How Green Becomes Wood

"Of course you both are going to be there," Daizi laughed, reaching out and squeezing Alec's hands, "How could we not include you? We just don't know what the shape of it is, yet."

"Maybe we will force you to give speeches," Dark teased, smirking into his coffeeshop.

"We'll probably have to look into that," Daizi agreed reluctantly, "I'd really like to renew our vows in our garden, right in front of our rose bushes, but even if we were a smaller family, I think it'd be too cold in November."

"Probably," Dark agreed, "Maybe we could take cuttings of them and add them to whatever alter we come up with."

"I can totally do a speech!" Alec cheered while Xander gave Dark a dirty look.

"Rose cuttings at the alter is a good idea," Xander said to Dark and buried himself in his breakfast. Too much was happening before food! Unacceptable.

"I think cuttings is a very good idea," Alec agreed.

"I think it'd be really lovely if you did," Daizi smiled, reaching over and taking Ivy into her lap, "I'd ask you to give a speech, sweet girl, but I don't know if you'll be saying words yet!"

Dark finished his breakfast up and then brought his and Daizi's finished plates to the sink. As he rinsed them off, something came to his mind, and he asked, "When the adoption goes through, would you like to do anything?"

The twins paused. In all the excitement surrounding Daizi and her proposal, they'd forgotten how soon the adoption finalization was.

"Yes," Alec said firmly.

Xander hesitated, but then shrugged and nodded. "Yeah, we should do something."

"A party of our own?" Alec suggested hopefully, looking at Xander rather than Dark.

"Nothing too extreme," Xander cautioned.

Alec was counting on his fingers. "You, you, me, Xander, Sloan, Milo maybe, Peter, Peter's parents, Becky, Cooger, Tom, Aunt Ciara... Tristan? That's fourteen. Am I missing anyone?"

"That is all I would invite," Dark replied, taking mild surprise at Alec considering to invite Milo. It was nice to know they had decided to try to stay friends, but he somehow expected it wouldn't make the list.

Daizi chuckled to herself, "I do think you're forgetting someone, yes. Although maybe they don't count for the list you're making."

Xander didn't think Milo would make the end list either. In part because a party was not something Milo would enjoy (though he'd probably come if he knew it was important) and in part because all of that was just a bit too raw still. It might be better to maintain some distance for a little longer. Still, he appreciated Alec thinking of Milo. He said, "You forgot Ivy."

"Hmm, so I did!" Alec said. He frowned at himself. "How could I do that? Shame on me! Ivy! You're counted, too!"

"How could you forget her?" Daizi replied, pouting playfully and squeezing Ivy in a hug, "She's such a sweet baby girl."

"Yes, she is," Dark replied, coming back to the table for a moment, ruffling Ivy's black hair, which was getting fairly long, for someone her age. Ivy only babbled, reaching out at the table for objects which caught her attention. Then, stretching, Dark said, "Now that it is September, I need to start getting the Halloween decorations out of storage. I am a day late, but glad to be."

The twins glanced at each other. Alec fiddled with his spoon before cautiously asking, "What is the theme for this year's family costumes?"

"Please don't be horror movies," Xander sighed.

Dark was just about to leave to go to the basement and start getting the bins, but the question made him stop and turned around, absolutely stunned the twins were interested in being part of the costume. Daizi, meanwhile, broke into the biggest conceivable grin, "We had been talking about doing Beetlejuice," she said excitedly, "I'd be Lydia, and Dark would be Beetlejuice, and we'd dress Ivy as a Sandworm, you two can be--" She paused, struggling with that. There weren't many notable costumes from the movie, and now she didn't know what to say. Neither she nor Dark thought they'd be interested!

"I'm surprised you two aren't going to be, um, can't remember their names. The ghosts," Alec remarked.

"Barb and Al?" Xander tried to remember. "Yeah, two ghosts joined together forever in love and spooky stuff. I thought for sure that'd be what you two were."

"We could be some of those random creatures in the waiting room. Or one of us could crossdress as the weird mother person! Or stepmom or whatever," Alec grinned.

"Not it," Xander said firmly.

"Well, we could be, but then Dark doesn't get to wear a black-and-white vertically stripped suit and temporarily dye his hair and beard green," Daizi pointed out, pointing towards her husband.

"Why would I choose a flannel shirt and glasses over that?" Dark asked, truly excited to get his hands on that suit, "It is Barbara and Adam, by the way. You are welcome to be Adam."

Xander pointed at Dark. "You as Beetlejuice? The maniacal maniac who jumps around, makes bizarre faces, and is overall an evil energizer bunny? I think the short guy over here is a better choice for that, especially if you give him some of your coffee beforehand."

"The suit would look good, even if it will make you look a thousand feet tall," Alec said cheerfully. "But I wouldn't mind going as that weird stepmother. No way am I being Barbara or Adam because then Xander would have to be the other, and that's just weird."

"Isn't the point of a costume to disguise yourself? What is a better disguise for him?" Daizi chuckle.

Dark took the critique in stride, and with a casual stride of his shoulders said, "Yes, but I will look good in the costume, and that is enough."

"It's worth it for the picture," Daizi assured them, "We have a scrapbook with all of our costumes dating back from before we got married, although we missed last year. But that's okay, it was worth it."

Xander snickered as he stood and finished clearing away his spot at the table. "Shame. You could have been Samwise and that lady hobbit, and the mini could have been a potato."

"She'd make such a cute potato!" Alec laughed as he stood to help. "Hey, did you finish that history homework we had?"

"Nah, I left that one for last," Xander said, and the pair got off on a tangent about homework order.

"I think we're the two worst people to dress as hobbits," Daizi laughed, admittedly a bit disappointment they didn't inquire about this scrapbook, "It'd be better if you two went as Sam and Frodo or Merry and Pippin."

Dark shook his head and then went downstairs to start bringing up the Halloween bins. There was decorating to be done.

The twins went to their room, leaving the door open when they did, and finished up the homework they'd put off or left to the last day. None of it was difficult, so they had no problem finishing it in a reasonable amount of time. It also gave them just a bit of a break from Halloween discussions. Things had gotten a little more intense than they wanted to admit to their parents, so a bit of a cool-off time helped.

sometime later, Xander wandered down first and went to see if he could help Dark with the decorations.

Alec went to find Daizi to inquire about the album of Halloween. He knew she'd wanted him to ask, and now that he'd had his break (not that homework was much of a break), he was ready to see it and respond accordingly.
