How Green Becomes Wood

"Every day," Dark replied, stretching as he settled in to the post-bedtime evening, which was really when he and Daizi could properly relax, "but it has only been six days of owning it. I suppose she should be allowed to play with it for at least a little while."

Xander sat on the couch and plunked the dog on the table next to him. "I keep confusing this thing as a bear. It's a dog."

"It is very obviously a dog," Alec nodded.

Xander rolled his eyes. "Not that it looks like the real deal of either. Anyway, what are we playing next?"

Xander picked Monopoly, much to Alec's dismay. They played for a while, focused on the game, Alec trying to make things more interesting for himself by making up little voices for the various pieces. He really didn't like Monopoly, but it was Xander's turn to pick the game. He did his best to stay engaged.

Xander was fully focused on the game when all of a sudden the little fluffy dog wiggled and started chirping out a question. One ear brushed Xander's shoulder.

"Bloody f***!!" Xander launched himself from his chair, upsetting the board and nearly falling over.

Daizi, frankly, refused to play Monopoly with them. It turned out, this was for a very, very good reason. Dark was ruthless. It seemed to bring him pleasure to set up traps for his children to fall into.

Then when the dog caused Xander to jump, Daizi cackled (after recovering from her momentary surprise) and Dark simply looked over to him dryly and said, "Such foul language."

"Imma burn that thing," Xander half gasped, half growled.

Alec giggled, shaken by Xander's sudden reaction but now amused. "Don't blame the poor dog! It's just doing its thing."

"Its thing is to talk out of nowhere?" Xander demanded.

Xander glared at the dog. Then he picked it up carefully by one ear and carried it over to the closest cupboard. He stuck it in, stuffed a blanket on top, and shut the thing inside. "Maybe tomorrow I'll start the new year off right by staking it."

"You're so cruel," Alec laughed. "What are you going to tell Ivy or Aunt Ciara?"

"That the dog went rabid and had to be put down," Xander stated.

"You mean this song?" Alec crouched down and started crab walking back and forth as he sang the robotic song.

Xander started picking up the scattered pieces of the game. "Oh, great. Now I have a toy for a brother."

Dark stared at him, "You look like you would very much like to be dropped out into the snow."

Daizi just laughed, "Hey, that crab is what inspired Ivy to knowingly take unassisted steps, I can't insult it!"

Alec grinned and pretended to snap his claws at Dark and then crab walked away, still singing the song cheerily.

Xander moved out of the way, watching Alec go. "You know, I thought for sure he'd turn into a Ken Doll, not a crab. With all those clothes and accessories, he was halfway there already."

"There's an old joke that given enough time, everything evolves into a crab," Daizi grinned, "Alec just got there more quickly than most."

"I am going to send this to your Uncle," Dark said, taking out his phone, "He needs to see the consequences of his actions."

Alec laughed and almost broke character, but then he kept crabwalking, turning around to head Dark's direction, still singing the song and snapping his hands.

Xander sighed and shook his head. "This is going to be weird to explain at school."

"No!" Alec cried out. Then he reached out and gently tackled Dark. "Ha! Distraction!"

"Your son just attacked your husband," Xander reported to Daizi.

After allowing himself to be tackled, Dark pressed his lips together and then prompt stood, lifting Alec off the ground, "Because of that, you have been sentenced to Air Jail."

"It sounds as though my husband has just imprisoned your brother." Daizi replied.

"Oh no!" Alec laughed. He wriggled around and started trying to crawl over and around Dark like a cat on a tree. "The view up here is swell!"

Xander snorted. "I've lost the thread of what's happening, but I think that's what Alec wanted."

Dark stiffening his grip to prevent Alec's squirming, holding him on his back as though he were an infant, "You do not understand, you have been imprisoned."

"He really has an odd way of being silly," Daizi murmured.

"Alright," Alec agreed and went fully limp. "Then what are you going to do now?"

"I blame too long out of school and a proper schedule and staying up too late," Xander told her.
