How Green Becomes Wood

Xander considered this and then nodded. "I think what I said applies to him, too, but I agree with you."

Alec waited until they got close to the door. Then he dug his fingers into Dark's shirt and tried to wrap himself around his father as best as he could. "That's cold!"

Alec laughed. "I got a permit as soon as Uncle Cooger brought it in!" he proclaimed. He started squirming again, trying to get out of Dark's grip, but instead of going down, he wanted to climb up on Dark's shoulders. It had been a while since they'd last done something like this, and while Alec's musculature could not compare to Dark's, he was a lot stronger than he'd ever been before and more flexible, making him a more difficult prisoner to keep hold of.

Dark began to walk away from the door, heading to the couch, still squeezing him in tightly. This was not the first time someone had fought him like this, "And what a farewell it is," He teased.

"Aw, you're such a spoil sport sometimes, Ba!" Alec whined, unable to keep from grinning as he said it, not meaning a word.

Xander moved well out of the way and stood near Daizi. "This is far more interesting than watching a ball drop."

"I know, I am a cruel man to warn you against suffering," He contorted how he held Alec, some voice in his mind reminding him how in only a few hours he would be forty and he wondered how long afterwards he would be able to behave like this.

"We should time it so Dark drops Alec at midnight," Daizi agreed.

Alec squirmed around and somehow managed to link his arms around Dark's neck. "Your beard tickles! How do you stand this thing?"

Xander checked the clock. "That's over two hours away. I saw the ball drop in the Times Square on TV once. It was really boring. When you hear drop, you think they actually, you know, drop the thing. Nah, they lowered it. Slowly. It was the most anticlimactic thing I've ever seen."

Dark bounced Alec up, basically just holding him like he held Ivy, "I condition it. And I have not seen beneath it in over a decade."

"It's already the New Year in Egypt," Daizi said, "Dark, Cooger, and I visited the party at Times Square once. Exactly once. It was overcrowded and awful but we still had a bit of fun."

Alec used the bounce to climb farther up on Dark's shoulder, trying to climb him like a monkey. "You should take a peek someday!"

"Sounds awful, but something to check off the bucket list," Xander said. "I've heard they drop a potato over in Idaho. I bet it's just a dumb myth, but I'd rather see a potato drop than a ball, even if it is lowered slowly and not really dropped. I wonder if they drop a giant corn in Ohio or something?"
