How Green Becomes Wood

"I do not think she is old enough to understand," Dark replied, getting up and pretending to root around the room to 'find' his daughter, "I could try to explain in words why I can see her, but that does not mean it will make sense to her. As soon as I find her, I think you will understand what I mean."

Dark rooted around while Ivy giggled her head off before finally he lifted up the blanket, "There she is! I found Ivy!"

Ivy stood and giggled, just barely peaking out from underneath the blanket for a few moments, but then wiggled the blanket off of her and held it in her hands, "Baba!"

"Is it my turn?" Dark asked and taking the blanket. Then Ivy crawled away and Dark got up, walked to a different part of the room, and put the blanket over his head. Then when Ivy looked again, she started trying to find him---as if her 6'8 father wasn't right there and just covered in a blanket.

Xander genuinely couldn't tell if Ivy really couldn't see her father, or if she was pretending not to see him. It could be either one as far as he was concerned, but it was absolutely hilarious to see Dark under a blanket like a small-budget horror movie for kids. He cracked up watching him and Ivy.

Dark stayed perfectly silent, but the slightest quiver of his shoulder's suggested he, too, found this amusing--especially the sound of Xander's laughter during it. Ivy crawled over to her brother as she looked around and just said, "Baba?"

Xander snickered and stood, following Ivy. "Where could Baba be? Hmm. Is he here?" He leaned over and lifted the couch cushion. "No, he's not here. How about there?" He pointed just to the left of where Dark stood.

Ivy crawled over that way happily, looking around until she finally pulled the blanket and revealed her father. She shrieked loudly in delight.

"You found me!" Dark replied, scooped her up and lifting her above his head, "Such a clever girl named Ivy-Qadira! And did your big brother Xander help?"

"Only a little," Xander assured him. "She asked so nicely. Didn't you, Mini?"

Alec came galloping down the stairs. "Finished! All done! Kapoot! Now can I play, Dads?"

"Yep," Xander drawled.

"You and mister 'do your homework' over there," Alec grumbled, nodding to Xander. "I think it's okay. I'll read it over in the morning before school, but I think it's fine." He held his hands out to Ivy. "Ivy! Come say hi! You've been with Ba alllll day! Don't you want to hang with someone else?"

"Ack!" Ivy said happily, hurrying over to Alec, holding her arms up before even reaching him.

"Your assignment is already late, I think you should probably make sure it is to the best of your ability," Dark said with a frown, "Why was it late in the first place?"

"I got distracted, and it got lost in the shuffle," Alec said with a shrug. He scooped up Ivy and tossed her high. "This is so much more fun than essays!" He brought her down to blow on her belly. "Besides, I'm still getting solidly good grades."

"Don't worry, Ba. It's alright!" Alec assured him. "I'm hardly ever late." He spun in place, swinging Ivy around.

"No, just usually exactly on time," Xander said dryly.

Alec paused his spinning to dip Ivy. "Don't be such a dad," he teased. "I'm still getting good grades, staying out of trouble, and moderately participating in class. What more can you ask for?"

Alec got a good grip on Ivy and held her out in front of him looking at her seriously as her feet dangled. "What do you think, Ivy? Do I have you occupied? Shall we hunt for toys while Baba makes dinner?"

Alec looked at Xander. "Your turn!"

Xander shrugged and quickly hid a few items before sitting on the floor and pulling the blanket over himself. "Okay. Go," he said when he was ready.

"Ivy, where's Xander?" Alec coached, setting her down. "Can you find Xander?"
