How Green Becomes Wood

"Every trope needs some moderation to keep it fresh," Milo replied, "Those movies typically involve wearing the opposite twin's clothes to switch places for some sort of hijinks or to evade some sort of hijinks, and somehow, I do not anticipate that, either."

"We swapped places a few times after seeing one of those," Xander said. "I think it was... something trap."

"Parent Trap," Alec supplied.

"Right. Yeah, nobody ever caught on... or actually cared. It was pretty underwhelming, so we gave up." He paused and mused, "Except for the hair, we could get better results now."

"Better results at school or at home?" Milo asked, looking up at Xander, "because your mom is blind and I'm pretty sure your dad sees into people. But you have all the same classes at school."

"Well," He turned his head to the side, considering things, "I guess, since you're in all the same classes, you're able to test if you can do it without risking detention for skipping class. So it's the safest time to try it. I guess the real question is if you can convincingly act like each other."

"And as soon as you're ready to come to school in colorful eyeliner and rainbow glitter," Milo pointed out to Xander, struggling to imagine his friend actually being able to commit to that for a full day.

"Nobody can except our Ba when he tells him to tone it down," Xander sighed. He gestured to Alec - who was not wearing rainbow glitter this morning but was still in colorful clothing and light makeup - and said, "Believe it or not, but this is toned down."

"That's probably for the best, I guess, because I suppose people should be allowed to dress how they want and not be criticized for it," Milo replied, resting his cheek on his hand, "I don't really care how people choose to dress as long as their genitals are covered."

"I sometimes wish there were fashion police," Xander grumbled.

"What would you do if they favored me over you?" Alec grinned, but the teacher called the class to order before Xander could retort.

Class went by smoothly, and while Xander got called on once to answer a question, the teacher left Milo alone. Soon, it was over, and it was time to head to the next class. This one went equally smoothly, and Alec was called on to answer a question once, and so was Austin. Austin turned red and managed to stammer out the wrong answer. The teacher didn't dwell on it and moved along quickly.

On the rare occasion in class when Milo was called on, he didn't like it, but was able to mostly handle it. It wasn't something that he loved, but as long as it only happened once and he could answer quickly, he could manage. Barely.

But luckily, the first half of the day was easier than the rest of the week had been, it was Friday, and he was about to have two days of utter solitude. It was doable, the end was in sight. His English class was always a little bit of a bright spot, and soon enough, it was lunch.

It was finally lunchtime, and the twins took their usual seat. Peter was already there, and he gave them a cheerful wave with his waterbottle.

"Today has been a success so far," Alec said happily, more than relieved. He'd managed to go half the day without stuffing his foot into his mouth with Milo. They'd even had a reasonable conversation! It was great! And before that, he'd talked to Claire without being stupid, too.

"Yeah," not bad," Xander agreed, though he was thinking about school, not relationships.

Sloan arrived to the table not long after them, with the same Scooby-Doo lunchbox she always wore, but she had on a pair of new doc martens, patterned with what looked like watercolour koi fish, and a yellow sweater worn under a denim pinafore dress. The front pockets of the dress had iron-on patches she had added herself of dinosaur skeletons and flowers. It was absolutely, undeniably, an outfit her mom would detest.

She came and sat down, flipping her hair, which she had worn loose and woke up absurdly early to make sure looked nice, and said, after greeting everyone, "Thanks for decorating my locker. It looks awesome."

"You look really nice today, Sloan! Did you do your hair different? Oh, and, you're welcome! But we had help," Alec grinned.

"I got here late and had nothing to do with it," Peter said sheepishly. "But you do look nice. New dress?"

Xander looked up and glanced Sloan up and down, not having noticed. "Pretty stylish." Then he went back to his food.

"Oh, I know, Claire told me all about it, and even if she didn't, I knew there was no way you had access to some of those pictures," She replied cheerfully, "The dress is... sort of new. I thrifted it awhile ago and added the patches myself. The shoes are new, though. My mom hates them, but my brother conspired with some of my cousins."

"I like the skeletons and flowers, but why dinosaurs? I didn't think you were into dinosaurs," Alec said, looking at the patches. "I really like your shoes."

"Yeah, they are awesome!" Peter agreed.
