How Green Becomes Wood

As the announcer triumphantly declared Ivy had taken first place, Ivy only squirmed in her brother's arms, reaching out for Daizi, and as soon as she was passed over, she held tightly, face crumpling like she was just about to cry.

"Congratulations, habibti!" Daizi said softly to her, one hand on the back of Ivy's head. Kissing her on the forehead, she beamed at her baby, "You won! How special!"

Dark placed his hand on the small of Daizi's back, "Come on, I think there is a prize for our champion to collect."

"Mmm!" Ivy gurgled, holding Daizi's hair in a vice grip, "Ma...ma...!"

"That's right, Ivy!" Alec gasped. "Did you hear? I swear that was a Mama!"

"I'm not convinced," Xander drawled. "She did do a brilliant job, though. Good job, Ivy! Let's go see what you won."

"You did it, Ivy," Daizi murmured, her breath trembling as she pulled Ivy in close. With one hand she pulled off her sunglasses and handed them limply to her husband so she could press her face against her daughter's. "Mama is s-so proud of you."

Dark wrapped his arm around his wife and daughter, leading them towards the MC who had to hand out the prizes. He wanted to say he didn't know what else it sounded like, if not Mama, but the look on his wife's face said so much it was hard for him to say much of anything. He stole a quick look at his sons, trusting one of them would take the stroller, and once at the correct place, Ivy was given a blue, 1st-place ribbon and a teething ring with a little pumpkin and a little ghost on it. Ivy wasn't particularly interested in either, though, she just held tightly to her Mama.

Xander took the stroller and trundled after them, smirking. Ivy had won, and she may or may not have said Mama! He was pretty proud of her.

Alec stayed close to Dark and Daizi. "She did an amazingly good job! And she won herself a nice prize. It's awesome."

"Do you like your new toy, Hummingbird?" Daizi asked, holding the teething toy up to Ivy and glowing from somewhere deep down inside.

"She looks tired," Dark commented, rubbing his thumb down the back of Ivy's head.

"I bet she is, she worked hard proving she's the fastest baby here," Daizi replied, keeping Ivy as close to herself as possible. She knew what she heard, even if Xander doubted it, and she really, really wanted her to say it again, but didn't know how to entice her to do it.

As he lifted the ribbon and briefly read the text on it, he turned to the twins, holding it out, "And now we have proof she is better than other babies. So that is something, even if her brothers decided she is a greyhound."

"Hey, you're the one who said she might be feeling left out and should be involved more," Xander pointed out with a smirk. "We found a way to make her feel more involved."

"It's not like she could really play any of the other games yet," Alec giggled.

"And that," Xander said, indicating the ribbon, "is a cool thing to keep, especially for when she gets older."

"I would not be surprised if there were people placing bets on the race," Dark replied dryly, "but at least she won. I do like the ribbon. I will have to find a good place to store it."

Daizi took Ivy's little hand in hers and kissed it, "Mama loves her baby so much. Mama loves Baby Ivy-Qadira. Yes, she does habibti. Mama loves you." She nuzzled her forehead against her daughter's, lost in a world of just the two of them, "and not just because you won."

"Mmm..." Ivy cooed, feeling safe and sleepy. She yawned, stretched, and snuggled in, her eyes slow both to close and open as she blinked.

"Can you two manage not to be too cute at least until we get to the car?" Xander asked, amused. "We're getting a lot of stares from a lot of women. All of them jealous."

"Highly jealous," Alec agreed. "They are going completely gaga, and some of the guys are looking nervous. Others are looking rather hopeful that their gaga partners mean something good for them."

"Let them stare," Daizi replied, not raising her head, "She said my name. She..." When her chin dimpled, Dark lightly touched her back and Daizi inhaled sharply.

"It is much to ask, to wait until we are at the car," He said, quietly sarcastic, "We still need to visit the gift shop."

"Hmm, I forgot about that," Xander admitted. "Alright, fine, be sweet. Just know who's to blame if a bunch of women start weeping at the sight of you two."

"You two are extraordinarily precious," Alec agreed.

"She said my name," Daizi repeated. Clearly, she had no plans to set Ivy down after that, but by the time they arrived to the gift shop, Ivy was fast asleep, one hand entangled in Daizi's hair, and Daizi had almost completely returned to earth.

The giftshop was an old, two-story barn, creaking over the farm grounds. The downstream was primarily home-goods, all surfaces decorated in Halloween and broadly Autumnal decor. Nestled into one corner was baby and children goods. Clothing, toys, books, all of the usual suspects. Closer to the checkout counter were various candies, chocolates, and other foodstuffs, like hot chocolate mixes or roasted pumpkin seeds.

Upstairs, however, was full of Halloween costume pieces and props, but not of the cheap, Spirit Halloween variety, at least, not primarily (some, especially those for children, tended that way), but most were high-quality and expensive. Inexplicably, amongst them, was a decently sized cage with a slow loris inside, and a sign providing information about it, and where it was on-loan from. Getting upstairs, however, would be no small feat, considering Dark had just walked into a store full of high-quality Halloween decor.

