How Green Becomes Wood

"Xander, have I ever once seemed like a person who has a life?" Milo asked blandly although it was clear from the look on his face he was teasing, "I work in the dark room, I play video games, and I watch twitch streams. Sometimes I'll read a graphic novel or a book from the library and I'll text you, sometimes Alec, and Noor."

"Guess your mum is more likely to see it than Noor is, but that's cool," Xander chuckled.

"How is your mum doing?" Alec asked, coming up alongside Xander. "Staying strong and finding happy things?"

"She's doing really well," Milo said with real delight in his face, "She actually, um, told me that she can't come for Thanksgiving, because she can't get the time off, but she's going to visit for Christmas. She already has the flights booked and everything. So I'm actually hoping it won't snow, even though she loves snow, because I don't want there to be any problems with her flight. She said she's trying to convince my grandparents to let me stay in the hotel with her while she's here."

"Sounds cozy," Xander remarked.

"That's great!" Alec cheered, clapping a hand on Milo's shoulder briefly. "I'm so happy to hear that! I'm sorry about Thanksgiving, but Thanksgiving seems to be getting crowded out by Christmas, and no one is taking it seriously anymore." He made a face. "Anyway, Christmas if going to be here in the blink of an eye! You two are going to have so much fun together!"

"We said we'll probably be able to have Thanksgiving foods at Christmas and do both together. Christmas is better than Thanksgiving, anyway," Milo said happily, "She was able to afford the flight all through her tips so she's been doing really well as a waitress."

"She's got some. She goes to meetings for people with her troubles, so she spends time with people from there. And she joined a crochet club, she's thinking she might start selling crocheted stuff at artist markets and stuff," Milo told them.

"Yeah it's like knitting but it's with hooks instead of straight needles. It's the other thing she took up after her injury since she couldn't run anymore, which is what she used to love. She can make stuffed toys, but also hats and stuff. She has a strawberry hat she loves."

"That is really cool," Alec smiled. "I'm glad for her and you. Her happy obviously makes you happy, and that makes me happy."

"Most importantly," Xander said, "you're both safe. So, do your Grands have any Thanksgiving plans?"

"They're taking me to see my aunt and my cousins who I haven't seen in years," Milo said, "It's my father's sister. I remember seeing them a lot when I was a kid and after my dad died, before my mom's injury."

"Oh, that's so cool!" Alec exclaimed at the same time as Xander said, "Wow, that's awkward."

Alec pressed on. "It might be awkward, but it's good to at least have some kind of knowledge about your extended family."

Xander shrugged. "Yeah, probably. One visit can only hurt for so long."

"It will be awkward, but my aunt was always really nice. I don't remember my cousins as much. My aunt was a good baker, I think." Milo told them, "and I haven't, you know, had a normal holiday in a really long time. So it's kinda cool."

"Don't forget to send pictures," Xander said seriously, as if Milo could possibly forget. "Especially of the food."

"I think we're going to Uncle Cooger's for Thanksgiving," Alec mused. He paused, a thoughtful frown furrowing his brow. "I wonder what Uncle Tristan's plans are? I've never asked. He's not in contact with his family last I knew. I hope he isn't going to be home and alone."

"This might be the one time you would forget," Xander said, pretending to be seriously concerned.

Alec elbowed him, making his snort in laughter. "That's a good thought! I hope that's true. I should ask next time I see him."

"We should probably get going," Xander said. "Milo, text me availibility, and we'll figure out what we're doing."
