How Green Becomes Wood

"Alec was using Ivy as part of his exercise regime, now Ivy is back to exploring," Dark explained, sitting back.

Of course, whenever Xander entered, there were no other options but for Ivy to crawl over to him.

When Xander crouched down, she sat up to look at him, babbling in a way that sounded intentional, even though she did not say any words.

"I think she's judging your cleaning, Goose," Daizi said.

"I think she is complaining she cannot find a dust bunny to play with," He argued.

Alec laughed and rolled himself up to sit crosslegged. "I think she's telling him about her flying lessons."

"Flying lessons? Did you go flying today, Mini?" Xander asked, raising his brow at her. "That sounds like a lot of fun."

"Ah!" Ivy said before putting her hand into her mouth, watching her brother.

Although she'd prefer not to, Daizi pried herself away from Dark and stood, needing to check her soup, "It sounded like a lot of fun. I miss being able to play like that."

"You know your timelines better than for any of us to catch you doing anything," Alec retorted. "And besides: you'd probably do it outside where there's more space and less chance of breaking anything."

Xander stood up. "Come on, Mini. Time for dinner," he told her, beckoning for her to follow him.

Alec stood up as well and came to walk behind Ivy. If she wanted to, he'd help her stand and walk, but he was curious if she'd follow Xander.

When Xander walked away, Ivy first started crawling after him, but then stopped looking up at her other brother, noticing him watching her. Then she sat back again and watched him curiously.

Xander paused and looked back at Ivy. "Come on, Mini," he coaxed.

Alec smiled and moved to walk next to her. "Time for food! Come on, Ivy!" He gestured for her to come, shuffling forward a bit.

With a little bit of coaxing, Ivy did crawl after her brothers towards the dining room, and Dark followed quietly behind them, simply pleased.

"Ivy!" Daizi called from the living room, crouching as she heard the jingles, "Have you come all this way? What a clever baby girl!"

"Oh my goodness!" Daizi cheered, scooping Ivy into her arms and giving her kisses, "You're getting so good at crawling, aren't you?"

"She is," Dark agreed, ruffling Ivy's hair before getting her baby food.

"It's not a very good day to be a baby girl named Ivy-Qadira though," Daizi said sadly as she set Ivy in her high chair, "Because the only time she's had a cold was before she was on solids. Do you remember how awful that was? And I'm glad she's so rarely been ill, but it means she's not allowed to have this soup with us. You have to be sick the first time."

"I can't believe you made this again," Alec said, inhaling the aroma deeply. "Just the smell!"

Xander slid into his seat and glanced at Ivy. "It's a weird thing to hope someone gets sick so they can have the best soup ever."

"It seemed like you needed it. Maybe we all did," Daizi replied, running her thumb along the rim of her bowl. "And I just feel bad Ivy is being left out."

"It is better than her being ill," Dark said, sitting down and setting Ivy's dinner down for her, "Especially so soon before her birthday. Right, tifla? You only have eleven days to wait."

"She doesn't know what she is missing, meaning I bet she's fully satisfied to not have it," Xander pointed out.

Alec picked up his spoon and just looked at the soup for a long minute, just smelling and savoring the moment. Then he took a spoonful and closed his eyes.

Xander did not hesitate. He dug right in. And like Alec, he closed his eyes and allowed the flavors to caress his tongue. So good! It was like.. like a hug. A deep, warm hug where he didn't have to think about touch. Nothing about touch was involved in this. Just the surrounding warmth. A tiny whimper escaped as he thought about it.
