How Green Becomes Wood

"I will eat," Dark said, "I did not wake up too long ago." He lifted Ivy and kissed her on the cheek.

"There's no rush, Goose," Daizi said, rubbing his back, "I'll make you coffee."

"Thank you, I would love that."

Xander finished off his tea. "Mama said you wanted a nice, quiet day up until this evening. So. My plan is to work in my shed for the next hour. After that, I thought maybe you and I could work in your shed for an hour. After that, I turn you over to Energizer Bunny over there."

"Nails!" Alec said happily. "I thought we could give each other pedicures. Mama, too, if she wants. Maybe some hair stuff? And that should leave enough time for you to do whatever you want until dinner. Ivy gets a turn, too, of course, and she won't be limited to an hour."

"That sounds nice," Dark told Xander, and then looked at Alec with a bit of amusement in his eyes, "Pedicures are lovely, but I am not sure I want to spend part of my birthday with my son touching my feet. Or touching his. But it is a nice idea otherwise."

"I'm very glad to have an itinerary," Dark said, thanking Daizi when she brought him his coffee before he took a sip of it. "I do like having my nails painted, but it is too hard to keep up with when chasing after this one. I have somewhat aged out of finding chipped nail polish hardcore."

Dark nodded, still a bit sleepy, "It is punk rock," with one hand he made the devil horns sign, "It makes you look like you work hard and don't care about being perfectly polished and maintained. It is grunge."

Alec considered that and shook his head. "I don't get it, but if it made you happy, I'm happy!"

Xander stood. "I'm heading out to my shed. I'll see you later."

"I should go, too," Alec said. "I'll be upstairs if you need me!" He waved goodbye to Ivy and headed out.

"I will see you in just a little while," Dark told them and settled back to eat his breakfast with his baby in his lap and his wife at his side. Even Enkidu was sitting by them. It was a lovely start to his morning.

Alec went upstairs to his room and looked around. He'd started a new project, which he knew wasn't great, but, in his mind, this project should help with his stuff and storage problem. He'd gotten rid of a lot of his stuff. A shocking amount of stuff. He had a small bin of loose stuff to put in his junk journal, which was a slow but steady project he was slowly learning he loved doing, but he also had a bunch of posters and pictures. The pictures he could put in a box, too, but the posters were awkward to store. Not to mention, it was hard to enjoy pictures and posters when they were in a box. So, he'd been working on putting them up on the walls. He didn't want them slap-dashed and a whole mess, he wanted it to look nice! So, using the smallest bits of painter's tape he could manage, he was putting up a few at a time and judging how they looked. It was kind of tedious, but only halfway through and he could tell he was going to love the end result! The rainbow was kept free, of course.

Xander went to his shed where he'd been trying to learn a new technique that should make his handbags stronger. It was trickier to do and took a lot of time, especially since he didn't really know what he was doing, but he stuck it out. He wanted to be proud of his work! He wanted to put out good, quality items that would last. Not cheap stuff that someone would think had been made in a shed in a negative sense. It was easy to lose an hour wrestling with bits of leather and metal and glue. The glue was starting to make him feel a bit lightheaded, even with the windows and door open, so it came as a relief when his phone chimed to remind him that it was time to head to Dark's shed. He put everything away neat and tidy and walked over to stand near the door of Dark's shed to wait for him.

Dark spent most of his free hour eating his breakfast before going to finish drying his hair because he felt he deserved to have his hair look nice on his birthday.

As he walked up to his shed, he nodded to Xander and asked, "How was your work?"

"It comes in waves," Dark assured him, unlocking his shed door, "I always end up asking myself why am I putting myself through this hell? immediately before working even more intensely at it, because I would rather struggle and hate everything than give up on how I know it is meant to be."

"I have not felt particularly creatively lately." Dark admitted, going to his desk where his beautiful mini table saw was currently set up, "Since Christmas all I have really done is cut pieces of scrap wood to test how this works."

Xander picked up one of the pieces of wood and looked at it. "Some of these bigger chunks, I bet you could make a cutting board with. Have you ever seen those butcher block cutting boards? It's mostly gluing and fitting pieces together. That's... that's as creative as I get with wood. Sorry."
