How Green Becomes Wood

"He may as well make the most of it." Daizi replied, hiding her grin in her cup of tea.

When Alec returned, before Dark even had a chance to see his makeup, Ivy squealed in such delight the pitch neared on painful. To her, who had seen so little of the world, the amount of sparkles were maybe the most amazing thing she had ever seen.

"She likes it," Dark mused, nearly chuckling at how exuberant Ivy was, "You may find it difficult to leave the house."

Xander winced and rubbed his ear. "Mini, I know you're our biggest fan. You needn't tell us that loudly. We heard you the first time," he told her mildly, not particularly upset.

Alec laughed. "You have good taste, Ivy! Very good. But I have to go so I can get yesterday's and tomorrow's homeworks turned in!" Then he turned to his father for approval before sitting for breakfast.

"The eyeshadow looks good," Dark confirmed with a nod before sitting down with his coffee, "My darling Ivy-Qadira, what have we talked about with your polite voice? You cannot just scream."

"I don't think she believes you," Daizi said, "but she is only nine days away from her birthday, she's excited about life."

Alec considered this statement. "Life is pretty exciting." He paused and nodded. "Yes, life is exciting!" He ate quickly, humming to himself a bit as he did so.

As they were getting ready to leave, Xander remembered, "Oh, we're going to be a little late getting home. We both have hair appointments after school. Just freshening things up before the big day. Shouldn't take too long."

"Thank you for telling us, I'd have worried," Daizi said as she ate her breakfast.

"Next Thursday I have an appointment. Not for my hair." A pale glint came into his eyes, "But it will affect little."

Xander raised an eyebrow. "Mysterious. Anyway, see you. Mini, be good. Remember your inside voice." He gave them a salute and headed out.

"Bye, Ba! Bye, Mama! Bye, Ivy!" Alec called cheerfully as he followed Xander. "See you after school!"

It didn't take them long to reach the school, arriving a few minutes early so they could drop off homework to the teachers who's class they did not have that day. It was awkward missing a day, going back, and then missing another day, but it couldn't be helped. Both were tired, but in better spirits.

The glimmer in Dark's eyes only increased at being called mysterious and they all said goodbye to the twins before getting ready for a big day of cooking, cleaning, and decorating.

At school, Sloan went up to the twins first, "Hey, glad to have you back today. I was thinking about you both yesterday, but didn't want to intrude."

"Hey, Sloan. Thanks," Xander said, turning to face her. "Appreciate it."

Alec smiled warmly, a bit of sadness crossing his face briefly. "It was a hard day, but I think a good day. I'd say we're doing a lot better today." He glanced at Xander who nodded confirmation. "Yes. Better."

"I can..." Sloan began to say but then furrowed her eyebrows, "No, I can't imagine. It really sucks, dude. I hope at least tomorrow is a good day. Hey, look," She went into her backback and pulled out a tupperware container, "I baked blueberry muffins. You don't have to take them, I don't want to make you feel weird or anything, but, I thought. If I give you muffins today, it's up to you to decide if it's because of yesterday, because of tomorrow, or just a friend thing."

"Oh, sweet, muffins," Xander said, already reaching out for them.

"Can it be for all of the above?" Alec asked, watching Xander. He hoped Xander remembered those were to share. "Tomorrow is going to be a great day."

"Yeah. You're coming, right?" Xander confirmed.

Xander shrugged. "Nice but not overdone?"

Alec nodded. "It's a party, so come dressed for a party, but you can dress however you like. We won't turn you away even if you wear dumpster diving clothes."

"Actually, Mama might because of the smells," Xander pointed out.

"Oh, right. Well, wear whatever you like, but be careful of strong smells," Alec confirmed.

Sloan chuckled, "Cool. That's easily managed, I don't go dumpster diving anyway. I just didn't know, because I know you all will be in court first, I didn't know if I needed to dress... court ready?" She shrugged, "I've never actually been to court before, I'm glad we don't all have to dress like lawyers for the party. Feels kinda dull."

"Nah, you're good to dress however," Xander assured her. "No way would I want anyone wearing a monkey suit to a party."

"I think some people can look very good in 'monkey suits,'" Alec replied. "But I suppose it wouldn't feel like a very good party if everyone dressed like a court date, no."

"Doesn't your dad kinda wear a monkey suit every day?" Sloan asked teasingly, "I feel like if I ever see Mr. Dark wearing a hoodie I should call 911. But I think the only time a courtroom party would seem like fun is if it's like, themed. Dressing like lawyers to watch Legally Blonde and that lawyer movie with the girl who knows about cars would be fun, but otherwise you're just looking stuffy without a purpose."

"A themed monkey suit party would be terrific! I have to remember that for our next birthday," Alec grinned.

Xander sighed and took Alec's arm. "We gotta get a move-on before you give him any more ideas," he told Sloan. "Thanks for these." He held up muffins slightly. "We appreciate it."

"It was no problem," Sloan replied, "I hope you enjoy them. Anyway, it doesn't need to be a birthday to throw a party," She gave them an impish wink and then hurried away before Xander could retaliate against her reminding Alec parties can be whenever.

"Oooo! She has a good point!" Alec grinned.

"Nope, nope, nope," Xander said, firmly taking Alec by the arm and leading him off. "We are not discussing parties right now! We are discussing math class."

"Aw. Party pooper," Alec grumbled.

Sloan laughed as she scurried away, absolutely delighted to be messing with them again.

Milo was waiting for them in their first class and gave them a small wave when they came in. As anxious as he always was, he was genuinely pleased to see them. "Hi," he said, as they sat down, unaware of his dorky little smile.

"'Sup, Milo," Xander greeted him. He noted Milo's smile with some amusement and returned a small one. "How's it going?"

"Did we miss anything important while we were gone?" Alec asked.
