How Green Becomes Wood

"To protect his back, I think? But I'm really not complaining," Daizi sighed, "And in his defense, he didn't have parents or grandparents to tut at him. He rolls his sleeves up to his elbows, leaves a good four buttons undone...hmmmm... but his undershirts are nice, too."

"Because I can't touch him!" Daizi cried out and then groaned, rubbing her hands over her face and unwittingly smearing the makeup she had on, "He gets to walk around in his tight little tops with his forearms! And I can't do a damn thing!"

"I... beg your pardon?" Sally asked, suddenly very confused. "Please, darling, excuse me for prying, but what on earth are you talking about? Why can you not do anything with him?"

"We made a bet! We made a stupid, stupid bet," She groaned, dropping her head on the vanity table, "Cooger said we wouldn't be able to go no contact until our anniversary, and we were so stupid we agreed. If we go on a date we're allowed two kisses, and while my father is here we're allowed to hold hands for emotional support, but besides that? We can't even cuddle! It's a nightmare!"

Sally couldn't help it. She laughed out loud and tied up her hair in a cap for sleeping. She didn't do it often, but she'd just gotten it done for Ivy's party and wanted to make it last. "Oh dear, darling. It sounds as though you caught yourself in quite the pickle," she cackled. "I have to ask, are you certain it is worth going through with this bet? Is winning it worth the frustration?"

"That's the thing," Daizi groaned, "I don't care if we win, I just can't be the one to make us lose. It's my job to break him, but he hates to lose! And my father's here, so I can't even really try!" She raised her head, "As far as I know, he's not staying for the vow renewal because he can't stomach it, so as soon as he leaves I'm not resting until he is crawling to me. As it is, I know he's dreaming of me. If my father wasn't here, I'd break him in a week."

Sally blushed slightly at the thought and shook her head. "Well, I suppose you can look at it as saving up your energy for a truly grand vow renewal. After the service is concluded and you are home again, of course. Alone together. Or at a lovely hotel just the two of you without the children. Then you can do all the crawling and breaking you want." She picked up her phone and carried it to her bed.

"We're definitely getting a hotel," Daizi said, tipping her chair back, "but it's such a nightmare. He gets to still look at me. And his arms, Sally! His beautiful arms. If you trust me on anything, trust me when I say when you're like me, there's nothing more gorgeous than arms and hands. Even when it's just a totally PG hug. Shut your eyes, some time, believe me." She sighed heavily, running her hands through her hair, and then just began to braid it, not knowing what Dark braiding it for her would cause after this conversation, "I'm never the one to ruin a game, but I didn't expect him to be working so hard against me."

"Working so hard against you by... purely existing?" Sally asked in amusement. She tossed the two larger decorative pillows off the bed and then used the other two regular pillows to prop herself up. "I'm sure it is utter torture, darling, truly a torment. Although, I think in this exact instance, you may be the better off one."

"No, you don't understand," Daizi exclaimed, getting up to pace around her bedroom, "He came to me, yesterday, I was just waking up, and he sat on the side of the bed, and he told me how he had tempting, sinful dreams about me, and he leaned in like he was about to kiss me, and he still had his gravelly morning voice, if you can imagine his voice even deeper than it normally is, and he already smelled like cologne, and then at the last. minute. he stopped. and walked! away!" She paused and rested against her bedpost, touching the engravings Dark added to each anniversary, "I swear to every god I commune with, as soon as my family is out of my house and the twins are back in school, I'm going to ruin his life."

"Daizi, Darling, if you could see your man, you would understand," Sally said dryly. "Especially when he surprises you by being in the early stages of stripping. I am very sorry for that, but it is true."

"I can't say I blame you," Daizi laughed, "I always feel... and I probably shouldn't, but it sort of makes me feel powerful when people have the most horrible thoughts about him. Because even though people like you and him feel otherwise about me, so many people think he's so far out of my league... and they're swooning over him, because he walks around like that, but he's always walking right to me." She sighed again, shaking her head, "And people wonder why I'm so physically affectionate with him."

"I have only met perhaps three women who would be, as you say, in his league," Sally told her. "Virtually no one is in his league, which means perhaps in some twisted way you are in his league. I certainly am not."

"I don't really care much for 'leagues', to be honest, but I develop attraction for people before knowing what they looked like, and when I first fell in love with him he was skinny, just the lankiest boy you could imagine. Sally---" She allowed herself to drop into bed, feeling like a much younger woman describing a date, "Imagine how it must have been for me when there I am, in person with him, for the first time in almost five years, and the last time I saw him he was skinny, and I touch him, and now he's like that."
