How Green Becomes Wood

"I am glad you enjoy working there," Dark told him, looking at the movie playing on the screen, "I find I talk about Daizi often when I work there. Being around flowers like that, it makes me think of her." He didn't say it, but he knew if Daizi weren't alive, he wouldn't be able to spend time in a place like that.

"Really? I find myself talking about colors most when I'm there," Alec mused lightly. "I'm sure Mama will appreciate that."

Xander wandered in about halfway through the movie and looked at the screen. "What did you pick?"

"She is always on my mind," Dark replied simply, a little smile pulling at his lips, "We are watching Little Miss Sunshine. It is quite good. It has the... actor..." He frowned at the screen, trying to remember the name of the man, "He was in the--sitcom. The boss of it."

"I like the little girl, and the emo kid is totally you," Alec told Xander.

"That doesn't narrow it down since I don't watch sitcoms," Xander told Dark as he flopped into a chair. "That's an old movie."

"You would know this one," Dark replied, pleased to see Xander joined them, "Everybody knows it, it is the famous one." He pointed at the screen when the camera panned to Steve Carrell, "Him, he was the boss on the show." He sat back, lifting one of the throw pillows to hold in his lap, "It is an old movie, but I am an old man."

"Oh, him," Xander said, recognizing the face but still not knowing the show. "Looks like he's having the time of his life... or not."

"I don't think any of them are," Alec agreed.

"A dark comedy is still a comedy," Dark replied, holding up one finger, "I think I deserve credit for that. And, it is not the first comedy I have chosen. The Grand Budapest Hotel is also a comedy."

"What's that?" Xander asked with a feown, not having heard of the movie.

Then both twins went still and silent at the iconic scene where the teen boy learns he cannot be a pilot. Alec instinctively gripped Dark's arm during the rant. It would have been Xander's arm had things been different. Xander's expression darkened as he watched.

"We watched it together last year," He replied, looking quickly over at him, "It is the one where the hotel employee goes to prison and is broken out using a knife hidden in an overly fancy dessert."

When Alec grabbed his arm, Dark pulled him in tight to his side, without looking away from the screen.

Xander nodded, remembering the movie, though he'd forgotten the name. Then he was quiet, watching the meltdown.

After Olive had sat with her brother, calming his rage and grief just a little, and then the family worked to get back on the road again, Xander stood up. "You comedy blows," he stated and walked away, heading up to his room. Dwayne was too much like himself... and like Milo. Especially that breakdown. That was... it was too close to home. The rest of it, the raw anger and the desire to be stronger, that was too much like himself. At least he didn't have Friedrich Nietzsche as his hero. But that moment with Olive. He remembered times when that was him and Alec. He didn't want to think about that right now.

"I guess comedy isn't all about the funny," Alec said softly, as if that hadn't been obvious throughout the majority of the movie.

It took a while before Alec let go of Dark's arm. Then, when Olive started her routine, he smiled, bobbing along, though he was worried, just like Dwayne, about how she'd be treated. She was such an adorable girl! Then the dance started. Alec blanched and covered his eyes. "Grandpa!" he squawked in shock and dismay and just a hint of laughter. The grandfather had taught Olive a stripper dance! Then the family joined Olive on the stage, and Alec clapped along happily until it ended and only one audience member clapped and shouted encouragement.

Dark nearly laughed both at the scene and at Alec's reaction, and stayed holding onto him until the movie ended. It was just nice to spend time with his child.

After the movie ended, he checked the time and stretched deeply, popping his back, "We need to wash our faces."

"If you put it that way, it sounds almost familiar." Dark joked, heading into his en suite, "but I would never let Ivy do a child beauty pagent. Even before the dancing at the end, putting babies in makeup and bathing suits to be looked at. She is absolutely not allowed. And if someone taught her to dance like that, as a child, I would flay them."

Dark bent down to wash his face, glad to be at a counter built for his height, and after washing it, stood to the side of the large mirror so he could get the rest of his skincare routine completed while he was here, "If she went against our wishes and competed, she'd win but it would not be worth it."

While Alec washed his face, Dark used a toner, two serums, and a retinol. Then, as Alec dried his face, he applied a night cream before picking up a face oil, knowing all the while he should've brushed his teeth before doing all of this, but he wanted to have a glass of wine, since he was going to be up late waiting for Daizi anyway, "You also are not allowed to do pagents."

"Aw, but I was so looking forward to it," Alec moaned teasingly. He couldn't resist touching his jawline, loving how the mask made his skin feel. He, too, had a skin care routine thanks to Dark's help, but all of his stuff was in the other bathroom where the sink was a bit lower and easier for a normal-heightened teen to be able to reach. It was a privilege to use Dark's bathroom! "I should go finish pampering my skin. Then I'll come back. But the movie was fantastic! It'll be a while before I'm up to watching it again, and maybe I'd skip a couple of, uh, scenes."
