How Green Becomes Wood

"That is true," Dark agreed, "but I cannot help the amount of sugar people add to things."

Daizi cracked a little smirk: she had a particularly sappy comment she could make to that, but refrained. Her face expressed it well enough anyway.

"I think you'd be happy with absolutely no sugar whatsoever outside of maybe fruit," Xander pointed out between slurps. "And, Mama, I see that look. I don't want to interpret that look, but I see it."

"I like fruit, especially pomegranate or passion fruit," These were both tart, "Fruit can stay."

"I didn't say anything," Daizi said slyly, feigning innocence, "It's just, you know, he doesn't hate everything sweet. You do always accuse him of being sappy, after all. Sap is sweet."

Xander slurped and sucked as hard as he could on his milkshake to make it as annoying as possible. "Can't hear you over the deliciousness! I don't care that it's my fault we got here, I can't hear you!"

Daizi giggled and said in an intentionally overly sweet voice, "I just love him so so much, you don't understand," she turned to Dark and rubbed her cheek against his, making him roll his eyes, since he knew it was just a joke for her, "My Goose is the other half of my souuuuuul."

"Oh, you are going to steal my car?" Dark asked, raising an eyebrow, while Daizi continued to make kissy faces. She couldn't drive, she was more than willing to play this game of chicken with Xander.

"I think Daizi and I have different intentions." Dark replied, taking another relaxed sip of too-sweet milkshake.

"He said sap needs to be distilled," Daizi said, wrapping her arms around his neck, "I'm distilling it."

Xander smirked, saluted Dark, and told him, "Good luck!" He walked out the door and went to the car. He got in the driver's side but didn't start the car. If those two didn't stop their PDA soon and come out, he'd take a careful drive around the block. It wouldn't take long, but it might freak them out just a little.

"He is actually leaving," Dark replied blandly.

"No he's not," Daizi replied, sitting back now that Xander wasn't there to watch them, "He's just testing us, just like I'm testing him."

Xander checked the time. Two minutes. Three. Okay, three minutes was long enough. He started the car, triple-checked everything, and backed out of the parking lot. He drove away in the direction of home but then turned to take a trip around the block. Then he parked out of immediate sight of the windows or the door. Then he waited.

"He drove away," Dark replied, now finding this joke less funny, and he shifted to look out the window better. He knew, he trusted, Xander wouldn't actually leave them, but he certainly was committed.

Daizi just dropped her arm, "If he actually did leave, I think it means I won?"

Xander leaned back and scrolled through his phone, keeping an eye on the door as he did so. He was quite comfortable and ready to wait for as long as it took. This was kind of hilarious.

After a few moments, Dark paid the bill and then went outside the front of the restaurant, bringing Daizi with him, very near to calling Xander, while Daizi just laughed and joked about calling the cops.

Xander saw them come out of the restaurant and watched them for a bit. Then he started the car and drove it around to stop right in front of them. Rolling down the window, he leaned out and called, "Hey. Would you two like a ride?"

Xander snorted. "Not my first foray, but I just went around the block waiting until you were done with your foray into massive PDA. How many kids had their eyes covered by their parents?"
