How Green Becomes Wood

Dark looked at Alec confused, "It is your hair. You can do as you like to it, I am not going to dictate how you colour it, at least not now that you are sixteen."

Daizi nodded in agreement, "Your hair was blue last time, right?"

"But it's your big day!" Alec protested. "And there's plenty of advanced notice. I think it's only fair if you have an opinion about things like that as long as you aren't bridezilla-type, which you don't strike me as being. Yes! It was blue, and is still kind of a little bit blue. I want to recolor the ends black!"

"Habibi, I can't even see your hair! How could I get upset about which colour you choose? But I think we'll probably reuse our original wedding colours, which were midnight blue, deep violet, deep red, and forest green, with gold accents, if you're really worried."

Dark raised an eyebrow, "Black, really? What made you want to choose black?"

"That's a lot of colors, but black should fit right in, I think. Or I could go forest green," Alec mused. To answer Dark's question, he said, "I think it'll look good with red hair, and I thought it would fit in with Haloween a bit."

"The number of colours worked, you should look at the pictures sometime," Dark replied.

"It's so sweet you want to be ready for Halloween! It makes me wish when I would dye my hair fun colours."

"I bet they do, they sound like they would," Alec nodded. "Mama, your hair is already a really fun color, especially for Halloween. It goes so well with your witchiness!"

That last bit earned him an odd look from the server who'd come to clear away the dishes and offer them the check. Alec blushed and gave her an awkward smile.

"Is it really?" She asked, touching a strand of it, "Surely, red is too, then?"

"There may be pictures at the adoption finalization, do you want to have black in your hair for that, or wait to get it redone until after?" Dark asked, not minding either way, but knowing it would affect when the appointment was scheduled for.

Alec paused. He hadn't considered that. "Red is a pretty good Halloween color, too," he said slowly as he considered when to dye his hair. "I think it might be a good idea to get a haircut and remove the color in it right now and look good for the official, governmental pictures, and then get it dyed after that."

"We will book two appointments, then," Dark promised, knowing how important hair was, "I need to get mine cut, too."

"If you cut it short again, so help me gods, I'll divorce you," Daizi said, almost entirely joking--but not entirely.

"I have no plans to cut it short again," He promised, raising one hand, "It has just grown out a bit too much, it is affecting my curl pattern."

"You can thank your sister, if she had not decided to interrupt my ability to get my hair cut last year, I would not have decided to grow it out again." Dark replied.

"And now it is just over two weeks before her first birthday," Daizi said, stretching, "We were talking about doing a 'Oh the Places You'll Go' theme, it seems a little bit less cheesy than other themes, and a bit more fun that just decorating for 'girl.' We don't want it to not feel like it's for a baby." Daizi said, knowing just how much there was to plan in such a short timeframe.

"I think it's really more about us than anything," Daizi admitted shyly, "It's just so exciting, we didn't know we'd ever make it this far. So much of my family is visiting, we have a larger guest list for it than we have for our vow renewal."

"You are welcome to help plan," Dark told Alec, "We have never planned a party for one so little, and she does not know other babies, so beyond the theme, food, and cake, we are not sure what to do, exactly. But we are going to put up a sign with pictures from every month."

"That sounds like it is going to be so much fun! Even if it is mostly for adults," Alec grinned. "I love the picture idea, and Ivy should have her own cake of some kind, even if it's not a real cake, and maybe you could put up some kind of board about all the things going on when she was born. Like a snapshot of the world! And music, but most importantly, a small timer." He waited to see if they'd ask what the timer was for.

"I think we were planning to just cut her a tiny piece of her normal birthday cake," Daizi said, turning her head slightly, "It is the first time she'll get to have added sugar, but we don't want her to have too much."

"Why a timer?" Dark asked, "and why is it the most important part?"

Daizi laughed, "That's a good point, but she'll also need the timer so we know when she gets time to herself, we don't want her to get overwhelmed at her own party!"

"Amty Zeinab wants to stay here, but we do not have a bed for her," Dark mused, "I would not mind if she did, but then Saladin would demand to stay here, too."

"Well, he is my father," Daizi said gently, "and paid for most of the house. I think it'd be sweet if he wanted to be close."