Xander reluctantly kept the stroller in hand, dragging it around as he looked around the store. There wasn't much that actually appealed to him, but it felt like looking around was the thing to do. Eventually, he and Alec trundled the stroller upstairs and stared at the slow loris for quite some time, puzzled but pleased to see it. It was weird but cool.

Then Alec was off staring around in glee as he tried to find the best thing to get from the store.

Dark quickly set off, knowing there was much to examine. With one hand, he guided Daizi, like he always did through the crowded store full of breakable items, but soon she encountered a problem. With Ivy in one arm and her cane in the other, actually being able to pick up anything was impossible, and since so much was breakable, the likelihood of accidentally knocking something over and shattering it seemed too high to risk. And she had no interest in setting Ivy down. Of course, Dark offered her every solution he could think of, but Daizi requested to be led to the little bench underneath the stairs so she could wait there.

A year ago, almost exactly a year ago, they had come here, and they had to end their trip early, because she physically could not do it. Her entire body ached, she was exhausted, and the act of walking around a large farm all day was too much for her. And she was scared, because at the time, she believed she had six more weeks of it, and she had no idea how she was going to survive it because she was only going to get bigger, somehow, even though she felt like her skin was liable to tear open more than it already had. Last year, Daizi had sat at the Pumpkin Patch with her hands on her swollen belly feeling little else but pain, exhaustion, fear, and guilt--for "ruining" the trip for everyone else. Now she knew, as she sat on the same bench with her baby sleeping soundly in her arms her body had already been giving out then, only three days later she went into labour. Of course she felt like that, but now it was different.

Now she was sitting out not because she had to, but because she wanted to. She could have put Ivy back in her stroller, or handed her to Dark or to Alec, so she could navigate the store, examine what they were selling, just like everyone else, but she wanted to cradle her baby. Because she had said her name for the very first time, and she was certain she'd never set her down again until Ivy repeated it. For nearly a decade and a half, she had been waiting for someone so little to call her that word. Now that it had happened, because she was certain it had, she'd wait until the little girl who had won a race to get to her would say it again. As much as she might want to, it was hard to deny she had been feeling fried and about ready to break down, but that little word, as those little hands held to tightly to her, had made a lot worthwhile.

As Dark went around the store, he kept taking quick glances back at the pair of them, ready to swoop in if for even a moment Daizi looked worn out or lonely, but anyone could see how at peace she was. So, as a little idea wormed his way into his mind, and he went back to exploring every square inch of the downstairs. When he found something he liked, or thought Daizi would like, he walked it over to her, which she appreciated, but they both knew it wasn't necessary.

The twins left Daizi alone. They did not and could not fully understand what she was going through, and they knew Dark would take care of her if she needed anything. They were happy for her that Ivy had said her name (Xander still wasn't positive she hadn't just put two "Mmm" sounds together), but they didn't understand why Daizi looked simultaneously like she was about to have a breakdown and completely at peace. She was being so strange lately. So, rather than risk doing or saying anything that might upset her, they left her to Dark's care and wandered. Xander was only too happy to leave the stroller near Daizi and stop messing around with it. Strollers, he decided, were ridiculous contraptions.

Alec was happy to explore every inch of the place, on the hunt for what he wanted to buy and take home. There were so many cool things! things everywhere! Weird things, cool things, dark things, bright things, cheap things, expensive things. He started picking up the things he really liked and carrying them with him as he tried to decide.

Xander was soon bored. The stuff was cool, sure, but he had no actual desire to buy a single thing. He wandered and browsed because that's what you did, but he didn't actually care. He was just waiting until everyone else was ready while trying not to spoil their fun.

Daizi stayed seated on the bench, rocking and humming to Ivy, heedless of any of the strangers in the store. She was just tucked away in some quiet back corner, she wasn't bothering anyone. Just holding her sleeping baby.

Eventually, Dark went upstairs, to look at the costume pieces, and seeing Alec wandering around with his hands full, he sauntered over, "What have you got there?"

Alec grinned as he tried to sift through the things in his hands. He ended up having to put things down in random open spots in order to show Dark. Most were reasonably well-made, but a couple of the items were cheap. "This really cool black cape, this nice statue of a black cat, here's a statue of a white cat and a black cat intertwined, a jack-o-lantern-shaped candle holder (this one is really cool), a candlestick with a pumpkin vine, a rainbow skull, a cauldron that works as a humidifier (I think, or it's just fog), plush bats, and a couple of hanging bats!"

"I see..." Dark replied, picking up some of the items and turning them over in his hands, pinching the cloak fabric between his fingers and letting the weight drop, "What about them do you like? They do not particularly seem like your style."

"Everybody loves a cloak," Alec defended. "Cloaks are awesome! And I like candles. Candles are really cool, and these candle holders are creative, especially this jack-o-lantern one. The cauldron is cleaver, and cats are awesome, and bats are so amazing!"
