How Green Becomes Wood

"I love you," Daizi told him as the server came up, and then sat back in her seat, making herself smile and not further confuse this poor server who had already stumbled upon the most visually confusing family in existence. While she ordered dessert willingly, Dark only asked for a cappuccino.

"I really enjoyed doing pottery," Alec remarked as they waited for dessert to be served. "A part of me wants to take it up as a new hobby, but I know it's just the newness of it all. It does feel amazing! Maybe I'll have to make a point to, I don't know, once a month or every two months do one of those 'make your own plate or cup' or something like that."

"Another new hobby," Daizi chuckled, making a conscious choice not to be sad anymore, "Habibi, you're going to run out of space! And time!"

"I am sure once a month, or every few months is doable," Dark said, "but if you spread yourself too thin, you will not be able to improve your skills."

"I know, but I also know I won't stick with this one. Not long-term, so why invest in the time to improve skills that I won't want to use?" Alec asked with a little smile. "I'd rather just enjoy it as it is, looking like some kind of elementary school project than try to get better and focus on improvement for improvement's sake."

"I think I like clay better because it is more forgiving, but I think wood is superior for making the more detailed work and the pieces of art that you do," Alec mused. "Although, speaking of having time for lots of hobbies, Cyr wheel lessons are being dropped to only once a week. That opens up a whole evening!"

"I definitely would not be able to make things move like I do if I worked from clay," Dark agreed with a nod, "and a kiln at home would take up much more space."

"Is it really?" Daizi asked brightly, "That's exciting! It will be nice having you home more often!"

Alec nodded happily as their desserts were dropped off. "Yep! Only once a week, giving me a lot more time at home and maybe even time for friends and..." He blushed, thinking that would be the perfect time to maybe take someone on a date. He still could after most of his activities, but it was nice to have more breathing room.

Alec relented and gave his mother some details. "Her name is Emma. We did our science project together, and she comes to a lot of our gigs at the pizza parlor when she can. She's really nice, and very awkward, too, but tries hard. Grades mean a lot to her, and so do pelicans."

"She sounds lovely," Daizi said, "I'm happy for you. And it's sweet she goes to see you perform."

"Is she the one who gave you advice about what colours you wear?" Dark asked, "The one who said you should not wear purple?"

It did worry him, somewhat, that fact about her, but he reminded himself he did not have all of the context. Her comment about what colours he should wear could be entirely innocuous. "I hope if you do take her on a date, you have a lovely time."

"Speaking of the pizza parlor, actually," Daizi said, folding her hands together, "How is your band? Xander was telling us about it."

"Me too," Alec said brightly. He glanced at Daizi at her question and hesitated to answer. "Well, um, it's going well!" He hesitated again before admitting, "Actually, no, I don't think it is. It's on shaky ground right now."

"Not great," Alec sighed heavily. "I mean, I do understand his reasons. We talked about it, and I get it, but I will miss him. I really, really liked performing with him, but apparently that enjoyment was mostly one-sided."
