How Green Becomes Wood

"I felt as though..." Dark began, attempting to find the words to express his opinion, "Although they were certainly talented performers, it was difficult to figure out how best to enjoy them, because they would switch from singer-songwriter to hard rock without warning or anything in between to soften the transition, so it was difficult to really get into it."

"It's like if you put all the songs on your phone on shuffle," Daizi explained, "and it made it difficult to dance to, because you couldn't really get into a groove."

"Is singer-songwriter a genre? Or style?" Alec asked with a frown, having never heard the phrase used like that before. "But you did still dance to one!"

"They danced to two," Xander told.him.

"I'll bet it was absolutely fantastic," Alec smiled. He glanced at his brother, proud of him.

Xander blushed just a little and asked, "So, what did you guys do?"

"I did my homework and chores before having a bit of self-care time," Alec said. He glanced toward Cooger, letting him answer next.

Cooger shrugged, "Just hanging out with Ivy. Pretty fun little kid, her. I tried to get her to tell me what she wants for her birthday, but she didn't tell me. Glad I don't got her all the time, though."

"Is it weird I'm glad he can't?" Daizi asked with a little laugh, "If somehow he understood her but I didn't, I'd be crushed. I keep waiting for her first word, even though I know it won't be for awhile yet."

"I remember coming across some really old comic from, like, a hundred years ago that had some guy who could understand babies. His only job was babysitting this one kid. There was more to it, but that's all I remember. It was black and white and very sharp," Alec remarked.

"I've literally never heard of that before, kid," Cooger chuckled, "and don't worry, T. I've been working hard to teach her a first word that'll embarrass the hell outta ya. You've got that to look forward too."

Dark looked towards his wife, who was cheerfully snuggling with her baby, and was about to beg Cooger not to do this, but before he could, Daizi said, "At least she'll be talking!"

"And she'll probably be swearing in Arabic, which means most other parents won't know to judge us," Daizi laughed, lifting Ivy up above her head.

"Parents always want their kids to talk talkin', till suddenly they've been asked 'why' twenty hundred darn times in a row," Cooger pointed out with a chuckle.

"You'll get your chance," Cooger replied, stretching, "I better be getting home. Don't want it to be too dark when I get there, that's when the animals start coming out."

"I will walk you out," Dark answered, standing and going with him to the door.

"Bye! It was nice hanging out!" Alec called, waving. "You are an excellent uncle to tiny people."

Xander snorted but also gave him a wave. "See you next time you gat called upon to paint a house."

"And I hope you have fun on it, I'll be sure to get here before you head out," Cooger replied, and with a wave, headed back to his truck.

Dark waited long enough to see him off, then returned to the living room to relax.

"I'm glad you guys had a good day out," Alec said. "That means our day out is also going to be super special!"

"You doubted?" Xander asked.

Alec shrugged. "It was a possibility that it'd go wrong."

"If it had gone poorly, we would have scheduled a second one so you could have one you did enjoy," Dark assured them, "but I am glad it was enjoyable for you."

"Even though you did enjoy it, I still want to do something like it again," Daizi added, handing Ivy to Dark so he could have a turn with her.
