How Green Becomes Wood

Dark dressed in black. Mostly. His vest had subtle gold piping. He went up to the twins with his sleeves still open and without his tie on or his handkerchief added, "Daizi said I should ask you both if I should use red or green today. Daizi is wearing green."

"I think you look good as is," Xander replied.

Alec shook his head. "Red. You should absolutely wear red. Dramatic red! Of course, I don't think you have anything that's not dramatic, so that should be easy."

Xander shrugged. "If it's a choice, yeah. Red over green."

"I expected I should at least make an attempt at festivity." Dark said casually, "And your mother looks exquisite so I need a tie. She is too elegant for me to be casual besides her. I will go with red." He paused for a few moments looking at the two of them and then nodded, "You both look nice."

Dark shook his head and said, walking back to his bedroom, "I do not even want to think about what Cooger will wear."

After he selected his accessories, there was a bit of time to relax and catch their breaths before Ivy woke up and the guests began to arrive. Dinner was ready to be put in the oven after everyone arrived. It was good, they were prepared. Maybe a bit antsy, though, so Daizi got up and put on quiet instrumental music. Not long after, Ivy woke up, so Dark went upstairs to change her and brought her downstairs in a little red velvet dress with a lace collar and white buttons down the front. He had, with great effort because she was so squirmy, put a matching red bow in her hair. Immensely pleased, he kissed her cheek and brought her downstairs, "Look how cute your sister is."

Alec clapped his hands. "Ivy! You are so cute!"

"Five bucks says she loses the bow before the first guest," Xander smirked.

Alec ignored him. "Ba, you look very nice, and if Mama is wearing gold, too, then you all match! Me, too! Xander, you should go swap your silver for gold."

"Nope. I'm the silver bells of Christmas," Xander said without missing a beat.

"I fully expect she will manage to destroy it, but it was worth the risk," Dark agreed, "I always find silver to be a more gothic metal but I think I look better in gold. I do still wear both, our wedding rings are silver, but gold it better for my skin tone."

"Silver bells of Christmas?" Daizi asked, confused.

"Gold does look really good on you, but silver is also quite striking on you," Alec nodded.

"Silver bells get used as decorations a lot for Christmas time, and there's an old song that says something about silver bells, but I don't remember most of it," Xander explained.

"No, the ramp is already set up for Tristan," Dark said, pushing his hair back with one hand and running through the list of necessary tasks in his head, "I think everything is ready."

Ivy, meanwhile, while crawling around almost immediately grabbed and mostly tugged out the bow her father had so delicately and lovingly tied into her hair.

"It's impressive how good you are at throwing them given how much you dislike them," Daizi praised, rubbing his arm.

Dark looked over at her, "I like the planning."

"I know you do, Goose."

"I forgot to mention, also," He said, rubbing the back of his neck and glancing at the twins, "I agreed to do it. The interview."

That caught their full attention even though Xander had been watching Ivy playing with her bow.

"You did? Good for you," Alec said quietly.

Xander gave a nod. "Good."

"If you need anything, please tell us," Alec requested.

"I meant to tell you earlier." Dark said, spinning his wedding ring around his finger, "Sooner than I had hoped it would be. I guess they are only a state away right now but after the new year are going further west so it was the most convenient time."

He nodded, although he was not so sure, "Perhaps. But I suppose we will learn." He took a breath and seemed like he was about to say something more when he spotted his daughter and sighed heavily, "Ivy-Qadira, what havoc have you wrought?"

Dark stood and scooped Ivy with one arm and she babbled around her mouthful of bow. "I cannot believe you wished this upon me."

"And on Christmas!" Daizi exclaimed, ardently shaking her head and joking completely.

"Come on, Hummingbird, Baba has to redo Ivy's pretty hair," Dark said, teasing the bow away from her and bringing her back upstairs.

"Yeah, but it's also a toddler with a bow. It's inevitable," Xander shrugged with a smirk. "I'll bet she'll be so distracted once people show up that she'll forget all about it."

"Speaking of people showing up," Alec said from the window, "I think I see Toby and Lex at their front door, so they should be coming any minute now."
