How Green Becomes Wood

Alec hung on, refusing to back down but no longer going up. "But what if you liked yourself better without a beard? You'd never know! You're a different person now than you were before the beard, after all."

"Imagine if someone did drop a ear of corn and it speared into the ground," Xander smirked.

"Oh, darn. There go my plans for the future!" Alec giggled, still hanging on, but only by a thread.

"Or maybe one giant goose or rat," Xander snickered. "That'd be hilarious.

"One that's been speared into the ground from a great height," Xander added.

Alec seized his opportunity and pulled free of Dark's grip. He pushed and pulled himself upward, using the arm of the couch to get some height, and draped himself across Dark's shoulders like a mink stole. Was it comfortable? Not even close, but it was hilarious! He caught just a small piece of Dark's beard and held on - just for balance, he didn't actually pull - and gestured with the other hand. "Everything the light touches is mine!"

"What are you doing?" Dark asked, slightly pulling away but not being able to move too far because either Alec would fall or he'd get hurt, or both, and anyway he was semi-restrained, "I do not even know how to get you down from there.

"I live up here now!" Alec said cheerfully, ignoring the burn in his ribs from Dark's shoulders. He didn't know how other dance styles pulled this off without serious bruises. Or maybe they didn't. "And I'm up on top of the world. I have conquered a mighty mountain! All is mine for the taking!" He patted the top of Dark's head with his free hand.

"You wouldn't want her any other way," Alec teased, tugging lightly on his father's beard. "She is the wind!"

"Wind and fire, I'd bet," Xander said, "but even if she was a rock, there's no way anyone would own her."

"Lesser men have tried, greater men wouldn't dare," Daizi grinned, "and I'm raising Ivy-Qadira to be the same."

Dark shifted beneath Alec's weight, "Are you trying to see what it's like for her all the time?"

"She couldn't possibly turn out any different," Xander assured her.

Alec snickered. "Maybe. Or maybe it's just fun!" And he was definitely going to have some bruising, but it was worth it. He did think perhaps it was time to figure out how to get down.

"I expected it to be fun, and I was right!" Alec said cheerfully. "But now I think the fun has run its course." He let go of Dark's beard and flipped backward off his shoulders. He twisted as he fell and got his feet under him just in the nick of time, landing with a solid thud. He held there for a moment, hunched over as he caught his balance, and then popped upright. "Nailed it!"
