yeah, like, I'd rizz her up."

"That's gross," Benny recoiled, "First of all, you couldn't if you tried, but also, that's my sister."

"
Yeah? And she's a baddie."

Xander caught enough of the conversation to know what the boys were talking about, and he shot them a warning look before going to walk with Sloan. If he was the touching type, he would have put his arm around her or held her hand. Since he couldn't, he settled for walking close to her. She had enough problems already, she didn't need deluded children sniffing at her heels, too.

"That was a lot of fun," Alec admitted quietly to Sloan. "Am I mean to think that?"

"No, that was great," Peter snickered.

"No, it's not mean. The kid deserves to be embarrassed, it's a rite of passage, and my job as his older sister, I think." She took a quick glance behind her, "It is actually kinda cool being back in school with him. For all the **** I give him, he is a pretty good kid."

"Other than ignoring his sister," Alec teased. "At least now he knows better! I can't imagine ignoring my sister."

"You'll never be in the same school as her, and she'd never let you," Xander said dryly.

"You never know. We could end up going to a trade school or something together," Alec sniffed.

"You may not ignore her, but you'll have to wait and find out if she ignores you," Sloan said with a little grin, "She's the youngest, she may decide you're both incredibly embarrassing."

"You don't embarrass me, but I am not your sister who is fifteen years younger," Sloan replied, "You hear how Benny speaks, imagine what slang a fifteen year old will use fifteen years from now."

"Oh, man," Alec said soberly. "I forget just how far apart we are sometimes. Will I even be able to understand her?"

"Don't worry," Peter said, patting his shoulder. "You'll always have Arabic to fall back on!"

"Until she starts speaking Arabic slang," Sloan winked, "Jokes aside, though, I don't think you really need to worry, you'll have context clues on your side, I mean, we understand our parents."

"Have I not always had that role?" Sloan asked as if she was surprised, "I'm the oldest, I'm SC, I have a younger sibling, once I'm eighteen I'm going to start coaching the littles, and I'm the eldest daughter in a strict family, so, I'm basically made for it."
