How Green Becomes Wood

Daizi shrugged, guessing if she talked to Alec instead of Dark, it may go over more smoothly. She didn't know what was going on between them, but hopefully it wasn't also goint on between her and Alec. She couldn't cope if him pulling away from the family was seasonal. "I'm glad to know the two of you talk so often."

"He sends me texts. I do not usually know how to reply, and sometimes when I am busy, I do not reply. He does not seem to mind." Ciara was vaguely puzzled by that but did not fully mind.

"It sounds as though he has a little difficulty settling for the here and now," Ciara remarked. "I encourage dreams, but unchecked, they lead to dissatisfaction and... other potential trouble. Still, i suppose not much harm can come from wanting a cat." She glanced at Daizi. "As long as he accepts your answer of yes or no?"

"I think that's very true. In a way it's admirable, but I also think it's important to learn to appreciate what you have instead of always waiting on the next big thing. I've said before--I think he lived so much of his life unable to fathom having opportunities that now he just wants to try it all." She sighed, turning her face to the side for a moment before saying, "The answer is a firm no, at the moment. He's not satisfied with it, but he'll have to learn to be. Dark is really unwilling to add another life to the home--it's like what I was saying earlier, it'd be another thing to make space for, and I don't just mean physical space."

Ciara gave a very quiet click of her tongue in disapproval. "I hope he accepts your authority in this matter. If he was like his mother, he would bring home a kitten and try to hide it. Only, she did not do it with a kitten. It was a squirrel."

"I do not even know. She said it was injured, but it certainly did not act injured when it was tearing its way through my closet!" Ciara said with an indignant sniff. "Then it decided to take a high-speed tour of our house. When asked about it, she said that our parents only said that she could not have a pet, not that she could not nurture an injured animal, and squirrels were not pets."

"Oh, that's brilliant" Daizi continued to laugh, absolutely delighted, "It's absolutely brilliant. She made a logical point, she found a loophole. One I hope my children never learn to exploit, although I think what Dark said was, 'no new life which goes on four or two legs, which is covered in fur, feathers, scales, or hair, shall be invited to live in this home.' so I think that only leaves insects and arachnids."

"Hmm, be careful of you may find an insect farm before you know what to do," Ciara remarked dryly. "Especially if they work together. Would Xander aid his brother in sneaking in one of those giant insects or a colony of ants?"

"He might," Daizi sighed in amusement, "But as long as they stay contained to an ant farm or terrarium, it'd be somewhat more manageable than other animals. I feed Neith once a week, I only have to deep clean the enclosure every six months or so, but it can go longer without issue. If you want a low maintence pet..." She grinned, knowing that would be the very last animal Ciara would consider taking in.

Ciara sat perfectly still for a moment. She had been in the same space as a giant spider. She had been in the same house as a giant spider. She had been close to a giant spider and hadn't realized it. A giant spider.

"Thank you," she said, unclenching her jaw to respond graciously. "I think I am better without a... pet... of any kind. I prefer my solitude."

"Yes, this was enjoyable," Ciara said truthfully. "It would be nice to do it again." She stood and paid the bill before helping Daizi find her way back to the front door and then the car. Once she was certain Daizi was settled, she got in and started the car.

Daizi left the tip on the table as they walked out, immediately trying to set up when they'd go out next so it was actually scheduled and they didn't just talk about doing it again.

Once it was settled, she sat back and buckled her seat belt, glad to have had this time away from her problems.

Ciara made casual conversation with Daizi as she drove, mostly focused on driving but keeping up a certain amount of connection with her blind companion. When they reached Daizi's home, Ciara pulled up directly in front of the walkway and asked Daizi if she wanted to be walked to the door. She meant no offense, of course, but she was still not fully confident in what Daizi could or could not do or felt comfortable doing.
